I PROTEST!!!

PBH is strict enough as it is.it should be a group decision to hire a female moderator.thats the way Peter would do it.i believe if a female moderator is hired PBH will end up losing many of its male members at the cost of a few females.is that what webmanco wants??or is it that webmanco wants a higher female turnout at his meetups??PBH has ALWAYS been most popular with the MEN.And i believe PBH should continue catering to the MEN.Especially the MEN that travel to Colombia looking for fun, adventure, love ect.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Nov 28, 2006, 23:56:

arthur, there's no democracy on internet forums. It's the owner who decides, not even the moderators have much to say about general policy questions. The question of the female moderator has been discussed long now, a couple of years ago there were three mods at PBH, Tinto, lionheart and I forget the handle, a Colombian lady for the Spanish Only section which is this one and this whole thread is placed in a wrong forum. Anyway, lionheart and mariangela, yes, that was her name I think dropped out long ago leaving tinto as the lone ranger there.

Arthur, PBH was NEVER intended to be a forum that caters mostly to men. That I know for sure. Colombian Blog grows like a mushroom after rain, flourishing and with interesting topics galore, in spite of having a whole bunch of female moderators, I think we're just as many as the male mods there. While PBH languished in the raunch culture CB moved on, tapping on the community spirit and friendly atmosphere there. Nobody wants to change PBH into anything it wasn't before, only get it back on the original track.

BTW, Arthur, nice little backstabbing work there with your mention on ColombiaExperts.

Cheers,
Desi

Hope this thread gets moved to Friendly Talkzone.

Stop the Censorship Who cares about having a women moderator, that would be fine and having more women on here would be great as well, it is needed. I just wish there was less censorship and deletion of threads that may not be deemed as "politically correct" by an overly conservative moderator, understanding of course the owner has a say as well. Maybe there needs to be a "free for all" or "boys club" forum in the blog where everyone can just let it rip. Let's face it, most interest in Colombia seems to be by men and centers around women. I think most of men’s interest in anything eventually returns to interest in women. So you are fighting human nature, male human nature anyway. That is my two cents worth anyway.

litost says on Nov 29, 2006, 06:34:

As a man I can understand the natural interest of male visitors to this site to talk about colombian women, but at the same time I share some people's concern over the direction this site has taken and how it's strayed away from Peter's original intentions. I personally come to this site to share opinions on general aspects of life in Colombia, its image in the world, and to give travel advice when I feel qualified to do so. That ideally would be the overall tone of the site, but PBH doesn't belong to me and the facts show that a majority of people who come to this site is to talk about colombianas and their relationships. So what I suggest (like I did a long time ago when I saw where this was going), and I hope it is seriously considered this time, is for the creation of a "relationships and gender" forum specifically for all these types of conversations. That way the cigar smoking crowd would have their corner to talk all they want (ok, with some limits like no looking for prostitution or other obvious stuff), and the rest of the friendly talk zone could genuinely become faithful to its name.

Any takers?

Peter Great idea about travel guides, looking forward to that! Have you considered taking the Friendly Talkzone posts off the front page, just like Politics and War, and instead putting in a section or two with more specific subjects like Travel?

That would go a long way in improving the quality of the content and the overall tone like litost mentioned and steering the site to its original direction. And I think it would encourage more people to write travel articles, I know it would definitely make me think about writing again.

Of course the choice of moderators is also crucial. Right now the forum contents may be far from ideal, but a whole lot better than it was a few years ago when it was totally unmoderated.

And by the way here's how the site looked in 2000, and in 1999 when I first found it a few months before my first trip to Colombia:
http://www.poorbuthappy.com/ease/howpeoplewatch/colombia/
There was a Travel section back then, why not now?

People who want to talk travel can do that on one thread, and those who want to talk girls or guys or gays or whatever can do that on another, etc....but you 'guys' don't like being excluded from our boys talk, that's the problem.

Anyway, I'm just joking, personally I always preferred having girls in my treehouse. I started young.

BTW kat I bet I am one of the most 'liberated' men here. I wish we had about 100 more Margaret Thatchers in the world, just for example.

But I am impressed with the work ethic of all colombians, they put me to shame. If colombia ever gets the political situation sorted out, look out world.

I am serious about perhaps importing some colombians to work with me here. Of course, they will have to be gorgeous. I might have to hire one of those male model guys you guys posted photos of a while back too, to attract the female crowd, or more likely the gay crowd.lol

Here it's like they are doing you a favour to serve you, the attitude is unbelievable. I can only surmise they either blame gringos for their economic mismanagement or they just have not gotten used to the fall they experienced since 2001.

But it all depends, right now I am employing a bunch of construction guys from the north (chaco) and man do they work hard for $10 a day (!) But the absentee rate is pretty high.

quite easy to spot that way It is helpful to know the ip's of the spamers but to ban them it is not the solution, if any of them want to join again they would do it from another computer with different IP address.

Besides if the culprit is loggin in from a dynamic IP address computer, chances are that when they unplug the modem and plug it again they will get a different ip address.

If the ip gets banned there would be "justos pagando por pecadores".
And the forums getting less visitors.

"And even if you are on dynamic IP the first two numbers are always going to be the same, so you're still quite easy to spot that way."

There are a lot combination of numbers and if you stick to the first two numbers, administrators could ban someone else's ip.

Crazy4Cali says on Dec 1, 2006, 12:36:

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics It's hard to tell which threads are most popular just by looking at the topic index.

The threads are ranked by most recent posting, not most recent access. It's possible that some threads are (or would be) read often but not commented on. Informational threads fall into that category, for example. If I post something that says "Here's my list of favorite hotels and resturants" someone might chime in with some more or comment on my lack of taste, but after that, what else can you say (without starting talk about how hot the Colombian women are or how stupid the grigos are...). Nevertheless, a post like that might get viewed a lot by people who are planning a visit but have nothing to add.

The controversial and entertaining postings, on the other hand, spark a lively and sometimes heated exchange but rarely contain any real information that a travel might find interesting to read. Nevertheless, these posts remain quite visible because of how the topics are presented. So it can give the mistaken perception that they are "hogging" the site. In fact (and only Peter could know for sure) they may get viewed much less than the more informational threads.

All I'm saying is that you can't judge a thread's "reading" popularity from the topic menu. You can really only judge how controversial it is.

Gomezman5 says on Dec 1, 2006, 22:05:

My turn......webmanco......Desi Arthur Brode made a statement...

I have been sitting here for three days waiting for this thread to play out. You guys are something else. The ladies get all defensive. Webmancos takes quotes and posts them out of context. Hey, if you aspire to be a parrot webmanco, maybe you will be lucky enough to be one yourself in your next life.

As to Arthur Brode's statement itself, I think a lot of men agree in principle. He, myself included, are tired of the double standard, and hair splitting all in the name of political correctness.

And Desi, your appealing to the fact this is Peter's web site and therefore he as the owner can do as he wishes, is just an indirect way of your appealing to the status quo. Call it what it is. Peter has ALWAYS listened to requests that are made by this forum's participants and he always, from time to time ask's direct questions by starting a thread or in the form of a poll. From what realm to you come from Desi, thinking that all of a sudden, if a group of people here want to see a change in direction, that Peter is just going to turn a deaf ear to any such requests made by the forums participants? Obviously you don't know the same Peter that I do. So Desi are you saying that Peter is only interested in making change when he sets the wheels in motion, and that he would never consider any changes started by forum participants? Also Desi........don't by hypocrtical. When someone suggested that the forum have a woman moderator, instead of favoring it, why didn't you say that this is Peter's forum and it is his decision back then? I know why. It is suggestion that you favor. However when other members of the forums suggest a change that you don't favor, you start beating the drum that expouses that we don't have the right to request change because it is Peter's forum....double standard, double standard, double standard. Can't have it both ways my friend
