Cali is safer than Barranquilla, therefore the latter is more fun.

Ain't Columbia wonderful. Especellay Barenkilla?

BAQ is probably safer but you had better like heat and humidity.

I found BAQ to be very safe, but then again I was with friends who have the local knowledge. The heat was quite intense but if I can handle it being from the UK I think anyone can.

BQ is one of the safest cities in Colombia, obviously you have the common crime which everywhere suffers from but if you take care of yourself you will feel safe here. I have heard Cali and Medellín are pretty "caliente" these days.

If you want to have fun in Barranquilla (make sure you spell it right or you'll never get there), go during Carnival. If you want to be safe, then DON'T go during Carnival. 'Nuff said.

You can also call it Curramba if this is makes things easier.

Is it safer than Cali? That depends.............

You should be concerned more with the measures you take for your own personal safety rather than delving into the comparative safety issues of these or any two cities in Colombia. Besides you won't get any answers here on this matter because we expats have our own biases that devolve into long and pointless threads.

For the normal precautions you can search this site because it has been talked about ad naseum. Not wanting to raise your anxiety, I just posted on a recent incident concerning safety and violence in Barranquilla. In brief, the point was that violence can find you no matter how careful you are, and this holds true in any place you find yourself. Still this should in no way dissuade you from coming because the country and its people are worth it.

BAQ is generally hot and humid, but from now until February it is wonderful. Once the sun sets, the climate is fresca - it is drier at this time of year and you can actually feel things cool off.

Last and most importantly, I would stay with this family and heed their advice concerning all safety matters even if it might go against your own personal wishes, especially since this is your first time.

Cheers and buen viaje!
