If we have a child ...born in canada (mother colombian) can this child have dual citizenship.

My wife is colombian and is in canada and has a PR visa.In two years she can apply for canadian citizenship.Im wondering if we have a child which is born in canada if we can also register that child as a colombian citizen...after all the mother is colombian.The child would recieve a canadian birth certificate and automatically be canadian...even while the mother is still considered colombian.Or would the fact that that child was born in canada mean that it would have to go the same route as me (canadian) and all the paper work and b.s. to become a colombian citizen?

Dual citizen. All my kids are dual citizens of the US and Canada even though several of them have never been to Canada.

The following hold Colombian citizenship:

1. Citizens by birth:
a. Native-born Colombians, according to one of these two conditions: that the father or mother should have been natives or Colombian citizens or that, being the offspring of aliens, either of the parents was domiciled in the Republic at the time of birth;
b. The children of a Colombian father or mother who were born abroad and then became domiciled in the Republic.

I took this from the US Embassy website. You have me wondering now too if I could have dual citizenship as my mother was born in Colombia but my father is American. From the way I understand the above, my mother would have had to move back to Colombia with me and then I could have had dual citizenship. Anyone interpret it differently?

Ya ...that would be a concern.My desire is that this child be able live and attend school and one day work and live where it chooses.If my wife and i decide ...as im sure we will..to live in colombia and have the child attend school there,i want the opportunity to come and go freely for this child.Its my desire for this child to know both its colombian family and roots as well as its canadian and to exsperience life in both.What i would not want is problems should the child wish to one day seek a career or work in canada.
thanks all..for the info

My wife and went to the colombian consulate in Boston, brought our marriage cert, our sons birth cert and wifes Colombian passport, filled out paperwork for our sons citizen paperwork (free) and paid for his Colombian passport, pretty painless other than ,waiting for an hour or so.

Canada has birthright, meaning any person born in Canada has a right to citizenship here.

What is meant by: (lencol) ".. but be careful,if your child has dual,and was here with a problem ,then the Canada embassy here would pass it off to the Colombians just like the British embassy does .." ?
NataliaV: I believe you're in category 1a, condition 1: child of a Colombian mother, period. Have you called the consulate/ embassy to ask what paperwork you'd need to get Colombian nationality? I think you can get it...

I was registered with the Colombian embassy when I was born (going back a few decades) and I did travel as a young toddler on my mother's passport (Colombian), so that must mean yes.

I don't know if it can expire or need to be renewed when one comes of age... or how one gets a cedula ... frankly, unless I was thinking of living in Colombia in the future, I don't see it being worth it - and personally I'd rather purse my other ancestry citizenship options (EU).

for Canadian born abroad to Canadian parents it is a bit different...first you have to apply for the citizenship of the child under 18 years of age....after that you then apply for a passport

I had to fill out some paperwork for my kids and send them a copy of my Canadian birth certificate. They issued certificates of Canadian citizenship which they can use to get a passport as vicshere said. It was all pretty routine and just an excuse to get some money out of us.

exactly john they charge 130,000 for citizenship then 130,000 for passport...I think is called a double whammy...I think once I show my passport and my Canadian citizenship card and my son if less than 18 they should just provide a passport...like our US counterparts.....
