In Medellin Now-- This is Absolutely One of The Most Beautiful Cities Anywhere

I hadn´t visited Medellin in nearly 7 years, and am struck by how absolutely stunningthis city is. The combination of amazing vegetation, jaw-dropping mountains, modern infrastructure, cleanliness and charm makes it undoubtedly one of the most beautifl cities on earth --and I´ve been everyhere! Why I continue to live in Chicago is beyond me....

I will post some pictures of Medellin soon. I have hundeds.

I personnaly haven't been impressed AT ALL by Medellin : any modern and clean southern brasilian city like Curitiba, Belo Horizonte or Porto Alegre (as mid-sized cities like Ribeiro Preto, Goiania, Londrina, Bauru, ect ...) have done since long the way that Medellin is just beginning to do. The women didn't impressed me as well (I find them too short), as the people, who were just as nice (and as bad) as anywhere else in south america.

What is endlessly described here like a "hidden gem" or a "undiscover secret" is IMO very largely over-rated.

Yet I'm still curious, but not that hurry, to see other parts of the country.

Most beautiful cities anywhere, before Medellin ?

Paris, Nice, Roma, Bologna, Budapest, Kiev, Prague, Barcelona, Vientiane, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Bandung, Jogja, Hong Kong, Rio, Buenos Aires, Goiania, Florianopolis ....

go2pr Then why are you so tired of Brazil, as you posted on a thread last year wanting info on Colombian night clubs???
I've met many guys like you in my travels in Colombia. They tell me how great Brazil is, they live there, there are so many women. When I ask them if Brazil is so great, what are they doing in Colombia?? They stumble & bumble & mumble, but never give me a straight answer. But it's interesting, they all have many things in common, some being: all are socially inept, unpresentable, and so unattractive they couldn't get laid in a whorehouse. Now, of course go2pr, I'm not saying you fall into this catagory, but in all of your recent posts, you brag about how great & beautiful Brazil is, how there are so many beautiful women, and how you have so many women, but you are tired of this and want to go to Colombia. And when you go to Colombia, you aren't impressed with Medellín (the most beautiful city in Colombia), and in your posts you bash colombia and hype-up Brazil. What's up with you go2pr?? There must be a problem (deep seeded) with you...you just can't find happiness??
My advice is: stay in Brazil!!!

To teach you something, I'm perfectly happy here : Sao Paulo shrines above all for the guy looking for social life, good music, late-night parties, high quality women, fine clubs, awesome nightlife, good food, ect ...... And that's not even counting with the nearby beach towns in the beautiful Litoral Norte like Camburi, Maresias or Ubatuba, or the mountain forests, caves, waterfalls, and other parks and natural reserves throughout the State.

Sorry to have found Medellin quite dull, but as this is a discussion board .....

Gadianton says on May 29, 2005, 15:26:

Are You Serious Hunter? You said "I look over my shoulder less here than when I am in London"? Then how do you explain Medellin having a peak 6,804 murders in 1992 to London's average of 180 to 200 since that time? Even in 2002 Medellin had 4,933 murders - with it's populace gone from 2 million in '92 to 3 million during that period.

So your telling me that a city that's been 2.5 to 3.5 times larger and had 25 times to 40 times less murders, is more dangerous than Medellin? A remarkable coincidence! I guess it was just your personal experience eh?

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Gadianton says on May 29, 2005, 15:35:

London Is Not Medellin Hunter! You also said "I wouldn't walk around large parts of London at 8pm, without taking security precautions either" in reference to Medellin.

Personally, I think you'd find very few people who are unwilling to walk around the overwhelming majority of London at that time of the evening. And the worst you'd expect in London when you do get in trouble is a punch in the face, or merely intimidation by youths without coming to physical harm. At least in the vast majority of incidents. Medellin of course is rather different.

Hunter says on May 30, 2005, 10:45:

Gadianton & greenday I suggest you go and live in London for 2.5 years and then Medellin for the same amount of time, then you will work it out for yourself which is far safer.

If you stay away from certain areas in Medellin, you are highly unlikely to encounter a problem, where as in London, you will encounter problems everywhere, I have been stabbed, attacked with a bottle, I can give you another dozen things, funny thing, I never go out to bars in London, this all happened during the daytime, while I am going about everyday activities. None of the places I had a problem were classed as bad areas, ordinary to good neighbourhoods.

Also I know Colombians who are living in London, they didn't come from dangerouse neighbourhoods in Colombia, but they say that they have NEVER had a problem in Colombia, but they have had several in London, the last trip in April, I was talking to a Mexican guy from Mexico City, he again did not come from a bad neighbourhood, but he said that he has had several problems there and found London a far worse place than Mexico City can go on and on.

I talk some Colombians in Colombia who have had big problems in Colombia, but the majority have no problems to the odd minor one.

Go and live there for 4 years, don't hang in bad areas, find out if the person you get any information on is an eternal optimist, or pessimist or preferably a realist before you listen to what they say. Then make up your own mind. Basing information on stats is a seriously flawed way of viewing things unless you know how they complied the stats and more importantly in this case who were the people killed, I personnaly have made a very good living by reading the information behind the stats.

Go and live in both places for a few years then decide, if I was alone in my view, I would think there was something wrong with me, but the majority of foreigners I know here have never had a problem or the odd minor one, they have been living here 2-37 years.

Once I made the rounds in Medellin, I was very underwhelmed. Staying in just a small corner called Parque Lleras is silly - that's like calling central park representative of Manhattan.

I do find the Medellin women beautiful though - no doubt. I was in Rio 2 weeks before I went to Brazil and was not impressed with the women there at all. Though I have been told other areas, including Sao Paolo are much better in this regard. But yes, Medellin does have its charms....But let's be a little real. That's my 2cents

Hunter You're mistaken Hunter, I've been researching crime stats for many years and have lived in London. Your viewpoint is so off the wall that it can't possibly be taken seriously. I'm wondering wether you work for the Medellin tourist board or something? London has a negligable murder rate while Medellin had the worst murder stats of any city in the world for many years, only recently dislodged by the brutally violent Honduran metropolis of San Pedro Sula.

Medellin still has very few foreigners despite what you said. I also think you were being a bit selective with the truth when you mentioned Colombians and Mexicans living in London. London more dangerous than Medellin and Mexico City? Complete and utter nonsense.

fosth says on May 31, 2005, 02:45:

I would have to agree with Hunter. I accept your point Gadianton about the Murder rate being higher in Medellin than London but i think you're missing Hunter's point.
The chances of being Murdered indiscriminatly in any city are pretty low. He's saying abount the threat of Robbery,Mugging etc. In London this can happen in some of the most expensive residential areas of London (Holland Park, Knightsbridge, Kennsington) and regularly happens to friends in areas such as Clapham and Islington.
This happens in Medellin as well but i doubt it would happen in the most affluent areas of the city. I felt perfectly safe in Sud-America after dark, however walking down Clapham high street in the evening that's a different matter!!

Medellin is Paradise I have been just about everywhere. I have experienced many cultures up close and personal. My Colombian friends always told me to visit Medellin and stay with their families. I was always apprehensive because of the warnings against Americans. However when I met a paisa in Rio I decided to visit. I was absolutely blown away. I would live there is a second if I was not concerned about saftey. I do plan to purchase a place in Poblado next year. Hopefully over time I will either become less concerned about safety. I hope it is not really an issue but it still is in my head. Maybe Medellin will continue to become a safer city as it has been becoming for the last 5 years. I never felt even close to threaten in the city and I traveled throughout the area. However I am concerned that all it takes is one incident to lose everything. In the US you get mugged etc. but usually don't lose your life. My fear is that in Medellin an incident has a lot higher fatality rate. Maybe I will be proven wrong.

flaleo says on May 31, 2005, 05:51:

Hunter and I don't usually agree, but his point is so right on. Look at an extreme example to illustrate his point on your statistics... if there were a million murders in Medellin in the last 12 months, but all but one occurred in one neighborhood and all victims were known gang members, then how would that compare to a city with even 100 murders? Well, that city (London in this example) would be 100x more dangerous (murder risk).

If you wish for a more technical, professional explanation, then don't assume a statistic represents a probability without consideration for conditionality.

Hunter says on May 31, 2005, 06:19:

fosth I am glad somebody gets it.

I pay attention to crime stats but I prefer to see what is going on around me, and see what happens to the people who are liveing there, I picked out the Colombians and the guy from Mexico City because this a Colombian board and I see Mexico City mentioned in posts regarding violence. They both have high murder rates, there was a guy there from Florence Italy on the same trip, who also said much the same, but I know nothing about Florence. The vast majority of people who get murdered is not random, in London the vast majority are low lifes, much the same in Colombia.

I worked in a office in the West end of London, also looked after quite a few rented properties, the rented properties generally short term lets and about 85% of the people staying in them are not British. The majority of the people who worked in the office were British, a great deal of both groups of people had problems, virtually none were ever reported to the Police, generally only if there was an insurance claim involved, none of them were murdered, just muggings and beatings, the worse beating was a guy who couldn't walk for 3 months after it.

A lot boils down to how you live, if you just get on the underground around the rush hour and head back and for to work or in a car, I found that people generally had few problems in London. BUT if they walked around/cycled a lot, the vast majority had a problem sooner or later, I unfortunately lived in London for 7.5 years, something might not happen for 2 years, then several in a few months, average was once every nine months.

For comparisons I lived in Strata 3 – 5 neighbourhoods in London, in Colombia Strata 3 – 6, I live much the same life except I go out to drinking in Medellin in the evenings, never once went out in London drinking, I would rather save my money then for 2 months of holidays a year and to get out of the shit hole. One interesting thing is that for about 3.5 years I lived in a town about 45 mins away from London, where I never had any problems, nor did the people I knew, I thought it was all a load of scaremongering about crime out of control in the UK, after moving to a City, then I realise they are half right crime is out of control in parts of the UK.

One thing that quite a few people don’t seem to count living in what I call target Cities, sooner or later a nuclear bomb is going to go off, personally I think it will only be a little one (won’t be on the scale of the Japanese ones) and in which target City/s is any ones guess, but I am 100% certain it will happen, I don’t class Medellin as a target City, but I sure do count London, then all the stats that people like quoting will be out the window.

DITTO - HUNTER POSTS I know that Hunter's statements about Medellin ring true because he's walked the walk before he talked the talk (I have met him personally). He's a down-to-earth foreign person well educated in the art of survival (and living) in Medellin and elsewhere in Colombia. As he says there are many foreign persons living in Medellin but there not standing on the streets with a sign advertising that fact. The foreign people that I have met in Medellin are living there by their own choice for the quality of life, the beauty of the city, the culture and the quality people that accept you into their homes and lives.

I am certainly not a world traveler but I have traveled many parts of the Americas. I have never found a nicer city than Medellin for it's climate, it's peoples, it's modern infastructure and culture. Santiago, Chile is a great city but thousands of miles away from the area that I need to be located in (and many flying hours).

My only complaint with Colombia is that the laws and regulations of Colombia make doing business there (as a foreign person) extremely difficult and unrewarding (for the most part).

If there is a nicer city (than Medellin) in Mexico, Central America or the northern portion of South America I would appreciate someone stepping forward to share this information with me because I haven't been able to find it. Panama City is certainly another city of honorable mention for it's immigration friendly policies that are bringing foreign people from all over the world to their soil to live and invest.
