In the Colombian Culture, what happens if the Husband catches his wife cheating in a Marriage?

This can be an intresting topic. I heard many cultura things about marriages and how serious they can be in South America. But I am intrested to know about Colombia. What is expected or what happens when a Husband catches his wife cheating with another man? Or vise versa?? I don't know what south american country this is, but I was told that the Husband had the legal right to kill his wife, like in Muslim culture as long as the police cannot catch him in the act or obtain him withing 24hrs. I dont' know what latin country this is, but its something I heard. So, this striked my curiosity about Colombia's culture. What happens? Does the Husband hunt down his wife, or does he simply accept it or does he divorce her? Or vice versa, does the wife go crazy and kill her Husband or the woman who is taking her Husband. I know its sounds little crazy. But this is tales I hear. Like miss bobbit cutting off her Husband's you know what...Now this woman has layed a stereotype on latin women for some people. And comments or the culture or law in Colombia, or legal rights of the spouses in this situation?

crimes of passion The times when you could stab your wife eleven times and then shoot her if caught in bed with another man are long gone in Colombia, thank gods. There used to be a clause in law that mitigated the punishment for such brutality (cometido en un estado de inmensa pena y dolor), but it has been taken away from the books. The civilized thing, of course, is to do it gringo way: give the guy a glass of whisky and let's talk this out.

era: "ira y dolor" Nah, not for me....I like being married:))))) That depends, of course, who you're married to.

You sure got that right, Desideria!

not to make people upset But just so you know it still is legal in Texas to kill your spouse when caught in the act of adultry.

oh my gosh! Now I'm really upset...that doesn't sound very "civilized"...but then again, I believe you still have death penalty in the state of Texas and Florida at least, maybe in several other states.

Actually 38 states have the death penalty in the US although six of them have not executed anyone since 1976. When I mentioned this to my Colombian relatives, they were all in favor of it and wished Colombia had the death penalty too.

strange... When the topic of death penalty has been brought up in conversation, my Colombian family and friends have expressed exactly the opposite view: being proud that they don't have it in Colombia, as a proof that it's a "modern" or "civilized" society. I guess it depends on who they are talking with...

Cheat So, generally, the Colombianas do not tend to cheat or stray on side with a certain someone. Think of a long-distance relationship.

Would you all say that's the general consensus -if it can be made- about Colombian women?

Actually, it cannot be an actual general consensus, but what's the take on agreeing that they don't generally cheat?

I know this is an extreme generalization.

What do you do when you catch your wife cheating? Letting the other man have her is the greatest revenge you can do.

Be careful OR she might purposely do this or make this up, just to see you have any others...Colombian women are very smart and always suspect their man is cheating in Colombia from what I seen. One of my Novias, was a serious jealous type. Always questioning me about my whereabouts...

Reply Well, In Colombia the women are less likely to cheat on their man. Look at the women to men ratio/poverty. If a woman cheats she's gone, the guy better have alot more than her husband and be willing to take care of her. But if you are a gringo here and your woman there, truth of the matter is she prolly has a boyfriend there. Examples that I have seen. I go to e restaurant in Cali Colombia. talking to the good looking waitress she says shes going to be married in a few months to an American. A few minutes later a car pulls up and the driver waves her to come to him. She does and hugs and kisses him...surely thats not her American boyfriend lol. Another time I am dating a beautiful girl she says she will be with her parents/uncles tonight. I am sitting on a sidewalk cafe and who just happens to show up with another man..you got it. Then I was dating another woman who used my cell phone and to find out later from calling the number myself she called her Novio/boyfriend. A friend of mine who travels there also has experianced the same thing. So be careful guys..there is good and bad everywhere...I still say when you get the right Colombian woman that truly loves you...no one can ever love you like that..
