illegal immigration by country of origin, or where they're all coming from...

i've seen enough about how all you hear about is latino illegals, and not about those coming from europe. well, i went out and found the stats for the top 20 countries of origin for illegals and the numbers. here it is:

All countries 5,000,000
1. Mexico 2,700,000
2. El Salvador 335,000
3. Guatemala 165,000
4. Canada 120,000
5. Haiti 105,000
6. Philippines 95,000
7. Honduras 90,000
8. Dominican Republic 2 75,000
9. Nicaragua 70,000
10. Poland 70,000
11. Colombia 65,000
12. Ecuador 55,000
13. Trinidad & Tobago 50,000
14. Jamaica 50,000
15. Pakistan 41,000
16. India 33,000
17. Ireland 30,000
18. Korea 30,000
19. Peru 30,000
20. Portugal 27,000
Other 764,000

so it looks like europeans are just a little outnumbered.

I take it you're talking about illegal in the US?

I was actually amazed at how many illegals FROM the US that were living in Barcelona, Spain when we lived there. Plenty of people right out of college, young professionals, they went there and just stayed illegally. My wife and I would do it if not for our daughter.

as of 01/06:
mexico: 6570000
el salvador: 510000
guatamala: 430000
phillippines: 280000
honduras: 280000
india: 270000
korea: 250000
brazil: 210000
china: 190000
viet nam: 160000
all others: 2410000

An estimated 8.4 million of the total 11.6 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States in 2006 were from the North America region,
including Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America (see Figure 2). The next leading regions of origin were Asia (1.4 million) and South America (970,000). The 2000 unauthorized
immigrant population was similar in region of origin composition.
Mexico continues to be the leading source of unauthorized immigration to the United States (see Table 3). The estimated unauthorized immigrant
population from Mexico increased from 4.7 million in 2000 to 6.6 million in January 2006. The annual average increase in Mexican unauthorized
immigration to the United States was 315,000 during the 2000-2006 period. The next leading source countries for unauthorized immigrants in 2006 were El Salvador (510,000), Guatemala (430,000), the Philippines (280,000) and Honduras (280,000).
The top ten countries of origin represented 79 percent of the unauthorized immigrant population
in 2006. Although immigration from
Mexico continues to dominate unauthorized population growth, the greatest percentage
increases during 2000-2006 were among
immigrants from India (125 percent), Brazil
(110 percent), and Honduras (75 percent).

I have never heard of the "American Hemisphere." I thought "America" was a continent, or two, depending on the perspective. And, the world generally perceives the word "American" as meaning a person from the United States of America. At least the Colombians, Mexicans, Germans, English, Irish, Russian, Belarussian, Ukranian. Persian, Israeli, French, Latvian, Japanese, and Australian people that I have encountered. Many more, but those were the first I could think of.

2.7 million illegals de Mexico. Please. Maybe in Florida or California. Best estimates are now 12 million (low end) to upwards of 20 million. I would believe the higher.

Florida's population of Mexicans is only 196,000 or only 7.1% of the total immigrant population of 2,767,000. Texas is way ahead with 1,452,000 Mexicans or 59.4% of the total immigrant population of 2,443,000. California takes the prize with 3,785,000 or 43.1% of their total immigrant population of 8,781,000.

I don't know why so many immigrants choose California because Californians absolutely hate Mexicans.

I worked at the Krome Detention Center in Miami for a better part of the 90s-I said here a few times unless one worked there in Immigration, you would be really surprised how many Canadians were Detained and eventually deported home. We had a fair share of Brits also. With the Exception of the Haitians(who almost always came by old unsafe boats)the Cubans who arrived via Fast Boats or from third countries in planes, the Central americans and Mexicans who crossed thru Ca, Az, Texas by foot and then made it to florida by Car or bus, the Rest of the Illegals simply overstayed their Tourist Visas. The US Government really needs to work upgrading US Tourist Visas with a smart Chip and Biometrics, a "Chipped" Visa could alert Immigration when the Visa Expired and whrther or not the Visitor absconded and stayed in the USA or if in fact they went home. That is a glaring deficiency in our Visa(tourisat) program and needs immediate attention.

They came on tourist visas and overstayed them - so technically they are "illegal". It would be wrong, though, to categorise them in the same way as a mexican who risked a border crossing into the US - the contexts are indeed very different.

Nonetheless it highlights another facet of the "illegal immigration" issue - not all are illegal immigrants are dirt poor brown-skinned people seeking a better life in a country with better economic opportunities.

Leeroy says on Sep 1, 2007, 10:15:

Either that, or they are issued a tourist visa on arrival.

Not sure which.

It is very difficult for a US citizen to get a work/residence visa anywhere in Europe.

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Robert Jorge says on Sep 1, 2007, 10:28:

Just did a quick search ... A US citizen doesn't need anything more than a passport to enter Spain, and stay up to 90 days. There are several visa options for a stay longer than 90. The requirements are pretty "normal" and straight forward. It actually looks like less hassle to study in Spain, than it does in Colombia. And in Spain, they will even tolerate the person on the student visa working, "as long as that doesn't interfer with their studies."

So, I guess there probably are lots of illegal immigrants, including US citizens in Spain. But at least for the US citizens, it appears that they are just lazy if they let their 90 days entry permit expire without getting a visa.

Leeroy says on Sep 1, 2007, 10:33:

Probably true - I wonder what the "punishment" is for leaving Spain when it becomes apparent that they have overstayed their visa? Probably not much.

In any case, the Spanish authorities are more concerned about African illegal immigrants than US ones - perhaps rightly so.

California used to be Mexico and as such it has a long standing cultural heritage there. Mexicans are integrated into society probably more than any other immigrant group in California. Ever heard of La Raza? Mecha?? There are countless non-profit organizations designed to help these groups, they are indeed allowed to attend schools and there are educational support systems for learning English (though admittedly not enough). And yeah prop 187 was a horrible law that was passed and then over turned. It isnt a great moment in California history but it was also supported by conservative rich assholes that want their Mexican maid to work harder for less pay (Im sure they also live in Texas). But as a Texan, George Bush puts an ugly stain on your state's history. So forgive and forget brother. Ipdiver.. Who are you talking about? I like learning about history. It seems the United States was "Columbia" at one time.

From Wikipedia:
Common abbreviations of the United States of America include the United States, the U.S., and the U.S.A. Colloquial names for the country include the common America as well as the States. The term Americas, for the lands of the western hemisphere, was coined in the early sixteenth century after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer and cartographer. The full name of the country was first used officially in the Declaration of Independence, which was the "unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America" adopted by the "Representatives of the united States of America" on July 4, 1776.[9] The current name was finalized on November 15, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, the first of which states, "The Stile of this Confederacy shall be 'The United States of America.'" Columbia, a once popular name for the Americas and the United States, was derived from Christopher Columbus. It appears in the name District of Columbia. A female personification of Columbia appears on some official documents, including certain prints of U.S. currency.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of the United States is as an American. Though United States is the formal adjective, American and U.S. are the most common adjectives used to refer to the country ("American values," "U.S. forces"). American is rarely used in English to refer to people not connected to the United States.
