i tried that most popular of colombian exports for the first time yesterday

and I did not like it one bit. It made me talkative and gave me energy, but I felt no happiness or euphoria or anything that would make me want to repeat the experience. I feel relieved in some ways, because I know that I will never become an addict. the person i purchased it from was recommended to me by a friend who knows his stuff, so I imagine the quality and potency were high. All in all, an interesting experience that I don't plan on repeating. I can't imagine that wars for fought and people died for this crappy stuff. No joke, i prefer a good ice cream or piece of pie any day of the week!!!!!!

Hola Mongo!

"Darloup, you don't need links.....you're French.

One thing about the French; they know about good food, good wine, and I'm sure, good coffee!"

Not easy for us Frenchies to assume this unfair burden!

As far are links are concerned: As you know, any BIG MOUTH on this forum can pretend to be an authority on ANY subject... Thus, if I post something which has been contested in a thread, I like to give my sources of references....

This is why I insist that Colombia coffee is STILL considered by most experts as being one of the best in the world. If you don't agree (which is your right - please don't take it up with me).

"Good food" - true, although I'd argue that Italian food (at it's best) can be better...

"Good wine" - also true although we don't have a monopoly any longer. The Australians and the New Zealanders are doing a mean Chardonnay. The chileans and the Californians are doing excellent reds... Although, to this day, the Burgundy wines have not been equalled...

And of couse, we still have the champagne, the foie gras, the cheeses, the perfumes, the fashion shows and, naturally, the French women (oh la la Gay Paree!!!! - Personally, I'll exchange, any day, a French woman for a Colombiana- but then, I'm being subjective! ;-) )

Better to have tried and failed than having regrets all your life about what you MIGHT have missed

From Wikie

"Colombian coffee, also known as Colombian Mild, is characterized by its soft terroir. Only crops of Coffea arabica of Maragogype, Caturra, Typica and Bourbon cultivars, among others, are grown. When Colombian coffee is freshly roasted it has a bright acidity, is heavy in body and is intensely aromatic."

I agree, I've never seen anything, but Arabica, maybe La Huella has seen Robusto plants at all the coffee fincas he's been to?

It used to be the case, as Colombia back in the day never really had a coffee culture and colombians were happy enough drinking "pasilla", but now with JV and other coffee shops opening up all over the place, they are starting to retain some of the premium coffee for domestic comsumption, but I would guess the the great majority of the good stuff still makes its way abroad.

I hear you darloup, but it is understandable from their (the growers and exporters) point of view, because colombians didn't care and more importantly, were not willing to pay for premium coffee, but now the worm is turning.

The same thing occurs in Machala, Ecuador. All the best banannas go to the USA.

Of course, hundreds of them drop into the streets, out of the backs of the dump trucks that carry them through the city. So the locals do get some of them, although still green and slightly bruised....

Yes Darloup, it is ashame. But it is changing, i had a coffee in this place called "cafe portofino", on la novena in Granada, Cali, it was owned by a colombian couple that had spent time in France and Italy(countries that have real coffee culture) and were ashamed that colombia, as we have mentioned, doesn't keep the best coffee for itself, so they learned every aspect of the coffee business and found the best gourmet coffee producers in Colombia, and beleive me, it is some of the best coffee you have ever tasted. Unfortunately, it is the exeption and not the rule.

Here (SF calif) it is about $10 USD for a pound of premuim ground coffee. How many grams in a pound? I heard that for every cup of coffee from Starbucks, which they get $1.65 for a drip, the grower only gets 7 cents, it is a crime.

billyb says on Nov 29, 2008, 23:26:

I know, I don't know what Huella was talking about with Robusta, no self respecting coffee grower in Colombia would grow Robusta, that is what they grow in the flatlands of Vietnam, which just passed up Colombia as the second producer after Brazil. The trend right now in Colombia is not to compete in quantity with garbage producers like vietnam and to a lesser extent Brazil, but to focus on quality and specialty coffees that although you get a lower yield (generally a good sign of quality), they make it up by commanding a premium price.

Hey darloup, have you heard of that coffe from Indonesia? I can't recall which Island, i believ it is Borneo, and it is cofffe that Civets eat and "pass through" their system whole, well the whole "process" gives the beans an arome and taste that, for a better term, is unique, and it sells for about $27 a pound.
