I need info about Medellin

I have a friend who is going to Medelling to meet his lover. This is what the person said about where they live: "yo vivo en las afueras de la ciudad en la localidad de caldas a 30 minutos del centro". Does this mean that the barrio is called Daldas? Is it a small town outside of Medellin? Does anyone know if this a good area or a dodgy one. Any info would help my friend because he is getting a little nervous.
Thanks!!!

Caldas Hi,

Caldas is no a barrio, Caldas is an area like Atioquia, off course there can be not so nice barrios btu don't worry, ask your friend about the name of the town.

There are 2 Caldas'. One is a small municipality to the south of medellin and one is a departement (state) to the south of Antioquia, which is the department that Medellin is in.

What this means is the small municipality. Its not a bad area, its kind of rural but its not bad at all and has a reputation for pretty girls.

the caldas mentioned.... is as george said, south end of medellin below envigado and across the river from sabaneta. it's east of itagui. lots of 'short time' hotels as you enter the area.

there are lots of cabinet makers and furniture makers in this area. it's more like finca area than city, although there is a 'caldas' pueblo, a little further up the road along the river. just before primavera. a little further on is a place acalled amaga. amaga is strange as it's built on a hill and you're either headed up hill or down. no in between.

back to caldas. my wife was born there in the previous mellinia. when we went for birth cirtificates of both she and her folks, some sixteen years ago. if you folks think it's a toughie in medellin or bogota or cali, try some little burg, where there not sure where they put 'those' papers. it was really interesting. i spent several days with my suegro there hunting things down.

as george said, caldas is basically uneventful, safe and for the most part, boring. i had a number of workshops there and had to spend a consideral amount of time each week with the shop foremen. to no avail, they always ended up doing things the way they wanted to any way.

good luck
