My wife is colombian and is in canada and has a PR visa.In two years she can apply for canadian citizenship.Im wondering if we have a child which is born in canada if we can also register that child as a colombian citizen...after all the mother is colombian. The child would recieve a canadian birth certificate and automatically be canadian...even while the mother is still considered colombian.Or would the fact that that child was born in canada mean that it would have to go the same route as me (canadian) and all the paper work and b.s. to become a colombian citizen?

jinksmiester says on Aug 11, 2007, 11:39: Ya ...that would be a concern. My desire is that this child be able live and attend school and one day work and live where it chooses. If my wife and i decide ...as im sure we will..to live in colombia and have the child attend school there,i want the opportunity to come and go freely for this child. Its my desire for this child to know both its colombian family and roots as well as its canadian and to exsperience life in both. What i would not want is problems should the child wish to one day seek a career or work in canada. adrimm says on Aug 12, 2007, 13:53: I was registered with the Colombian embassy when I was born (going back a few decades) and I did travel as a young toddler on my mother's passport (Colombian), so that must mean yes.

vicshere says on Aug 12, 2007, 14:16: for Canadian born abroad to Canadian parents it is a bit different...first you have to apply for the citizenship of the child under 18 years of age....after that you then apply for a passport listo 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

john_stark says on Aug 12, 2007, 16:14: I had to fill out some paperwork for my kids and send them a copy of my Canadian birth certificate. They issued certificates of Canadian citizenship which they can use to get a passport as vicshere said. It was all pretty routine and just an excuse to get some money out of us.

vicshere says on Aug 12, 2007, 16:16: exactly john they charge 130,000 for citizenship then 130,000 for passport...I think is called a double whammy...I think once I show my passport and my Canadian citizenship card and my son if less than 18 they should just provide a passport...like our US counterparts..... listo 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
