importing my scooter

I've got a 86 FXR Harley Davidson in Calif. What approx. would it cost to have sent to Medellin? (I'm at work in Ecuador and talked to my wife and she said that their is lots of Harleys on the streets passing the El Pablado area this morning...some sort of a sponsored ride or something? Anyone know about it? Is there a club in Medellin for Harleys?....I kinda hate to see the cobwebs growing on my scot in storage.

Can't do it Unfortunately No car/motorcycle/Suv/pickup trucks can be imported legally from the US to Colombia(diplomatic import for temp.use may be a exception) If they are not of the current year(2005) and then with 10,000 miles(more or less ?)or less. 1986-not possible legally. I have heard some have brought them in illegally, para la izquierda, shipped first to a 3rd country, but you would have to ask others about that route. What your Wife may have seen was the local HOG(harley owners group) on a weekly/monthly run. I know there is a now a country chapter and may have several local subchapters, most likely in the population centers like Medillin, Cali, Bogota. Google it-its there. They also hold a Colombian Version of our Bike Week-saw on on the Coast in its 2nd year. Too bad you can't get that '86 Harley down there to Col; As Bikers there love Harlies, you could make a small fortune reselling it there.

Hey Mike, want to go to Mexico with me and import a few Renault R4 models? I am itching to buy 2 or 3 and Mexico looks easiest route, we could ship to Tampa or Miami. I have a pal in the UK who swapped a 1.9 litre diesel into one and a 7KW electric motor into another.

My wife has even given me the go-ahead!

HOG run Youre right Mike, The HOG chapter in Bogota had a run in Cali in May, Medellin this weekend 2nd thru the 5th, Bogota in August,Pereira in October and Giradot in Dec.
It's probally safe to ride in a group, But I'm not so sure about a gringo and his lady riding solo thru Colombia.
Thanks

Hi Jim! Hey those Renaults are nice but the only problem is, how do you get them past US Customs where they check for the DOT Conversions? That is a real Pain. That would be nice with a 1.9 Turbo Diesel! In Argentina, a friend of mine has one those New Peugot Turbo Diesels-says diesels are very popular in her Town called Salta(nw argentina-650kms nw of BA) Man, here in Miami they are killing us on Diesel fuel-cheapest I find it is around $2.20 and in MY neighborhood its $2.35-2.45 gallon!

Mike According to an import company that imports Land Rovers from the UK pre-1973 models don't need to meet the DOT standards.

I know we are getting ripped off with the diesel prices in the US, it is a shame.

importing You can import your hog to Colombia via "underground" channels, I have done it with my riceburners, you just need to find the correct person to help you register the bike down here, it would have to be for personal use and not for business,(resale), it can be done, people do it all the time, the people that I ride with on weekends have brought their bikes down from the U.S., used bikes. Cars are a whole different story, you "really" have to know people down here for that one. By the way, I am an ex patriot living down here with the wife and two kids, I was born in Cali, Colombia and lived in the U.S. from the time I was 6, I am 39 now and have been living down here in Bogota for a year, would not trade it for the world, I have solid connections down here, if you guys need any "help" let me know.

Importing to the US Kernow, I think there's an exemption that lets each US citizen (don't know about resident) import one and only one, grey market vehicle in their lifetime. A friend of mine brought in a Landcruiser model unavailable in the US this way. Once it's in and legallly registered, the vehicle can be bought and sold just like any other.

you absolutely cannot import any used car or motorcycle into Colombia, the only exeption is the diplomatic channel, the regular joe blow U.S. citizen or resident or other cannot, cannot legaly do it, ilegally is another story.

That's good news Mr. Hollywood, my wife is a US citizen so I can at least get one Renault 4 in. Come to think of it I could have my father-in-law get one and my mother and then sell them to me.

Good tip. I will check into it.

So, from what you say... driving your own car down there won't make any difference since you can't legalise it! Am I right?

correct You are correct, there is no way, but the illegal way to "legalize" it.
