Impressions of Medellin

I wanted to give some advice to single male travelers visiting Medellin....Get ready for culture shock as social life takes on a different form than the states. It has been mentioned here but usually in a casual way. Going out to clubs and bars can be a little uncomfortable and challenging as a single. Make friends with locals to have a completely different social experience. Better yet, try to meet people online before you go. I have never visited a place with this social dynamic before but to explain it simply, people tend to party in groups (friends and family). And if your Spanish is poor, this can create additional challenges. Of course there are exceptions, as I went out single to Mangos and had a great time (after connecting with other singles). In contrast I went to OZ with locals after doing shots at a bar across the street from cinco puertas, and had an amazingly fantastic time.
Luckily I had a novia to go out with (who I met online prior to my visit) so I did not have to frequent the club/bar scene. Also if you like to gamble, Vegas style blackjack and roulette (in front of Olveido centro commercio) and many other places.
I was pleasantly surprised by all the available food choices, from sushi to pizza to mexican...You name it. The pizza in lleras was the best (new restaurant next to Taico). As far as the paisas are concerned very friendly but count your change...Several times people (mistakenly?) shorted me.
As for the ladies, there are some attractive chicas, but if you are from NY, Miami or LA you probably will not be impressed, plus Medellin has so much more to offer. By the way, the Americans living full time in Medellin, (quite a few) seemed much nicer and well informed than your typical average American. Seems Medellin is "paradise found" for the over 50 single male retiree.

I prefer to hate the loud-mouth who thinks his OPINION is fact.

Bo feelings either way for the player or the game.

Just because you have been to Colombia, that does NOT mean that you are anywhere near an expert on the place. Sorry. Truth hurts.

Nope, they didn't mistakenly shorted you. They shorted the new gringo in town.
And as for your ladies comment, I couldn't agree more. I still don't understand how some people say the most beautiful women in the world live in Colombia... Uhmmm this could not be further from the truth.

if you want to meet a nice crowd of locals who aren't interested in tourism or tourists in poblado...and i assure you, that's hard to do.

go to 'la casa de los cinco puertos'. it's about three blocks west of the body shop along the creek. after 4 or 5 in the after noon folks start to gather. it's the last bastion of old poblado still in existence. you'll enjoy it. it ain't fancy and goes back about 50 years i've been going there since the late 80's and with exception of a fix up this past year, it hasn't changed. when i first started going there, the streets around (many) were still dirt.

there's another place in sabaneta 'por si lo vin' goes way back. can't tell you how to get there as i went with my family and wasn't paying attention. great, all locals. if you go to the main square in sabaneta just ask around or check the paginas amarillo.

too, once you meet some poblado locals who aren't arrogant or condescending pricks, you can ask about the after hours places up in the homes in las palmas. the best.

The truth hurts buddy. Every time I've been to Colombia all I see is a bunch of hoochies with their muffin tops and camel toes overexposed with flaming red dyed hair and frosty pink lipstick. Maybe your type but not mine at all.

There are far hotter women in L.A. than Colombia, but the Paisas are far sexier and way nicer. The combination of pretty girls who have a small town friendliness, strong family sensibility and latin passion for their man puts them way over the top. Not sure where that exists in the U.S. I have lived lots of years in NYC, San Francisco, and L.A. and definintely been around in the best looking/ hip circles -- haven't found anything close.

dbl....i never hung out in new york, but los angels, san francisco and all in between, commonly called the land of pretty people, leave a lot to be desired....in short what you mentioned above. if you want close family attitude, i say with chagrin, america (us) comes up short. after 20 years in colombia, your comment is real close to home.

i've been married 8 times and all but three were born in the u.s. all very fine ladies, but they all lacked something...not sure exactly what, hard to put my finger on it. another was born in austria of american parents and she too is wonderful, and the other, was born in tehran iran.

now, being married to my colombian wife for twenty years.....you might guess that there's something more there. mind you, i find no fault in the other mother's of my children, they're all great strong ladies....they just wouldn't deal with my philandering or lady chasing. nor should they have. i understand that now, but didn't want to understand it then...especially with a world full of hotties and me over sexed and priveledged. i was way too cavalier for my own good and hurt a number of folks along the way. finally i met and married my colombian wife. and i might add that although we got married for all the wrong reasons, here it is all these years later and we're still together. you figure.

i find no fault with my birthright nor patronage, but i found something in colombia that made me change my affiliations, pernanently.

thank GOD for simon.....jeje

I love the crispetas at the movies, here in the states we call it "Kettle Corn". A pleasant surprise at Olviedo, and way better than plain old popcorn...Don't forget the reserved seating for the movies (which you can select at the window). The movie crowd appeared well to do....guess going to the movies is a luxury to the average Colombian......

For gym nuts I recommend Body Tech in Vizcaya mall (actually seems to be the only functioning business there aside from the movie theater). Great equipment and friendly staff along with a few friendly expats. I must say the most amazing physically fit females bodies I've ever seen (not that I was looking).

So you're saying that the only one who stood up for that is your Colombian wife?
