junior im very interested to hear about your trip. did you fly to bucaramanga from bogota? how was that ride? and how safe did you feel there? did you feel safe going out at night? is it easy to meet beautiful girls there? Im going to go there as soon as i have enough money....probably in september. HOw much money do you think i need for a 2 week stay? i know a family that i think i can stay with so i probably wont need a hotel. are there any bad areas in bucaramanga?

san juan de giron... mranderson,

flew to bucaramanga via delta airlines that works in conjunction with avianca airlines of colombia. arrived at bogota via delta, immigration took a total of 30 seconds, next was declaration of possessions of value and amount of money intended to spend while in colombia, this form can be found in the airline pouch in front of your seat or can be obtained at the airport at bogota, this also took a total of seconds...next was directed to a hallway that lead to a shuttle that took me to another airport called aereo puente or something like that, from there avianca flew me to bucaramanga airport palo negro. at no time did i feel nervous or in danger...colombia is a safe country...people are very friendly, more so than the rude and sobbish people in american airports. people in colombia are anxious to help and make you feel very good about being in colombia.

i loved bucaramanga and even better giron...giron is a gem that very few people in this site talk about...well actually, i have never heard of anyone talk about san juan de giron...they are missing the most special place in the world...it's like that small town in the movie "doc hollywood" a dream too true to be real...i always went for walks in the nite...when the town of giron came alive with street vendors and family walking around the town and the church square...what a life!!!

one dollars or 2,600 pesos buys a big meal, hotels start at 20 dollars a nite in bucaramanga...there are some in giron also.you won't need much money. as far as bad areas, i wouldn't know never saw any...i stayed with my fiancee and her family...i met my fiancee on the internet...well, actually...she contacted me...and everything followed from there. there are many beautiful girls in colombia, i live in southern california so i am used to seeing beautiful girls all the time, especially mexicans girls...does colombia have the most beautiful girls in the world? depends on where you live in the world...i'm sure there are places with fewer beautiful women but certainly not more.

the colombian people are fasinated by americans and they love everything american...i heard american music all day long...but even more interesting was the fact that colombians listen to mexican music half of the time...i think that most non-hispanic people know this because of the culture they come from(not a value judgment), but colombians know word for word the most popular and culturally significant mexicans songs some as old as 50 years old or older. this impressed me alot being mexican...spent all nite long singing vicente fernandez songs and drinking aguila beer with my colombian friends...

colombia is safe and alot of fun...nothing to worry about...

Junior,

I wouldn't go as far as saying that colombians "listen to mexican music half of the time". Yes, classic rancheras are popular, but that's where it stops. We don't listen to all that horrible banda and norteño music (composed of about fifty band members who all wear the same outfits and hats and whose groups name all end in something 'del Norte') that Univision is always trying to shove down the throats of US hispanics. But I would also say that the opposite is also true, mexicans love our cumbias and many have imitated them, some even have the nerve to pass them off as 100% mexican. Sorry if I sound aggressive but I just needed to clarify that point. I'm glad you had a good trip in Colombia.

respect... there is no need to defend colombia...you are right about the nortena music to a degree, but some nortena music is popular i.e. tucanes, jennifer pena and other modern music. the colombians in giron listened to alot of mexican music...alot. let's try and keep this positive and not reactionary...mexican is good stuff no need to be derogatory. all hispanics have alot in common and there is no need to feel above other hispanics...case in point...during one of my conversations with cab drivers, one asked me what part of colombia i was from...why do you think this was? also i was asked to be a padrino to a beautiful 4 year old colombian boy, which i accepted humbly and was honored to be asked, hispanics have alot in common same as in mexican culture a padrino is very important and is inclusionary...i am now a part of this family, a relative. every time i said "estoy enamorado con colombia" colombians beamed with pride not the reactionary negative stuff i get on this site.

the colombians in giron felt a kinship with me because of my culture, my language and my religion(catholic) as i did with them.

This does not seem to be the case, Junior, in Medellin. I very rarely hear American music there and they prefer to listen to local Colombian music. Of course they also listen to modern Latin pop music much of which is Mexican.

ColombianoX tends to get overly nationalistic at times... but I get what he's saying about the relationship with mexican culture. First of all junior, don't get me wrong, Mexico is a country with incredible history, literature, music, food, cinema, etc... but the thing that ticks off us colombians at times is that we have always been bombarded with mexican culture and expected to take it all in wholeheartedly even if its crap. And I'm sorry, but there's a lot of crap coming from Mexico, I'm refering especially to the endless parade of cardboard telenovelas on tv, the raunchy and narco-themed norteño music, Laura-in-America-type talk shows with people beating each other up, and utterly boring and fake *big* pop stars such as Talia, Christian Castro and Gloria Trevi.

In Colombia we've developed our own styles in all of that, we have Betty la Fea, vallenato and cumbia, Shakira, Juanes... just to mention a few. And the thing that's annoying to some of us is that given the size of Mexico and the power of its media empires, we sometimes have no choice but to swallow every lame "entertainment" product they can throw at us. For colombians in the US it's even worse, because we see how the whole country seems to lump all latinos together in one culture and people, which usually happens to be mexican, not to mention the way Telemundo and Univision are slowly molding a "standard" latino audience so as to target it easier, and guess what... they all end up talking mexican and singing rancheras.

But again, I mean no offense to you or Mexico. I love the food, Jaguares, Maya culture, beautiful landscapes, the recent mexican movies, and a ranchera here and there, and hope to visit someday!

It's nice to encounter someone who understands my point of view. By the way, usted es hombre o mujer? Si eres mujer, con mucho gusto te doy mi correo, ya que sé que tú también vives en el sur de la Florida. Now getting back to the topic at hand, I'm so glad that DirecTv now carries Caracol TV Internacional because we colombians are finally spared from the garbage that is Univision and Telemundo (the lesser of the two evils). Believe me, having to watch the Copa America on Univision with its constant bias towards Mexico was torture. The only thing I like about Univision is the colombian commmunity page on Univision.com. I hope you do check out 'el Foro de la Comunidad Colombiana', that's my cyber-home when I'm not here. Here's the address and I hope to see you there soon:

mmmmmmmm ColombianoX,
Hold your horses mate! You're coming off a bit judgemental there (but it is allowed here ;). Chill with the mexican brothers. You're letting out some well needed steam & if it makes you feel good, desembuchalo todo asi se nota lo que te molesta y lo que sientes, es bueno leer opiniones como las tuyas para una perspectiva que existe de un tipo Colombiano, y seria bien chevere si otros like-minded mexicanos leyeran tu mensage, aver como te responderian. Everyone here has noticed how proud you are of your country & that's great, however, some things are rather obvious. Latins from other countries have heard the rumor all along about Colombians believing they're more than their next door hispanic-neighbor, but then again, the same can be said for the Argentinos, and other latin nationalities. I don't mean to come here to say something negative but a lot of it can be crystal clear; I have many colombian friends in the NYC area. Now I realize whY I was actually glad Argentina defeated Colombia in the Copa America. Cheers Amigo, tomate una colombianita bien heladita

By the way, we colombianos (and all other hispanics for that matter) we're also very glad when Brasil crushed Mexico in the Copa America, it finally shut those bocones up at Univision and made them come down back to reality. "Cheers, amigo!"

hispanics.... the colombians i met in bucaramanga and giron are not reactionary nor do they feel the way a small minority of colombian men and their white worshipers. all hispanics have a common thread...that's culture, language and religion. i do get the unspoken feeling in this site that somehow colombians are special in a way that other hispanics are not but only from a very small minority. the people in met in colombia do not mirror these negative points of view. they seem to like all music american, colombian, mexican..they listen to everything, and the young people are very much into american music...something that most people on this site aren't aware of because of their age, but obviously, young colombians like everything american. from my conversations with young people english is very important in the schools.

i believe all hispanics are related, it's not mexicans fault that white people think that all hispanics are mexicans...the american government harassed me for my passport, they wanted to deny me a passport because i might possibly be illegal. it wasn't until i contacted my u.s. representatives and the state department that i recieved my passport immiediately. although, i would not be insulted to be thought of as a colombian. some dudes are a little over the top and they are all alone. every hispanic country is special no one is super special over the next...get over it. the colombians i met in bucaramanga were happy to meet me and we related due to the commoness of our culture, language and religion.

some people on this site are too much and it's getting old..."los indicados"

I have three Colombian stepchildren, ages 14, 13 and 10. Sure they listen to American music and some Mexican pop music but they are Colombians through and through. Their preference is for Colombian music. And as for English - you've got to be kidding. I have never been anywhere where people, including the young people, had less interest in learning English. If they could possibly manage it, they would never learn English, even now that they are living here in the United States.

english... utopiacowboy,

logically, it appears the suggestion has been made that i am a liar...the observations i have made have been totally empirical...furthermore, i would more than gladly give emails and phone numbers to colombians in bucaramanga and giron regarding my above statements regarding english in the schools and the type of music young colombians in bucaramanga and giron listen too, also, i had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with young people from barancaberrmeja, who also were studying english as required and all of these young people were constantly asking me to speak english or what something meant or how to say it.

obviously, my observation bothers some people for some unknown reason, but this does not change the facts, medellin, cali and other colombian cities are just parts of colombia not all, maybe, people in this site should visit other parts of colombia and maybe get a broader perpective of colombia as a whole. there is a very small minority of people, colombians and whites who would like things to be a certain way, but its unrealistic...no one owns colombia or its people regardless if you are colombian or not...the people of colombia speak for themselves, the observations i have made i base wholely on my conversations with colombians and i don't speak for them...they spoke to me...

Relax, Junior, I am not calling you a liar. I am sure that this was your experience in Bucaramanga - my experiences in Monteria and Medellin (less so in Bogota) and with my Colombian family have been quite the contrary. I was really surprised by your information because my experiences have been so completely the opposite. Your observations do not bother me at all. Maybe it's just bad luck on my part that I never encounter anyone who is interested in speaking English. One time I was in Exito and I heard a Shania Twain song on the Muzak!

sorry, but at times it feels that people take things a little to serious, i have always enjoyed your observations and your input helped me alot in my first trip to colombia, i found them to be invaluable as well as others whose input aided me greatly.

being as educator, i tend to view things from my perpective, also, when people i met in colombia asked me what i did in the united states, they interacted with me with alot of respect because they tend to hold educators in high regard, well, at least in bucaramanga and giron...as these are the only places i know in colombia. my fiancee and i have discussed visiting all of colombia someday.

i believe that it is just as important to understand the young people of colombia as they are the future and many times view life much different than the adults most people interact with when in colombia...

giron is a very special place...the nite life is serene...calm and pleasant...

I don’t understand why some Colombians in this site refuse to admit that most Colombians and especially Colombian women love everything American including the men. America has great impact in the culture not only in Latin America but the world, that’s a fact. Clothing, movies, TV, sports, music, women like Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson, Michael Jackson, ooops.
Ok, so they can’t dance, except for the brothers and Latin American, what’s most important is that they are mostly really nice people even with all their wealth. I know some Colombian with a few lousy pesos and yet they walk around like they got more money than Donald Trump.

In Medellin I regularly hear ranchera music in Medellin, not normally in the clubs though, but in the cafeterias.

I am nearly 40, but nearly all the girls I go out dancing with are 18 to 22 years old, they all seem to like ranchera music as well. Also about half of them ask me to tell them the words for something in English, although most of them don't speak English.

In some clubs in Medellin they play a lot of American/English pop music, in these clubs it is normally a young crowd as junior pointed out.

Perhaps because we're not all a bunch of sell-outs (like you!). Yes, I agree many of my colombian people unfortunately have this embarrassing tendency to think that most things from abroad are somehow superior. Hopefully one day they will learn to value more what is 'criollo' (domestic) and overcome this inferiority complex.

not only young people but some older people too have this tendency to consider everything foreign somehow superior. I find it a little irritating, too. However, there's also a great many who are proud of their country, language and culture. Methinks junior heard what he wanted to hear and what people around him wanted him to hear. They took special consideration to the fact that his background is Mexican/American and thus he got steered to ranchera joints and everybody in his surroundings who could speak a word of English wanted to talk to him. That's common in Colombia where everybody is eager to please a visitor and try to make his/her short stay memorable.
"American" music is heard in Cali too, there are a couple of radio stations that play almost exclusively gringo music, but the rest (a great majority) play Latin/Colombian music. Some nightclubs and discos also specialize in "American" music, but again, it's only a drop in the ocean. English is not spoken (except at a very rudimentary
level) at the stores, restaurants, offices. The level of English taught in schools with the notable exception of bilingual schools is generally mediocre tending to poor.
"White" and "American" are terms used by many on this board that are inaccurate and misleading. They are by no means synonyms with "US citizen" or "Anglo-Saxon".

Desi

soooooo you think that was condescending? I thought I was trying to find an explanation why your experiences in Colombia regarding Mexican music and "many" young people speaking a lot of English and the popularity of gringo music differ so widely from what I myself and many others have expressed here. Yes, Colombians tend to be a bit patronizing when trying to please a visitor: what all that bad rap they feel that a visitor should return to his/her own country with positive impressions about Colombia, and I don't blame them a bit.We all do that, it's not being insincere, only catering to a visitor.
I don't see any reason why you should take my not being "this or that" (Latina/Americana, Catholic etc) into this equation. How do you know that I'm not Catholic? What do you think is my motivation to be writing on this board? What do you know about my experiences from Colombia? Why do you think I don't know anything about schools in Colombia? Only because my opinions don't match your one-visit impressions in a small town in Santander. (I should know that the level of English in schools is not too great: I've spent a way too many years trying to teach them the basics of the language with a varying success:) Some of the teachers working in schools can't put five words together to form a sentence in English. One of the people who used to work for me is teaching English at the Colombo in Cali: I didn't even know she could speak English! Maybe Giron is different: everybody speaks beautiful English, adores everything "American", listen only "American" or Mexican music, and so on: no, I don't think I'd like to live in that place. I like Colombian music and culture, and much prefer to speak Spanish with a valluno accent.
Cheers,
Desi

I must admit, Desideria, that as aggravating as I sometimes find their strong attachment to all things Colombian, I wouldn't have it any other way. As my wife says, you married a Colombiana and you got one. Si, mi amor!

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Hold one second, I 'm talking about disliking white Colombians not Anglos. I love white women more than anything in the world especially when they get drunk. My best friends are all Anglos, no matter how goofy they look on the dance floor.

I'll get there, when I get there!

Elmo you are pouring gasoline on a fire. I know you are trying to shelter Junior with words of wisdom. Maybe he was one of your donkey friends during your visit(s) to Mexcio or California. hmmmmmmmm jajaja

Whoa! Has this gotten unexpectedly ugly... especially for a post which started simply stating "i love colombia".

I was actually about to start defending junior despite not agreeing completely with his comments. But after his unfair attacks and racist "white" remarks towards Desi for simply giving her objective opinion, I think this guy's a total creep and should be kicked out for his bigotry!

Peter, doesn't this qualify as a racist personal attack? I'm sure it would if it said "black", "indian", "asian", etc. I say ZERO tolerance with intolerance, and unfortunately junior took a nasty turn in that direction.

I'd love to say yes, but as Juan Luis Guerra would say..."hay un imepedimento, no me dejan salir ni a la puerta del aposento:), or in other words, CaleñoX would probably oppose....
cheers,
Desi

Calm down!! Ok, calm down, you lot!!

No, I don't mean it, I love to read a good ole argument!

No, seriously, though. I think what's going on here is that you are all right. It's just that you've seen different things and places. There ARE Colombians who love all things USA, but there are also Colombians who don't. Some of my Colombian friends love music and fashion from the US, and others don't. Generally, I would say that younger people are more US savvy than older people. Some hate the US and constantly slag it off.

As for the English, well, I am an English teacher, and love teaching it, as I am a lover of languages. Some of my students loved learning English, others weren't interested, and some resented the fact that they had to learn it.

Some Colombians love Mexican music and TV, others don't. I know Colombians who love rancheros, but others who would rather cut their ears off than listen to them! The same goes with vallenato, and that's Colombian! Most people LOVE Mexican humour, that's for sure (including me) and who wouldn't like groups such as Cafe Tacuba and Molotov. They're very popular. My male gay friends like the soap operas, as they're very camp, but no-one else I know takes them seriously.

I know many young guys like ColombianoX with opinions like him in Colombia, and I know that there lots of people like the warm, welcoming people who treated junior so well on his trip.

So peace and love guys!!!

litost... "all mexicans are scum and gang members..."

you see litost...there's a background to my words...this little clique made this comment to me a while back, i had not made any racist remarks or had said anything ugly...so who really started the racist comments...peter let this happen without censoring this little mean spirited clique. to disagree with something i say i don't have problem with, but i sense a tone of condescention from this clique...maybe you should refer back a few threads and read for yourself...i was treated disrespectfully for no real reason. to disagree is one thing, to say that "all mexicans are scum and gang members..." is totally uncalled for...i didn't hear desi speak out against this comment and actually colombianoX cheered this on...and this comment was made by a white person from seattle...no i'm not prejudice my best friend is irish from new york, but don't start with racist comments and neither will i...

lastly, i'm tired of these selfanointed colombian experts...bull loney!!!!my opinion is valid...and i can respect others opinions if stated respectfully and withour malice and racism...

so litost, i didn't start it, but this group always does this on purpose to my threads, brings in this sense of superiority of colombia, they are no more colombian than me and many times have a limited sense of the hispanic culture...

i am not scum and neither am i a gang member...

i love colombia...junior

seattlejames...my apologies i'm sorry, you are so right...and no it was not you...there's another individual who made that ugly remark to me, so when others were back slapping him for his opinions i took it as approval. i will gladly provide the thread the post the whatever and so others can see for themselves how i was treated by this small clique...i see them as racist and anti-mexican...i am not a racist nor do i believe one race is better than the next but neither am i timid...state you point of view sincerely and honestly and i will never react poorly...intentions are very important...

again seattlejames i apologize i'm sorry for the inference...please accept my apology...
