I Won’t Go To That Mine

Puerto Tejada is a muddy, sad little village of Black Colombians just outside of Jamundí, on the Cauca River, not far from Cali in the province of the Valle del Cauca. No foreigners go there, there’s nothing to see there. Yet, this sleepy hamlet has given Colombia two of the most extraordinary musical talents whose contributions to the popular music of Colombia won’t easily be surpassed by any others: Piper Pimienta and Leonor Gonzalez Mina, La Negra Grande de Colombia, Colombia’s first internationally acclaimed artist.

The haunting tunes of “A La Mina”, an old song of black slaves in Colombia is the one I carry on my eardrums and my soul as being the most representative and poignant of the Colombian popular culture.

We went to Puerto Tejada sometimes early Saturday mornings to buy produce at the local market. There's nothing to see there. What a great talent that came out of that little village.
