I don't see why she can be a Colombian looking for info about Liverpool, like many Colombians here look for info about the USA

BTW I have been in Liverpool but dunno much about apart that the Beatles are from there jejeje

Yeah, the Beatles are from Liverpool so you need to check out Mathew Street the site of the Cavern Club where they first made their name but there are other things to do.

Liverpool will be European Capital of Culture in 2008 and has many cultural buildings to see. The problem at the moment is that a lot of the city looks like a building site and rumours have it that a lot of the new build will not be complete in time for Capital of Culture and that the residents fear being hit with a whopping council tax increase to fund this.

Luckily I live down the road from Liverpool and am not classed as "liverpool" so my council tax will not be affected. I'm not a scouser (inhabitant of Liverpool) either, which has some benefits - you will probably hear about the scouse reputation when you are here - but Scousers are great people really, very friendly and the stereotypes are unfair. although tracksuits, shell suits and perms are still in fashion ;)

There are things to see here, great nightlife and food.

I suppose the info you are looking for will depend on what you are doing here. Work, visiting family/friends or studying? It is a great city to be a student.

If you hook up with a colombian community here, let me know, so I can get some tips on finding cheap flights to Colombia from travel agencies.

I lived for years between Liverpool and Manchester.
The contrast between them is amazing IMHO
Be glad to share my subjective impressions

Maybe you should try and English forum. Or maybe even a forum about Liverpool, you will probably have more luck there.

Because of it being on the Irish Sea, I heard that almost half the people there are Irish. It is a rough working class town[think soccer hooligans]. It's gotta be cool if the Beatles grew up there.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

gringolondinense says on Sep 7, 2007, 04:10:

Yes christo, the people there are mostly from ireland. Its also full of abortion clinics as its the nearest place those ladies can get one legally. The people there have the worst accent out of all english speaking people in the world. To blend in, just add the word like to any sentence...

"Ay wots the time like?" means what time is it.
"Wot u fooking looking at like" means would you like a fight

The first time I visited Liverpool, I was about 6 years old. I was on a boat floating across the Mersey river. Some guy was chasing me around..it was a big 3 deck boat. I remember I couldnt find my friends lol. They guy kept saying "Du wanna sweet?". nice.

Yes, its home to the beatles and all the streets are there like strawberry fields, but its probably not worth seeing now. Its really not cool....go somwhere else if I were u.

It's a bleak and savage place.

Genuine tales of cannibalism have been reported of its ill-favoured, troglodyte inhabitants.

Actually, having trashed the entire population of Liverpool in this post, they can actually be nice and friendly people. Just hang on to your wallet.

Actually, I once stayed with a guy from Liverpool. He never bought shampoo, soap, conditioner or shower gel. He had a whole cupboard full of those little bottles you can nick from hotel bathrooms.

All of his stuff had those pseudo-posh names like "Saville and Hawksbury Luxury Bath Gel" or "Tofberts and Sawters Vanilla and Fudge. Pour Homme".

"A rough working class town".......for your information, it was very deprived after the docks closed down but now the city has diversed into many different sectors. There are a lot of so called "scallies" in Liverpool, but all the people that I know and have met are friendly, sociable and just want to have a good time. Just like anyway in the Uk, there are plenty of people who get tanked up and look to pick a fight.

To say the place is full of Hooligans is a little harsh. Go and see for yourself!!!!

ingles says on Sep 7, 2007, 09:18:

Curramberochris - well said, exactly what i thought. The city was a hole when the recessions kicked in but it is a pleasant place now with the docks having undergone a major transformation.

Every city has problems and scally culture is no means confined to Liverpool - it seems to be everywhere in the UK now as we have created a culture of "rights" and failed to highlighted that everybody has responsibilities as well.

City centre is fine and a fantastic night out. As far as I'm concerned the city centre is as safe as houses, although there are suburbs to avoid - Norris Green having been highlighted in the media recently due to youth gang culture.

Don't believe the doom mongers - it's a pleasant city. As a posted above, if the reasons of your visit are clarified, better advice can be provided.

Lulita, if you are looking for an exciting vibrant city then you will do well to find a place better than Liverpool. The people in general are so friendly.....(much more than down south) and a girl arrivng there from Colombia will generate lots of interest!
I have taken friends from the home counties (near London) to Liverpool and they had the best nights ever........I also have met a few Colombianos in Liverpool and they love it too, just takes a while to pick up the accent!
Enjoy

Yeah right "says it all really."

Lulita, you will have noticed that in a post above, I specifically mentioned this suburb as a place to avoid.

The article is the equivalent of a Brit asking what is it like in Cali? And then being directed to articles about Aguablanca

Fun place! Does definetely have a rougher edge so be careful but also plenty of nice pubs and attractions if you have some dinero. There's a really cool ped mall too with all the nice shops etc.

Does look like it could be depressing for long term say though. Think Morissey or The Smiths depressing. Pretty sure they filmed that one video on a sunny day in 1983 at Merseyside even though they were from Manchester (1 hour by train). Manchester also definetely worth a visit.

The thing that really amazed me and helped me learn my heritage a little more was all the vacant and dilapidated buildings in some parts of the city. Family from western Pennsyslvania and many of the towns named after towns in England and the Architecture and decay very similar also. Both vibant industrial areas in the times but now switching over to service industries and turism etc.

Cheers!

Hi Lulita

How did your trip to Liverpool go? Ignore some of the posters here, Liverpool is a superb city and is infact the 2nd safest city in the UK, so ignore the scaremongers! Its true that like many Industrial cities in the 1980's the city somewhat deteriorated. However in the past 10 years record investment and infrastructure projects have transformed the city. It is now truly unrecognisable. Its musical heritage is 2nd to none and culturally it is an oasis. It has more museums and galleries than any city outside of London, a World Heritage Site Waterfront/Docklands and more Georgian Architecture/Grade 1 2 listed buildings than any other UK city outside of London. As other posters have said the nightlife is superb and you cant beat the humour/friendliness of the locals. Its definately my favourite city. This post is more for others but I hope you enjoyed your trip.

Hello
I'm a Colombian female living in London and moving to Liverpool in mid September because of work.
I have been in Liverpool and the city is nice, full of interesting places and people are friendly and warm, much more than in London.
I would like to contact Colombians living there, over 30 years old if its possible, I'm 34. But if not, I don't mind much. I don't meet much people there.

Best,

Liliana
