If Colombians find out you are a gringo will they treat you different?

I am traveling next week to Colombia and I was wondering if a Colombian finds out that I am a New Yorker will they treat me totally different. The reason I ask this question is because I think from the outside it is tough to tell but I really want to get to know people but I am not sure if it is the wrong idea to let people know that you are from the US.. What does everyone think? By the way I am going to Cali and Medellin!!!

njtea5 Well, it will likely vary a bit depending on where you go, who you hang around with and how good your Spanish is, but I don't think that most Colombians will treat you that much differently. They probably won't treat you *exactly* like a Colombian, obviously.

But other than the chance of a taxi driver or two trying to hike up prices, or possibly a slightly higher interest in you from any random robber (or worse, if you're unlucky enough or don't take safety measures, like keeping a low profile), I don't see it making that big of a difference with the general population.

They'll see that you're a foreigner easily enough, and at most may make some random comment about the U.S. and so on, but not much else. That's what I'd say.

njtea5 Of course, people in the market place are out to make a buck and more so yours, if they think you are gringo. But, in general, in mingling with the people, you are going to have an enjoyable time.

I am not flashy, (or pasty.) (other than my Mr.T starter kit) I wear no jewelry whatsoever. Mostly bluejeans and T-shirts. By and large people have always been very, very kind and cordial to me and my second-grade spanish. Only three trips, but so far, it's all been good.

Of course, I am not going to Samaniego, either. Or, Putamayo, or Remolina or La Union.

Just a thought: PBH? it's a tough crowd. You likely won't have to deal with anything in Colombia, like what you might run into here. Although this forum is 'about Colombia', the way this crowd writes and rants and disparages, is nothing representative of the Colombia you likely will experience.

In Colombia, you will generally be dealt with, with lots of respect, as long as you don't go where you shouldn't be. And, I doubt your cousins are going to take you where you shouldn't be. The purpose of your trip is to have fun, right?

In Medellin, nobody really cares if you're a foreigner. I would say about 1 in 30 taxi drivers might ask you where you are from. Even in remote areas and small towns, nobody seems to care. The friendliest Colombians tend to be the ones that used to live in the U.S. They usually walk up and say hello.

Medellin Treated Great...Be there tomorrow night.. Did not see at all any political bashing with Bush..I will be in Medellin for the weekend for another round with my friends.. Met some great friends in Medellin..and also many who use to live in Miami and New York..Get in the party crowd really have a great time.. When they ask where I am from I say Miami and lived there for now 25 years which I have..and won't lie..I would say the worse is Argentina I was treated with stupid looks and remarks..but mostly over our government..and war..They don't like I am American oh well I am what I am...Be yourself unless your an asshole which I have seen some American guys think just because they have a few bucks they can push everybody around..that will not work.. Colombians who I know have respect for themselves and love there city and Country which you should too..taking governments out and politics out.. I love my country United States which I considered lucky and was given many opportunites which many people in this world did not have..The people who can take out politics and government policies and judge you on who you are and not where your from are the ones to hang out with which I have met many awesome colombians who do that..Yes if you go down there just to buy pussy and snort Coca..yes they might judge you in a different way..Go down try to make some friends and go partying you will have a great time.. Stay away from the drugs and hoar houses unless your really horny then not bad to get a quickie but don't make a normal thing.. Trust me colombian guys if they get real estoy calliente they will go to a nice massage/brothel to get a quickie. After meeting new friends you will meet many normal girls..because they are not shy and are very friendly but don't go for the kill right away take it slow and let the colombian woman make the move..Just a hint has been working for me.. Woman are beautiful and hot and will take care of you but watch out they know the game very well..if they know your a American(I like to not use Gringo) and new to colombia some will take advantage of your status..which I am not talking about hanging out with a couple of girls in a nightclub and you buy the drinks which is not bad because you do the same in the States anyways..I am talking about things that go further than that..

Don't lie where your from..Have respect for yourself and others will respect you..

There are two Price Standards In Colombia One for Colombians, One for NorthAmericans or Canadians. Any one who claims diffent has his head buried 2 feet below the sand in the year 2006! WHen it comes to Taxis,Real estate services, professional services(legal, medical ect)or even ordinary services like Laundry or Cleaning services, the prices go up the farther north of the Border you are from. I have observed this even when prices were posted! Otherwise then this Blatant Price Gouging, you are treated well! :)

PS-When you are in the Airport, go to that customer service area and you can a concrete price on the Taxi fare on how much it will cost to exactly where you are going!

Panthdave not sure when I am going down next time as I will be going for some medical procedures I am currently exploring. It will be to Bogota! Thats a ggod idea to leave the price negotiating up to your Colombian friends! Its amazing how much their negotiating can lower a price LOL! Several years ago I let a friend set a price for a Taxi we were catching: I stood off the street out of sight in a Doorway while my Ladyfriend set the price, when she had it set, she waved to me to come and get in the Taxi with her, which I did! I then noticed the taxi driver glaring at me in his rear view mirror! LOL We only went a few hundred yards down the street when he pulled over to the curb, jammed on his brakes and told us to get out! He was so angry he wasn't able to UP the fare on a Gringo he tossed us out of his Taxi! We were doubled over from laughter! LOL

A Few seconds later we caught another Taxi for the Cheap(colombian) rate! Didn't even get tossed out! LOL

Sorry to say but there is no perfect society. however things such as what we are threading about are less likely to happen In the U.S.A (especially in New York where i am now by the way. Long Island to be exact). The fact remains that there are so many different people living together living apart speaking Spanish, Italian, Chinese and so forth and regul.ations against discrimination of any sort that people try not to discriminate even when they want to because there is a price to pay. We all know as the saying goes that in the U.S. you can indict a ham sandwich. Any regulations like that in other countries like Colombia go unenforced. thats why i 10 year old can by a bottle of rum if he says its for his father or cigarettes or any other thing. he/she doesn't even have to say it's for his father. Mike's being nice, I count as many as 5 different prices 1. Lowest price is for family.
2. Next lowest is for close friends and business associates.
3. Next best is for Colombians in general.
4. Next to the highest is for foreigners.
5. The skys the limit highest price is "reserved" exclusively for Gringos and folks from Canada.

I'm not complaining, because I usually have a good sense for value and I enjoy the give and take in bargaining.

You are spot on! I have my ladyfriend do all my Neogotiating and only get involved after the price is set if I do at all! Currently I am looking at needing some Medical Procedures and here's an example of the 2 Tier pricing you mention. When I called several months and spoke to the Bogota Doctor involved, I received what I thought appeared to be a fair price, Reletive to US Prices. Then I asked my Ladyfriend to personally visit the Same Doc and get a price for her "Brother" who would be traveling to Col for the procedure. She being a Doctor herself, can't be fooled! What a shock, it was several $100 cheaper like $600. What you say then is True as far as family receiving the Best and Lowest Price. This was Proof, plain as day! This was one of the few times I let my guard down, assuming the Two Tier pricing wasn't structured into the Medical Community. How Wrong I was! By several Hundreds of Dollars! She is constantly amazed when she visits here in the US where the prices are as marked for everybody with no price change due to nationality,,,,

I do think you're treated differently. If youre in Cartagena chances are anything you buy will be at least twice as expensive as it is for locals. If you go to Medellin, and this is a true story, being a gringo makes you more desirable for girls. I met this one guy there -from medellin- who had lived in the states, pretty decent English and went clubbing with his gringo pals, when girls saw him speaking Spanish and stuff they wouldn't want him anymore so he started telling them he was american and always picked up girls...go figure, and he was the better looking one...In bogota, I wouldnt know, been here for too long now to give an unbias account...

I went to a couple of different medical centres in Bogota. You register at the reception and then they call out your name a bit later. To all the Colombians, the reception called out their regular name, Andres Gomez or whatever. For me, they called out "Don Peter".

Now, I am not especially old or distinguished, so I am not sure why I got that courtesy and others like older guys in suits, mature women etc did not get called the same way? Oh yeah, maybe because I was the only extranjero in the room!

I heard in Villavicencio, you can go to a whiskeria, and get a friend for the evening for 20.000 pesos. I don't know if that is accurate, or if there is a different price for gringos, but that seems pretty cheap to me. I heard you just go in, you make friends with one, and then pay an extra bar tab. Then, they take you to their apartment - which is on the property. Does this sound accurate?

each pig has a different price cobrar segun el marrano (charge according to the pig) is a time-honoured Colombian custom. Large, pink pigs are the most expensive, because they a) don't know enough Spanish to haggle b)don't know the prices or c) (the best reason of them all) can be bled through the nose.

A multi-tier price system exists and is thriving in all Colombian cities. It's not created just to bleed the gringos, though. People in poorer barrios pay less for EVERYTHING, including their food at the corner market. I'm sure this is not unique to Colombia, though.

My upper middle class aunt puts a glass of holy water on top of a picture of a gringo (looks just like morphus) and places it under my beautiful light skin prima’s (cousin) bed , is suppose to attract potential suitors from overseas. At the other end (feet) she’s got a tiny dark Indian looking doll (looks like me) with a long needle shoved between the eyes, is meant to ward off guys like me, just as lovely Kat described. The odd thing, this very pretty blanquita prima of mine was crazy about me, but we were never left alone in the house cuz they knew if given a chance I would porked the crap outta her and made her squeal like a pig. And since my entire family knows I had sex with burras, they didn’t want me anywhere near her, nevermind screw her.

How about being married to your own aunt? One of my wife's dead husband's brothers is married to his aunt. You can basically do anything in Colombia.

Just lower and middle Colombian class are able to eat all the rubish coming from Yankies. Just estrato 5 & 6 look at them as normal joes who come to Colombia to have some fun. Colombian have a little bit of more respect for people coming from Europe, this is because they do not talk so much rubish, do not like showing off, and are highly inteligents and educated!.

"5. The skys the limit highest price is "reserved" exclusively for Gringos and folks from Canada."

In Colombia gringos include Canadians, Europeans, Italians, Australians, etc... It's actually easier to say who's not a gringo. If you are Indian or Asian(Chino) or from Latin America you're not a gringo in the eyes of the Colombian. Everywhere else is pretty much gringolandia.

I'm constantly with locals (Estrato 2) and they handle all the prices. I think the fascination with gringos is with the higher class (read: more materialistic) people. In my experience, los pobres really don't give a crap about gringos - in other words they are not starry eyed and enamored - they're pretty indifferent actually. Even in the tourist areas of Medellín.

Id have to agree with Juanp, I have seen it a lot of times when I go clubbing and when I go to bars with friends and you find Americans partying with girls that wouldn't be there otherwise, because its obvious that they are "lobas", and so the gringo is made fun of all the time, because he cant even pull a classy chica...I have seen it, I have heard it and I know its true. At uni, people make fun of international students because "If you see the loba in estrato 6, chances are she's banging a stupid gringo"... or an old man...or an old gringo. I think thats a very widespread perception amongst young people in the higher stratos...

Sounds like the gringo is lucky he can't pull one of these classy chicas.

Much like outside Colombia, inside the ones that think they are the shit...really are the shit too. Where's my loba?

Maybe that is because "los pobres really don't give a crap about gringos - in other words they are not starry eyed and enamored - they're pretty indifferent actually."

Maybe that is because their self-image is a bit lower and they think a gringo is a person they can not have a relationship with, so why show any interest? Or in other words, maybe the difference in class or estata, is that some see it as potential, and others in lower estatas might feel intimidated by a gringo.

There are jerks any where you go in the world including Colombia but I have never had a problem with the population. In fact i think Colombians for the most part are much friendlier than Americans.

I gotta agree, with whome limited in my travels so far, only three trips to Colombia, but all "the people I came in contact with always treated me very politely...I think Colombians for the most part are ... friendlier than Americans."
With the exception of Acadiana... I think it (Acadiana) is the last place on earth, where even if you are a stanger, and ride through any neighborhood, three people, if not just about everyone you see is going to be waving at your ass like they know you.
