I Smell A Rat

Being a single male travelling to Cali in six weeks, I've read with great interest and amusement Calipro's impassioned defense of the "Gringos Dating Caleñas Phenomenon". So I decided to check out a web site he recommended in the "This board is geting too partisan" thread (www.allcolombiangirls.com). Well I can't say that I really expected much, but I think it's fair to say that something is rotten in the state of Cali. To even get a phone number you've got to cough up $150.00 and of course the rates go up from there. I know it's business, but it seems like just another racket to me (It' too bad though... some of them are real beauties). I just hope he's right about the situation in general...

IF you really want to meet some lovely ladies Join Amigos.com or Matchlatino, and seek them out there. Try being honest, and say that you are looking for penpals and friends, and someone to be a guide/friend while you are visiting.

That is how I met my wife to be. We met as friends first, and she knew I had planned to travel to other places as well (never made it). The women there arent dumb. But you will meet exactly who you deserve, if your intentions arent honest.

peace out.

I smell a rat also...... Where do you get the $150 for a phone number?

For $450 you can get a yearly membership and meet every woman in the agency if you have time and that is the best deal in Cali bar done.

As far as my impassioned defense of the "Gringos Dating Caleñas Phenomenon", I have to tell you that I don't believe your Cali experiance will be anything like mine but then again I don't know how it could be. I have been traveling regularly to Cali for over ten years.

I'll be taking a guy down to Cali March 10th. He doesn't want to even date the women. He just wants to take pictures of them. It takes all kinds I guess.

What are you looking for? Better yet if I gave you a phone number for free what would you say to the woman?

I don´t see anything wrong with that biz I agree with both of you. Everything depends on what you are looking for. Like I said in my post, both part is using each other. And it don´t necesary have to be a bad thing.
Calipro, if you have a number or email to much, send it over man, :-)

albatross, why don't you.. joing a internet dating site as issac suggested. Put you profile up, w/ pics and send email out. It's a lot cheaper than paying $450/yr for memebersip. Or you can do what some guys do with great succcess, go to cali, hang out in public places and talk english to someone or on the mobile. You'll be suprise at how many smile you'll get.

But since CP is giving you numbers for free, just get it from him. At least you know from his pics his taste in women is OK. YOu can date em AND take pics! Make sure to post it like CP, for the rest of us guys that can't make it to Cali yet. LOL. BTW, unless your spanish is decent, it'll be difficult to hook up.

Yeah, Caslug and Isaac are right. You just sing in in those sites for penpal or saying clearly that you look for a guide in your visit to Cali.If you are looking for more than hot days in good company or are considering honest friendship/before choose the girl(s) you liked more:

Pay attention:
1. What kind of pictures she is able to send you (almost nacked? ); with family?

2. If your spanish is not enough for a understandable conversation, try to contact someone bilingüal girl as possible.

3. Try to have her family phone and office phone as possible

4. Is the girl talking about some former boyfriend often? (She probably did not break with him and are still in love, so you can forget about her)

5. Does she knows most salsa night clubes here? She probably dated very often and drinks with company...

oh..I got to go...

Albatross You need to appreciate the fact that they are running a "for profit" business which doesn't make them pimps. They shouldn't expect an Albatross around their neck expecting everything for nothing. Recently there was a poster (gringo) visiting Medellin complaining about the difficulty in meeting women when he could have invested US$100 with an introduction service and been personally introduced to 10 women of his choice (picking from several hundred).

You can join amigos.com but you need to realize that a solid 15-20% of the great looking women are looking for other women (not men), and of the remainder they are looking primarily for hispanic men. The women on that site are not just parked there waiting for a gringo to email them a message in english (or spanish).

At least the introduction services bring women that want to meet gringos together with the target of their interest. Many will debate the quality of the different processes and women but I for one think it makes no difference if you are a good judge of character.

I don't mind smelling a rat once in awhile as part of my defenses but I just don't want to taste one. jajajaja

As I have said before in posts, knowing what I know now I would never look for a Colombian woman that didn't have a USA tourist visa, totally fluent in english and educated in a english speaking university. Having said that, the chances of those women having any interest in me is slim to none. Anyway, too late for me to employ that wisdom.

As you will learn the greatest problem is not meeting women in Colombia but rather what to do after you have met the one you can't live without. Bridging the cutural and language divide is easier said than done.

Take a closer look at that brown eyed black haired girl or woman you met last week that speaks spanish and english living in your country as the chances of a relationship with her succeeding are better than someone from a different culture and language. It's like opening a restaurant nine out of ten of them fail or you wish you hadn't opened them in the first place.

Lost in space... The $150 is for a personal listing. The agency advertises "you" so women can write you first. It also comes with six e-mail addresses of women from the agency.

Personally I don't reccmmend the service. The women that would write a complete sranger aren't exactly what I would call the cream of the crop. But, if you have a fear of rejection, it's an option.

"Anyway, it's not about the money... I just don't like pimps."

That's Ok. I don't like whores.

Frustrated Gringo I'm an Airframe Engineer. And I know you can't expect something for nothing... I certainly don't work for free. Maybe I'm overreacting slightly, I'm just tired of being treated like a stupid Gringo - last August in the Dominican Republic, a taxi driver charged me TEN TIMES the normal rate to take me to the emergency room, but I was bleeding like a stuck pig so what could I do...?

I know that the word "pimp" is less than perfect, but it's not too far off either. But I suppose the truth is that if I thought there was a decent chance of meeting someone special, I'd go ahead and pay the "agency".

Calipro, since you did in fact mention this site to illustrate "two real life examples", I assumed that you were tacitly recommending it. (And yea, $150 for 6 addresses... thats what I said.. so whats with the "Lost In Space"...?)

Albatross Being treated like a stupid gringo goes with the territory when you are exisiting outside your element. Just grin, bear it and more importantly learn from it. It makes you stronger and smarter as you move forward. Anything that doesn't kill you will make your stronger.

I once took the ex-wife of a pro basketball player (high maintenance) out to dinner in Seattle and the bill (including tip) was $580. From then on I learned to control the wine list as some bottles of wine can cost $180 each (or more). The next time we went to dinner and the wine steward started to hand her the wine list I told him that he better give the wine list to me or I would break every bone in his body. We then proceeded to discover the quality of $40 bottles of wine. jajaja

You wouldn't think twice about taking a woman to dinner in the USA and spending $100 (or more) but we hesitate at spending the same amount to meet 10 women in person that have no material or financial expectations from that meeting other than meeting you. People will take issue with this post but (in my experience) I have never seen any difference in quality (inside and outside) between women frequenting the introduction services to meet a gringo and the websites like amigos.com or someone casually introduced to me. I have met dozens from both and they are the same only the introduction services focuses their interest directly to the foreign men. Writing an email to an amigos.com woman will more than likely not even get a response unless you live in their country and speak their language.

I feel like I'm beating this into the ground.... The $150 is for a personal listing. You know advertising your personal data and contact information so women can write you first. The 6 addresses are just an added bonus.

I do recommend joining allcolombiangirls. It is actually the most economical and best agency in Cali, IMHO. I just don't recommend the personal listing unless you can't just pick out women you would like to meet from the agency profiles without fear of rejection. With the personal listing, women contact you first. You know women that don't have anything better to do then contact a perfect stranger in hopes of some how developing a serious relationship. The whole thing just sounds scary to me.

... Well, thanks to all for the advise... and I liked the wine anecdote, Viewpoint; It reminded me of a similar occurance in Budapest a few years ago. After two drinks with a lady, I was presented with a $200 bill (about $50 for a bad gin & tonic). I protested to the goon squad running the place and ended up paying only about $150. I read later that the Hungarian Government had begun to crack down on these tourist traps; apparently some tourists actually had gotten beaten up when they resisted paying... not exactly the best thing for tourism.

In Retrospect, "I Smell A Rat" probably wasn't really the best way to begin this forum...

Come-on, the girls get free/fun night out on the town, the old dude, gets fun time, and walter makes some dinero, heck even the clubs & restaurant are making money. So who loose in this exchange? And if some true love comes out of it, that's a bonus. You gotta meet people someone, they certainly don't just show up at your door. Of course maybe Walter offer that as a service. LOL!

In the US, they have a service like this. There was a story about this company that provides you with a "wingman/wingwomen" for a fee. That person goes with you to a event, talks to women/guys you you like, then introduces you to them. No one in the US, even bat an eyebrow over this new service.

Really, what the hell difference does it make. In fact marrying on line is even better. If things don't work out within a short period of time, he can just send her back to Colombia and not be financialy liable for a thing. So there

Most of these girls (now I'm going to be hit hard) look like the girls who used to work in my kitchen. Nothing's basically wrong with that; I used to have some fairly attractive maids, especially on Sunday mornings when they dressed up to go meet their friends on their day off. online dating I really don't understand what the big issue is. Do a search for dating services/agencies and you will see that there are more online dating services and agencies in the USA than in all Latin America together. Plenty of gringas and gringos there looking for their dreampartners. You get videos, webcam conferences, and more, for just a few bucks per year, with or without matchmakers.

So why shouldn't Colombians and Colombianas also use the internet or agencies to find a potential partner? Be careful when you throw rocks when you sit in a glass house.
