I know we're not supposed to ask questions about travelling in Colombia anymore but...

My husband and I are going to Choco. The plan as it stands is to go by overnight bus from Bogota to Buenaventura, and then take boats from there. Have heard not-so-great things about overnight bus in that area.. what do you guys think? Would a smart person fly?

If you are a smart person, yes. Bus to Medellin then to Choco would be OK. Why in God's name would you go all the way BV from Bogotá the back up to the tourist area of Choco which is basically due east of Medellin????

BTW, who told you this??? " I know we're not supposed to ask questions about travelling in Colombia anymore but...

A smart person would NOT go to Chocó! And Buenaventura is not the safest place to hang out right now either. You can't think of any reasonably safe places to visit? It's a pretty big country.

The bus should be fine as it should be day by the time you are heading into buenaventura. However, I'd suggest flying instead. I'm assuming you are going towards Bahia Solano or Nuqui. The boat from Buenaventura supposedly takes about 24 hours and I can't imagine it's real safe.

Under no circumstance would I take a bus from Medellin into anywhere in the Choco. There was a father and son shot on a bus along this route just a couple weeks ago.

I think la camp is a refreshing voice here, with all of these all too serious people dragging us down. Serious can be good, but some of these people are just relentless in their all knowing of all things, and they don't even seem all that enlightened, much of the time. If they could lighten up just a bit, I think they might be worth listening to. Nobody can be all that certain of all of these things we discuss here.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

thanks for the advice everyone. we're gonna bus to Medellin and fly to Nuqui instead of the whole BV thing. a good change of plan i think.

once we get to the coast we're gonna bogart a canoe from one of the eco-hotels, paddle up to the Panama border, and when we get there we'll go ashore, build a fire and roast a parrot to celebrate our journey.

Buenaventura is one of the most dangerous places in Colombia lately... but, hey... have fun.

Redr..good change of plan. Not that you cannt do any of the other routes you wanted to do.
This depends on your knowledge of Colombia.
Choco is a dangerous part of Col but keeping to the tourist parts you will enjoy a fantastic adventure.Do not go anywhere non tourtisty without checking with the police....Infact I would not be too keen to do anything different than the main tourist stuff, this time of year adds to the risks.
By the way the boat from BV to Solano is not as romatic as someone mentioned on a different post...i travel by lancha several times, but i knew the boat owners. Its a type of trip you need total confidence in your carriers...

unfortunately, my article on the smoking-hot puppetry scene in Vermont got cut short. it would take months, possibly even years to fully research that article and seduce it into its highest potential, if you will. Alas my trip to Colombia got in the way of that.

Fair play to you Missus. Actually, I really do like puppetry. Once upon a time I attended a puppetry workshop held in our Norwich Castle. And I've spent a fascinating afternoon in Lisbon's haunting Museum of Puppetry- a place I can't recommend enough, for those interested in such things.
