Import Duty Lists

I have seen a few posts in the past that listed the specific duties for importing certain goods into the US from Colombia. Can anyone post a link to a master list of some sort? I have an opportunity to import some Colombian products for distribution in the US and want to get some info on the related duties.

Thanks,
CG

Vic, Is that list for importing products into Colombia or from Colombia into the US? I ask because the document says that the duties would be payable in Colombian pesos. I am interested in importing from Colombia into the US. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am new to this.

Thanks a lot,
CG

I found something called "Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (2008) (Rev.1)". Is this what I should be using? If I am reading it correctly, it appears that the duty for our particular product is 6%.

I think this is what I need. The codes for the products do match the ones in your document. Do different countries use standardized codes for these types of lists?

Any suggestions on good sources of information for topics related to importing products. I am a software developer by trade so all this is foreign to me. We are looking into a business that my wife can manage once she moves to the US in August.

Thanks for the info.

use vic's link-it's is the same as DIAN has on its web site

The best is DIAN's list or contact their import office in Bogotá. This site will answer a ton of questions: http://www.proexport.com.co In Spanish but there is a "translate to English if you click on the upper left side just above the drop down list.

Gator, Thanks. I'd seen a link to that proexport site on the Houston consulate website, but haven't had a chance to check it out. Do you mean that the DIAN would have information about the duties that the US government charges to import Colombian products into the US?

I found the US International Trade Commission' Tariff Information Center at http://www.usitc.gov/tata/index.htm so I assume that the 6% figure I found there is the general duty. However, I was curious about any differences in duties for countries that fall under the Andean Trade Preference program.

I will be doing lots of research on this topic, but if anyone with experience in importing Colombian products into the US could give me a little direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
CG

Harmonized tariff codes are international.

The U.S. has no free trade deal with Colombia......at least not yet.

ColombianoGringo says on Jun 27, 2008, 07:48:

I realize that there is no trade deal yet, but what are the benefits of the Andean Trade Preference program which was recently exteneded? Does that affect import tariffs in any way?

I believe there were preferential tariffs on certain goods. I do not have access to that list of goods at the moment.

Certain goods are exempt but are classified as native handicraft-cottage industry type stuff.

Canada has a free trade agreement with Colombia. As long as it is not a restricted good and you have a certificate of origin, you are good to go.
