Increased Legal Protection For Women

in Colombia; a new law has been approved. "The Women's Bench" in the Congress, consisting of female lawmakers over party divisions had been working to improve the legal protection of women and the already existing penal codes have been tightened.

It is illegal in Colombia not just to hit women but also to insult them, force them to dress in a certain way, force them to marital sex, make sexual innnuendos or harass female co-workers at work places. To harass women sexually will be punished by no less than four years of prison; a homicide if the victim is a woman will be punishable with 40 years of prison.

There was a time in Colombia when a husband could kill his wife stabbing her 29 times (in a state of intense emotional disturbance) and get away with it...but those days are long gone, thank gods.

It is illegal in Colombia not just to hit women -- Good

but also to insult them -- Dumb

force them to dress in a certain way --Dumb, unless it falls under "workplace harassment"

force them to marital sex, -- Good

make sexual innnuendos or harass female co-workers at work places. -- Good

To harass women sexually will be punished by no less than four years of prison; -- Ridiculous/extreme if it's verbal harassment in the workplace for which the remedy is typically termination and a civil lawsuit.

a homicide if the victim is a woman will be punishable with 40 years of prison. -- Good as long as the sentencing guidelines are the same when a male is murdered.

Overall, I don't disagree with the intentions but given the fact that Colombia cannot bring to justice over 90% of its murderers, can't control narcos in its jails, can't distribute narco property, etc...where are they going to get the resources and willpower to enforce these new laws?

I am all for protecting women, but who decides when the above has been breached? That is a very slippery slope. If you break up with a woman and hurt her self image and make her feel bad about herself, are you now a criminal? How much time will men get in the clink for breaking up?

I agree with billyb; we are all for the protection of women, but that law blows! All the woman has to do is lie and the guy is screwed. I've met some pretty good actresses in my day.

What about my rights as a man or person now? What happens if we break up and the woman makes me feel bad about myself and hurts my self image? If she says "Petey you're fat, old, bald, you have a little weiner and you're bad in bed", can I have her thrown in the Greybar Hotel, too?

Kat, that was exactly the first thing that came in my mind when I was reading the article.

It will take a lot of courageous women to denounce the sexist employment policies of a great many Colombian work places. Attach a photo to a work application form should be illegal too.

A vibrator is insulting, but I've heard worse. A woman I know here was b**ch slapped by her boss at work in front of everybody.

She worked for a travel agency at the airport here in Cartagena. His justification was that she was not working fast enough, so he slapped the daylights out of her. She left and never went back. She asked me not to tell her fiance a Gringo friend of mine why she quit her job, because she didn't know what his reaction would be. This happened just a year or so ago.

There are definetely limits and boundaries that should be followed. After Navy tailhook in the early 90s we received strong regular doses of anti-sexual harassment training.

Wow ' interesting themes in today´s posts

"It's a crime to hurt a woman's self-image or make her feel bad about herself"

Sounds like it is open to interpretation and of course subjective (I take it this is interpreted from Spanish?), I am sure the judicial system will have a time of it defining what this actually means.....this probably refers more to the "not so obvious" oppressive type stuff that happens on a daily basis which over a long period of time can result in whittling down a persons own view of themselves.
Remember the sexual harrassment Hoopla that came out in the EEUU in the 90's? Law suits all over the place...

Good post Desi ;)

To my knowledge she just told a few friends, including myself. It was colaborated by a co-worker of hers. The co-worker said that after she left the office you could hear a pin drop, the boss went into his office and didn't come out the rest of the day and he didn't come into work the rest of the week (everyone assumed he was too afraid). As far as I no there were no consequenses for the boss. She's married to my friend and living in Texas since last June.

Sloopie it's ok for a woman to feel bad about herself...if it's self-inflicted. Which it seldom is. Low self-esteem is usually caused by other people, like bad parents. Now...I don't believe this is the spirit of the new law. It's more like if...say you're workmate is constantly harassing you...hitting you or not "hitting" you, but saying mean and evil things like "have you gained weight since yesterday?" or gods you smell bad, have you got your period?" then you (not you, but me, because you're a guy) can have him rot in prison for no less than four years....

No doubt there's a lot of BS going on in Colombian workplaces. The women have been putting up a lot, but the attitude is definitely changing. About time, too. The society is transforming, slowly but surely, people are playing more by rules, the jungle is receding. That there will always be people who rue the fact that the Colombian society will lose some of its more pictoresque qualities by this process is inevitable.
