jay...forget the translator...i went in '89 and established a mfg operation in medellin and didn't speak spanish. i didn't have to worry about hanging out with english speaking foreigners, there weren't any. even if there were, i made it a point to only be with locals and force myself to learn the language and customs. it came about surprisingly quickly. not fluency, but certainly sufficient to manage my affairs. i had about 60 employees and managed alright.

nowdays, there's foreigners everywhere and one can manage quite well. too, many colombians speak english now. if not fluently, enough to make communication workable. i'm not a cali fan, spent my 19 years in and around medallo. suggest the same to you. (i should note, i do secretly possess a fondness of those calina legs) in medellin, you'll probably be in and around parke lleras in poblado, and--unfortunately--there's english speakers all over the place. to make your trip really an experience of colombia, get the hell outta poblado, and visit the surrounding pueblos...sante fe de antioquia, el retiro, la ceja, maranilla, carmen de viboral, rionegro, san antonio, tablaso and the whole of llano grande.

don't go just to hang with other gringos, as you'll end up with no clue as to what is the real beauty of lady colombia. i originally went in the late '80's when shooting, killing, bombings and all manner of chaos and meyhem were the order of the day and went on 24/7. it was as dangerous as any war zone in the world....all that aside, there was an underlying romance, seductiveness, etc. to make me look past the horrors and fall in love with a most incredible country. don't miss the opportunity to explore her marvels and beauty, by just hanging out in clubs and bars and chasing chicas. go out and explore her, taste her real charms, treat her with deep, sincere respect and she'll respond by taking you in, embracing you and making of you, one of her devoted admirers.

i'd, personally, put llano grande high on your adjenda, as the beauty, people and surroundings are enough to convert even the worst detractors and demented. trust me, colombia, if seen as she is, will make you sad you might have to leave and (if) after leaving, overpowered by the desire/need to return.

enjoy your trip

coffee beaner says on Dec 6, 2007, 15:27:

They have things here called chiquitecas... it's like clubs for people under 18, they don't sell alcohol though. But why would you wanna go hit on a 14 year old when Medellin is crawling with banging 18 - 35 year old women.

GOD!!! maui, i dropped outta college in the early 60's and went and hung out in maur and kauai just to get away from the acid that was taking over the universities. when dr. leary started the tests at harvard, it spread like wild fire and before long it was at berkeley, and everywhere else. they even started a class at u.c. santa cruz, 'the lsd experience' you guessed it, dropping acid in a college class......ooooooooohboooy. they didn't have the dorms built yet and all the students were livin in trailers. most of the kids gutted the trailers and turned them into teepees and started livin like indians. doin acid, gettin knocked up, having their kids without midwives/drs/hospitals, just up in the dirt on the sides of the hills. damn it was wild and crazy. a bunch of fuckin wild, crazy, stoned and pregnant kids...like myself, without a clue as to where it was all gonna lead. well, here it is 50 years later, i've lived all over the world, and our precious COMMON FATHER, has saw fit to drop me out--finally--in the wanderland of colombia, and i'm still clueless where it all leads. i'm gonna go ask elmo for some advise.

It's kinda hard to find Patron here in Medellin, usually the thing here is Mr. Jose Cuervo.... bring Patron or Cabo Wabo ;)

try the Blanco, jay.
Not that it's my favorite drink; I was in 'very desirable circumstances' the first time I drank that stuff. It was good then. but I understand. I've been saving a bottle here for over two years now.... and, maybe forever.

Ciao! Gustav.
