I know we hear so many bad stories about Colombia, and I am sure a percentage of them do happen.
I live in Sydney,Australia and have been to Cali several times and I personally think,Cali is safer than Sydney,I know I don't hear of the crime in Cali or have seen it,but everyday here I read of all the crime that happens in Sydney, and it is just getting worse, and this has made me consider moving to Cali.
Over the last few years there has been so many gang rapes here, that they had to change the laws to make the penalty more severe, also there is so much gun voilence.
I hate to generalise but most of this crime I hear of here comes down to the Lebanese or Arabics gangs who have no respect for the law.
Do you think because it is so common to see police, army ,etc in Colombia with machine guns, etc ,that this makes people respect the law more in Colombia?

litost says on Sep 30, 2004, 05:33: No, I wish what you were saying was true but there is no way Cali or any part of Colombia is safer than Australia. If there isn't more coverage of crimes such as rape and gang violence, it's not because it doesn't exist, rather because all the headlines are taken up by guerrilla, paramilitary or narco violence.

elmodefoque says on Sep 30, 2004, 05:50: I know very little about Cali, I probably would have a hard time finding it on a Colombia map, but I did see a report a few months back in “Telemundo” in a program called “En Rojo Vivo” They showed gangs of young thugs standing on both side of a street like a gauntlet ready to steal the bicycle or motorcycle of every guy that passed by. They’ll chase them down with sticks, rocks, and when closed enough, if that guy resisted, stabbed the poor bastard, all in broad daylight with many people around, and those people did not seemed one bit alarmed like it was business as usual. I got to admit there were a number of guys that got stabbed but continued to struggle but the fight was so lopsided the guys will just surround him like a pack of hyenas after a wounded prey and beat the crap outta him and take his bike. I’m sure the places you hang at, is way on the other side of town so you don’t see stuff like that, but to say Sydney is safer than Cali, is a just a tiny, minuscule silly even with those monstrous Arabs. My father is Arab, and you’re right he also had no respect for the laws, he was a thieving, conniving tough guy and I thank his Allah for that , (I don’t believe in nothing) cause like he says’ I needed to do anything to get my little, crazy, donkey loving, filthy little boy Uruak (me) outta the hell we were living called Colombia. I'll get there, when I get there! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

I was tempted to stopped by and tell him how much I love his upper, rulings, Colombian class. I'll get there, when I get there! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Elbigie says on Sep 30, 2004, 06:18: Cali safer than Sydney….. no way Panday!!!. I lived in Sydney for nearly 9 years and I lived in Col. for 28 years and I can assure that Sydney is a paradise compared with Cali or for that matter most Colombian major Cities (safety wise). Generalisations are dangerous as I have also heard of gang rapes perpetrated by White Anglo-Saxons in OZ. Let's not forget the Anita Cobie case in Sydney.

sydneygirl says on Sep 30, 2004, 08:11: its just that u don´t hear about it..not that it doesn´t happe I agree that sydney can be dodgy, like those two 16 yr old girls that were gang raped out in the suburbs by those Lebenese boys.Oh and those gangs that send a new guy to hide in your back seat while you go and pay for your petrol and then stick a knife to your throat and make you drive to where the whole gang is waiting to take their turn with you.

ColombnAngel86 says on Sep 30, 2004, 12:12: sorry but you guys are exagerating a bit I live in cali and i love it. I am american born and decided to come to live here 2 months ago. I always came on vacation to cali ever since i was a little girl and i never saw anything. I havent seen anything while living here nor i have been through anything. Yes bad things do happen but it all depends where you go and what you do. Come on you cant tell me that if you go to the worst part of NY you wont get robbed cuz guess what i lived in NY and i went once to a bad part and i got robbed. There are bad things happening everywhere in the world so everyone shouldnt just judge Colombia. If you just live your life here and stay out of danger then nothing will happen. Of course you cant walk around alone at night here but then again will you do that in any other part of the world? Plus the bad things here happen in the really poor , lower class towns so it all depends where you go to live. Crazyforcolombia if you feel that you arent happy in sydeny and you want to come to cali then you should. Its where you feel safe so think about it and if your unhappy then go to where you want to go ...wherever it is. Dont be afraid to come here if its what you want. Take care.

caslug says on Sep 30, 2004, 12:29: safe is safe Like many first timer in COL, I started out very paranoid(first 24 hrs), then realize that if I stay in "safe areas" then they're just a safe as Sydney, LA, SF, NYC, etc., The trick is to know where they are and don't stray from them. If you have a local friend, they'll know much more "safe areas" than just the tourist areas. However, I would say that Sydney, LA, SF, NYC has more safe areas than Cali. Poverty and crime usually go hand-in-hand, and Cali has alot more of it than Sydney.

But I have lived in Sydney my whole life and have never in anyway been mugged, raped or even threatened.. sorry. But I think you are taking small incidents and creating a larger problem.
