PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post

I know you guys can help me out fellas

since i'm going to colombia i was thinking of surprising my girls and asking her to marry me in colombia so her whole family can see her daughter getting married. i was doing some research and found out pretty much what i need in order for us to get married in bogota.

BIRTH CERTIFICATE : TRASLATED TO SPANISH
A COPY OF MY PASSPORT
A COPY OF MY STATES DRIVERS LICENSE
A SEARH OF MY COUNTYS RECORDS CERTIFYING THAT I'M NOT MARRIED HERE.
THE THING IS I WANT TO SEND ALL THIS TO HER MOTHER CAUSE SHE ALREADY KNOWS MY PLAN TO MARRY HER DAUGHTER AND SHE NEEDS TO GO TO THE NOTARIO SO HE CAN POST THIS IN THE NEWSPAPER AT LEAST A WEEK BEFORE THE MARRIAGE RIGHT?

BUT I NEED A NOTARY NEAR THE LOS ANGELES AREA THAT CAN NOTARISE ALL THESE DOCUMETS AND I THINK NEED I ALSO NEED TO SEND HERE MOTHER A NOTARISED LETTER AUTHORIZING HER TO SUBMIT THESE PAPERS FOR ME RIGHT?

CAN ANY OF YOU GUYS PLEASE POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AS FAR AS HOW TO GO ABOUT THIS OR IF YOU GUYS KNOW OF A GOD NOTARY NEAR THE OS ANGELES AREA THAT CAN DO THIS FOR ME I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT..

IF SOME OF YOU GUYS ARE AROUND THE BOGOTA AREA WHEN I GET MARRIED THERE YOU ALL ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO COME TO THE FIESTA AND HAVE SOME BEERS WITH US.
I WANT TO DO THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE THANK YOU SO MUCH MY NEW FRIENDS....

Sorry, you do not need your papers notarized, you need them APOSTLED. Its something totally different then a notary. An Apostle is an agreement with the United States and Colombia. It verifies that the papers are authentic. Once you send your papers to Colombia, your soon to be nother-in-law needs to send the papers to Bogota to get them translated.

Things u need

letter stating you are not married (from family member or close friend) Apostle

If married before, you need records saying you are divorced. Apostle

Birth Certificate, issued within last 3 months. Apostle.

Hope this helps, and Buena Suerte

Why don't you just go here:

Colombian Consulate
Los Angeles
8383 Wilshire Bl., Suite 420,
Beverly Hills, CA 90211.
(323)653-9863

They can notarize everything for you. I think you would have to go there anyway.

Its an Apostle, its different the a Notary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have to get the Apostle in the US., from the state where the papers originate, not from a Colombian Consulate

Oh well. Maybe you should go there in person.

"You have to get the Apostle in the US., from the state where the papers originate, not from a Colombian Consulate"

I think it still has to be approved by the Colombian Consulate for it to be valid in Colombia. They stamp it at the consulate and then you bring it to Colombia.

you get the apostile from the Secretary of State, State of California, if needed...there is one in LA.....and you may have to have the notary certified at the local county government if it is not issued in Sacramento, and in a satellite office..........

(323)653-9863...try changing the last number to see if you can reach a back line....i have called them from SJ and have always connected via phone...

Morphus.......being a legend in his own mind is stressfull enough, leave the poor man alone!! =)

Some of this information is incorrect.

You will need an Apostille on your birth certificate, if you had divorces, you would need them to have an Apostille. The papers must be dated less than ninety (90) days old, to be valid. You don't really need notary search saying you are single, since that isn't a document that exists in the US. The Apostille will come from the Department of State of whatever state is issuing the document. IE, my birth certificate had to have an apostille from Ohio, the divorce had to have an Apostille from Texas....

We tried to wade through all this crap, two or three times. You know what brought it all together? A cooperative priest. I think my wife may have given him a copy of my passport. I don't believe she provided any other documents.

Always check two or three sources, for the same info, when dealing with Colombia. For every task, you'll find a couple people saying it can't be done, and then you will find someone willing to work with you.
