Importation costs for Harley or other type of Big Cruiser Bike?

I was wondering how much it would cost to import a Harley or other big bike into Colombia? I have a Honda VTX 1800 here in the States and love it. I ride almost every day and think it would be a blast to have in Barranquilla or Santa Marta. Bikes here are so cheap...used ones. So even if it costs a bit to ship and import it, it seems like it might be worth it.

Do they charge you the taxes based on size of the engine? How? I do not see hardly any big cruisers on the streets there.

Has anyone had a bike on the coast for cruises between Cartagena, Barranquilla, Santa Marta? How is the ride? Lots of bugs?

Are helmets required when driving in the cities?

What is up with the orange vests?

The last time I was in Bogota I saw a Road King. The only big bike I have seen in 4 trips. I looked on the Harley web site and there is a Harley dealer in Bogota. I imagine it will cost more to buy in the US and ship it there rather than buy it there.

Most people here ride rice burners, but those rice burners are getting pretty good these days.

Helmets are mandatory in most cities in Colombia, as are the vests. The vests have your license plate number on them and come in flourescent colors.

Do they have to be florescent?

It would not look too cool with a nice Harley...using a big orange vest.

And the helmets...can you use the 1/2 helmets like here?

You can buy a black vest. In fact I´m sure you can use whatever you want as long as you stitch the license plate numbers on the front and back.

Orange yellow or green. I never see green though, just lots of orange and yellow.

There are some real hardcore bikers here who still wear orange and yellow. It's just not a rule you mess around with, they take it very seriously here.

The typical Colombian helmets are as functional as teats on a boar hog. They are built like a suvenieur baseball hemet sold at a US baseball stadium with a little foam on the inside. US standard helmets are rare. Full face helmets, much safer, are illegal because of the secario problem. (harder to identify a killer with a covered face) So yes, a small helmet is perfectly fine.

I see lots of people wearing black vests, but the numbers are reflective.

Interesting, I didn´t know full face helmets were illegal. I have a full face helmet with built in sunglasses. With the sunglasses down I don´t think you can see my face at all even close up during the day.
