IN-N-OUT OR HAMBURGUESAS DEL CORRAL?

Soon I'll be going to Bogota for three weeks. Everytime friends and family come to Los Angeles and I take them for a quick bite to In-N-Out Hamburguers, it never fails, they say, "These are good but never as good as Hamburguesas del Corral.'' Well I've never tasted those and I'm finally going to have the chance to try them out. I'm also curious to try Juan Valdez to see how it compares to Starbucks. Any suggestions on new or old restaurants? I also want to go to Andres Carne de Res. What's good? What's new? What's a must? (restaurants wise). I'm interested in authentic Colombian food but I'll try Japanese and Mexican as well. Any ideas will be appreciated.

At Juan Valdez I recommend 'el nevado de arequipe', it's delicious! I love Corral burgers, they're big and juicy!

Thanks for the advice on the flame-grilled burger; I'll have to give it a try. To date, I've probably only had the fried ones and wondered what all the fuss was about since they aren't anything special. El Corral Gourmet, on the other hand, makes some good burgers as does El Rodeo.

Re Juan Valdez v. Starbucks:

- II think you'll find the coffee-of-the-day (plain black coffee: no sugar, no milk, no cream) better at Juan Valdez since Starbucks has a propensity to over-roast some of their single origins and blends.

- If you're a big fan of straight espresso, some say Starbucks will win because (to my knowledge), Juan Valdez only serves Colombian beans, which are arabica, and purists say ya' gotta have a little robusta to make the best espresso

- As for espresso-based drinks with milk, cream, sugar, cocoa, whipped cream, ice cream, chocolate, cinnamon and the kitchen sink thrown in, I don't think it makes any difference what kind of coffee is in them.

I wanted access to health care, housing and education, but, no, I get potholes, trash and silicone tits instead. -Desi.

For the best coffee brewing, look for one with the cone (Melita#4 type, for a larger machine) paper filter, not the Mr. Coffee type basket. They're are usually European, and might be a bit pricey. I have used a Krupps Aroma-Kontrol for several years. It is very fast and makes a great brew. Mine has an insulated carrafe, and no hot plate. It keeps the coffee hot for a few hours, without cooking it.

I have tried to use the gold filters in that type machine, but the oils go through, and I don't like that.

And for the grinding, the finer, the better.

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

El Corral Hamburgers are nothing but a glorified Burger King burger. Colombians swear they are better than any American Burger and what they mean is that they are better than any McDonalds Hamburger. Our Real burger joints kick their Colombian El Corral's Butt. Try their Pizza from Jenos, it is even worse yet Colombians eat it up.

Andres Carne de Res is nice. It is all about the atmosphere. Dark, rustic and festive ambience is what attracts people. They even pay actors dressed up as famous people from the past (Marx brothers, Marilyn Monroe etc.) to come around and entertain you informally as they travel around the Restaurant. It's a lot of fun but expect a big Gringo bill ( > $25.00/person). I can't remember the exact amount I paid, just that it was pricey by Colombian standards.

The experience of In-N-Out and El Corral are two different things.

In-N-Out is the (relatively) cheap and delicious place you go with your friends for a great hamburger. It's cheaper than most other hamburger places, but it tastes very fresh and natural, and it's cooked by enthusiastic, (relatively) well paid college students. It's very casual, and anybody can afford it.

El Corral is (relatively) expensive and delicious. It's the place you go when you want a great hamburger, because it's hard to find a decent one anywhere for cheap. It tastes fresh and natural, but is cooked by some regular people. It's has an american theme to it, usually with murals of american celebrities. It's cool because it is an attempt at having an american experience. The problem is that you feel like you're getting ripped off. Especially when you know around the corner you can go to Crepes & Waffles and have the full restaurant experience with a healthy, extensive menu for about the same price.

In-N-Out is famous for being so addictive that people including celebrities will go to great lengths for one. When I was in Iraq, one of my Army buddies got one freeze dried and sent to him. When I visited California after about 6 months away, I didn't get a chance to go there because of my (then) vegetarian girlfriend. We had a 2 hour wait at the airport and I decided to take a taxi ride to go get an In-N-Out burger. Unfortunately the In-N-Out was closed, and opened too close to the flight.

I'd say an In-N-Out Double Double Animal Style (grilled chopped onions & cheese), is just about as awesome as a Corral w/ Cheese & Guacamole on the side, but afterward I feel like I got a great deal with In-N-Out, and ripped off by El Corral.

I'd say the fries are better from In-N-Out, they slice and cook them constantly all day, while Corral uses packaged McCain fries you can find many other places.

In-Out Double-Double $2.45 + tax
El Corral Double Meat & Cheese about $12000 pesos or about $5.25
A 16oz soft drink costs $3000 while just next door, they'll sell you a 16oz soda in a bottle for $1200, or beer for that matter.

Id say she obviously does,nt consider you hot if she set you up like chicken ready to be plucked.Sure sounds like a distinct possibilty.Id do a little backround check on her.
Concerning el corral burgers ...in this canucks opinion not special...ive had them a few times and found them big/sloppy and did,nt really have much of a charbroiled taste.I prefer homemade bbq but id rather have dairy queen or aw than an el corral.

I paid $5.26 USD for a double double (double meat, double cheese) with an order of french fries. What did you pay?

So what's with the past post about El Corral being over the top when it comes to prices? I think I read somewhere a burger meal at El Corral was 25,000 COP. I've been to Medellin numerous times and never had the urge to go to that particular restaurant (fast food joint) nor have I had the desire to go to Burger King or Micky D's so I'm personally not familiar with their pricing or quality of their food.

The Corralisima is the best burger el corral has. The smaller one in combo is 22,000 or so.

Escape Artist says on May 14, 2009, 12:42:

I would never think about going to a sit down nice restaurant to chow down a burger. The only time I eat hamburgers is when I'm on the go and need a quick bite to eat and if an IN-N-OUT is nearby I will seek them out. If I'm going to sit down at a nice or semi-nice restaurant to eat meat it will be for a steak at Ron y Vinolos or Angus Brangus but at El Corral? Never, no matter how inexpensive they are I just couldn't bring myself to sit down at "nice" restaurant and eat a "burger".

22,000 for a small burger combo meal? Absurd!

Since when is el corral a nice restaurant?

They are mostly in food courts and there aren't even waiters. I usually pick them up to go.

Hell, you can go to La Grappa in Parque Lleras and enjoy a wonderful lunch which includes soup, entree, a glass of wine and desert along with great service for around 11,000 COP so why would anyone go to El Corral is beyond me!

And as a bonus they have a card and you get it stamped each time you visit for lunch and after six meals you get one free.

Sometimes I feel like having a burger.
