My friends and I just got back from Medellin. We absolutely fell in love with everything in the city!
The food!!! All I need to say is BABY BEEF! Everywhere we ate we loved the food. From Crepes and Waffles in Tesoro, to Bandeja Paisa near the University. Las Palmitas and Basilica had to be the best 2 restaurants we went to.
The weather!!! Coming from Miami where Air Conditioning is essential, we were astonished at how perfect the weather is. Just crack a window and sit back with your refajo!
The view!!! From El Poblado, the view of the city was GEORGOUS! Night or day, I could just sit back and enjoy the view.
The nightlife!!! We started at Tampleantonia, went to Las Parandas, then to Mangos, Santhos, Flow, Dejavu, you named it we tried it... They were for the most part fun, but I felt like it was too "touristee". I wanted something more Colombian. Our Colombian friends couldn't even afford to go to some of those places, I wanted the real partying. Parque Lleras was nice, but it was hard for us to blend in, we got the eyes from men and women who could tell we were not from there, but it was still a chill place. Thyco is allways great too for drink specials 2 for 1! Even on bottles of Guaro. Can anyone recommend more local hang outs?
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE WOMEN!!! Everyone always speaks about how beautiful they are, I thought they were exagerating. BUT there not, its true, THEYRE ALL GEORGOUS. But thats not all, they are the sweetest most caring women I've ever met too. So genuine, so down, just plain awesome. There were "RECHIMBAS" everywhere. And they all smile at you and talk to you... And the paisa spanish is so beautiful too. All I hear here is cuban spanish, no comparison by far. Even when a Paisa gets pissed she still sounds sexy!
So overall, I would buy an apartment there in an instant if I had the money, I love everything about the city. Bien vacano! I'm probably spelling that wrong...
Well just wanted to put my 2 cents in and see if anyone can direct me to more local hangouts, obviously not ones that would put a couple colombian americans in danger. CANT wait to go back, maybe for Fiesta de los Flores!!! Talk to ya later..

Albatross says on Mar 29, 2005, 08:32: dwmte Yes, I've been to Florida, but (correct me if I'm wrong) Florida is in the United States and most "Cubans" there (under 40) have never even been to Cuba, they are in fact, Americans and therefore speak "American Spanish". “Democracy - a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance." - H.L. vladimiro says on Mar 30, 2005, 10:57: You pretty much saw most of the best clubs in the rich areas. I like "Guam Bar" up a little further en Las Palmas, too. Huge place with pretty good live bands that play Rock en Espanol and a lot of good rock songs in English. There are places in more middle-class areas that have a different atmosphere, not so many rich people, and play Colombian and Mexican music. I'll be in Medellin next week and can't wait even though I've been traveling there regularly over the past 4 years:) By the way, Happy NoRooZ.

princcipepersia says on Mar 30, 2005, 11:14: Huh? How do you know what Norooz is? Happy norooz to you too... Yeah we passed by Guam Bar too, we were looking for dancing but there was a band so we left. But it looked like a real nice place and supposedly they start dancing when the band is done. What are the names of the other places your talking about?

princcipepersia says on Mar 30, 2005, 11:15: Funny story about first night in Medellin. We had a funny experience our first night, we went to Templantonio, walked up and people were looking at us strange, we figured they could tell we were tourists. I think one of them even said "Mira este par de Maricas" so at this point I'm thinking, I hope this isnt a gay bar! So we walk in and this place was FULL of girls! from front to back, we were amazed, we thought we had died and gone to heaven, about 40-50 girls, drinking up a strom and getting roudy! So after the whole club stops and stairs at us, seeing as how we were the only men in the place, we find a table. We start thinking somehting has to be up, it just cant be this perfect here. So after we order a beer, we ask the bar tender why the odds are so good, to which he replies there is going to be a male stripper. We immediately asked for the check and left. Thinking back, we really should have stayed, cause even La Paranda which is where we ended up, had a male stripper, and not nearly as many women.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Mar 30, 2005, 11:16: Is that how you spell the Persian New Year? Here in Sweden I've seen the name spelled Newroz, and we've been discussing its correct pronunciation, help me out with this one Prince! "When shall we three meet again? princcipepersia says on Mar 30, 2005, 11:19: proper spelling I'm not sure of, but I've heard it pronounced No-Rooz. BUT, I have family in Sweden and they could just pronounce it different.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Mar 30, 2005, 11:29: thanks, prince it's spelled Newroz in the Swedish calender, pronounced usually /nooroz/ here. We have plenty of Iranian kids in the school, a girl whose name is Newsha is pronounced /noosha/ by her parents and we take our cue after that. Then again, it might be just a local habit of trying to fit the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word into the patterns of the Swedish language. "When shall we three meet again? dwmte says on Mar 30, 2005, 11:42: as i remember, living in iran, the gringatization was, 'nohrooz', heavy on the 'no' in the first syllable.

VanMan says on Mar 30, 2005, 13:04: medellin I've been here in Medellin for almost a week and I must agree with Perisa dude. Wow, oh Wow, oh Wow. It is nothing you can compare to (except California perhaps). My new nickname for it is Silicon Valley...and Medellin doesn't have many software companies. Haha. We were at Lleras Park (Triada) having drinks at the BodyTech restaurant. Bodytech is something else...WOW WOW WOW. Working out there...well, let's say there is much inspiration. I have not only been staying in Envigado and El Poblado, but I have also been to the far north of Medellin and taken the cable cars up to the hills...and I have been to the far south of Bogota (Bolivar Ciudad, oh the smell...) as well as its north. The contrast of rich and poor is something to see, my friends.
