In Bogota now what?

Hi all. I am in Bogota staying in La Candelaria. Now what do I do? I thought there was a lot of tourist stuff to do around here. I didn't see anything on the drive here. To be honest I am a little scared to go out. Some teenagers but up my cab on the way here. They refused to clear the street, so the cabbie just went through them. Tomorrow I want to take like a tour bus thing. Does anybody have any info. on that.

Thanks

hang out in the hotel lobby. Get to know the staff. calculate and assess if there really is anything dangerous. Try to walk with crowds and act as if you belong to them.

Keep 80% of your money in your hotel room. Make sure you have a photocopy of your passport with you and your real passport in the hotel room or in your bag.

I stayed twice in the Candelaria before its was in vogue in 195-96, used to walk around the neighborhood all the time until 10 pm at night, alone. Never had a Problem, day or night!

Why in the world did you not research this and ask questions before arriving in Bogota? There are tons of things to do there. But yes, Monseratte is typically on everyone's short list.

Head to Parque de la 93. Maybe Chia although that is kind of far.

What kind of stuff do you like to do? Nightclubs? Dining?

Botero Museum, Museo Nacional, walk around zona rosa and parque 93. Carry just enough money USD50 for food and taxis. If your spanish is not good stick to the basics. Get help from the frontdesk.

Why are all you international types with an obsession with zona rosa and parque 93 sending this poor fella half way to panama? He is in La Candelaria.

So once you have been to the Botero Museum, head down Kr4 past the biblioteca nacional and you will come to a small pizza joint on your left, they are for my money the best most authentic pizzas in bogota (far better than the tatty slop at pizza 1969) have yourself a couple of aguilas and you will still get change from US$5. afterwards carry on down Kr4 to Avenida Jimenez, there is a crepes and waffles there, Voila! pudding.

At Av Jimenez look to your left (west) just next to City TV there is a small Italian restaurant. go back there for breakfast tomorrow, envuelto, scambled egg, ham, orange juice, toast and chocolate for 6 mil pesos.

Just on the other side of avenida jimenez the gold museum, over la septima from the gold museum, the book markets and crazy industrial style domestic architecture

Fancy a weird night out? go to the piano bar on calle 10 con 3, good cocktail list, interesting ambience and the two dubious blokes that own it are always shitfaced. Dirt cheap, get hammered for less.

The Pasteleria francesa Kr 3 between 9 & 10, there's your onces for you if you are a cake fan

Calle 12 just south of Kr2 is a superb italian restaurant set in the courtyard of a colonial house (i believe it is also a hotel) Head east to Kr2 from there, hang a left and yup, another ice cream shop for pudding, carry on northwards and it opens into a little square with some cool bars and cafes, students hanging out playing instruments and juggling. For the headstrong head down the little alley for some cantina style drinking.

Johnny--I could never understand this Phenomenon either why Tourists would travel 1000s of miles just to run into more tourists from their own country ; Crazy IMO! I avoid Zona Rosa, its toursists and its High prices like the plague! Lots of old interesting Buildings to explore in La Candelaria btw.

What about a tour bus like they have in most cities? I read in my book that they have one but they didn't say where to catch it.

You're right in the middle of backpacker central with loads of other travelers all around you and you can't figure out what to do? Did you do zero research before visiting a city of 8+ million people? Do you at least have a guide book?

To start, which hotel/hostel are you staying at?

Cheers,
Terry

Excellent suggestions from Johnny...

They don't really have one of those tour buses, surprisingly. You are not in western Europe or the US anymore Toto.
Happy hour in Centro, near where you are, sitting upstairs, outside, in one of the bar restaurants all along the main drag, great for people watching, having a couple of cool brews.
Parque 93 and Zona Rosa is where the beautiful yuppie types are, but expensive.
The National Museum is very interesting, and you have to go to Monserrate, but make sure it is a clear day.
A couple of restaurants in La Calara are nice, have good views.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

Ask the hotel staff about restaurants that have live traditional music, vallenato, salsa, etc..
Cafe Crepes, not to be confused with Crepes and Waffles, near Santa Ana mall, is a very romantic reasonably priced candlelit restaurant to take Cidy, if she is still in the picture.

Holy crap buddy, the Abadia Colonial is one of the nicest boutique hotels in the whole bloody country. I know the owner, Paolo and he has made that into an exquisite little hotel with a great staff. He'll have all kinds of suggestions of things to do, as will his staff.

You're right in the middle of the historic district. There's loads of bars filled with travelers from all over the place right outside the front door of the Colonial. Get out and start having some fun.

Sorry to be so harsh, but honestly... if you're finding a touristic neighbourhood like the one you're in too intimidating then you should get your butt back to the US right now and never travel again. Come on, time to man-up...

Cheers,
Terry

Cidy-- there is a bit of an odor of pura mierda in the air.....I still can't believe that some dude would travel to another country, and plan to be in a city, like Bogota, by himself, and not have a plan or know what you were going to do?? and then plant his face in front of, I assume his laptop, and ask people on an online community what to do, to while away the day....

I don't have much room to talk, since I am probably one of the most disorganized, live for the moment travelers around, but usually I have the skeleton of a strategy planned out prior to landing somewhere..

Now that Cidy is more than likely out of the picture, if there is a cidy, a new handle for you just maybe, "I AM A PAYASO"
