If I marry a Colombiana, what is my status in Colombia?

Hi,

Just wondering if I marry a Colombian woman, what is my status in Colombia? Am I a legal immigrant, do I become a citizen or still considered an illegal, what does a marriage grant me in Colombia? I am just curious about this. I believe a few of you PBH'ers have first hand knowlegde? If you can just tell me about your experience, I would be very appreciative. Thanks a lot to my informative and dependable friends on here who always give me good info, advice, recommendations about Colombia. Thanks to Peter too for establishing this web site. Kudos!

I am married to a Colombian, and when I visit Colombia (we don't live there), my status is just that I'm a tourist, that's all. Nothing more is required, so I have not tried to arrange anything more. If we wanted to live in Colombia, I could get the Colombian nationality, or perhaps some other type of status.

I married a Colombiana. While still in the US I found a job in Bogota. I took the letter from the school to the Colombian Consulate in Miami and very easily was given a visa, we were remarried at the Consulate ( seemingly unneccessary--but very important down the road.)
When we were in Bogota my employer assisted me with my first cedula. The cedula had a 2 yr period as did the visa. After 2 renewals cycles I could apply for a resident Visa and the cedula with that. I could have moved toward a citizenship if and only if I renounced my US citizenship. I do not want to do this so I remain a legal resident foriegner. With my first cedula I could open a bank account ,buy a car etc.
For each of the renewals I would have had to present a current proof of marriage from a Notary but with the Consulate MArriage the papers were right there.

I am married to a Colombian, and we currently live in Colombia. Bill Turley told you pretty much how it is. In my situation, I went the Padre de Hija route. It was easier for me and cheaper. I could work with this visa and get a cedula. The visa was a lot cheaper then the marriage one, and it is for 3 years insted of 2.

Thanks people, is it difficult or complex process to obtain a cedula after marriage? Bill, thanks for the info. I thought it might be possible to get a dual citizenship sometime down the road but, apparently, that does not seem possible if you have to renounce US citizenship. Not a big deal, just interesting to know. Legal resident status is probably best if you live there in Colombia. Thanks for your insight.

having lived there near 20 years, monita, no matter what kind of papers you have, you're a foreigner, until those who know you and those who don't, acknowledge you differently, as one of them.
