i know there's many lovers of 'ron medellin' out there....

but when you're back in the states and you run out...what to do? i just discovered a rum from cuba . it's called 'ron matusalem' and it's fantastic.

i found it at ABC liquors in daytona beach--by accident--as i dont like most rums that are out there. it costs about $19.00 a bottle (750 ml). try it and let me know what you think.

for all i know, you folks already know about it and i'm just the last guy to find out.

If you check your label again, you'll discover that your rum is ' cuban style', made in the Dominican Republic. Ron Matsusalem has been out of production in Cuba for many years. And, considering the absurd continuing embargo, it's extremely unlikely you would find a Cuban product in American stores. And being successful in getting it into the states is a whole 'nuter ball game.

Of course, that has nothing to do with your enjoyment of what you have in hand. ¡buen provecho!

If you are in Florida I assure you that Ron Medellin can be had. Might be just a tad higher than some local stuff. I have found a source for Aquardiente in Louisianan and see all the Colombian stuff when I am in Sarasota.

Yep, you're right. I can buy Cristal in Mandeville, Louisiana, just north of New Orleans,

If you want really good Rum try Flor de Cana from Nicaragua. It is economical, has won several international awards and has varieties that go great with cuba libres, mojitos, or even on the rocks. I reccomend the 4 year Blanco or the 7 year and up. Enjoy!

Ron Medellin is one of the worst Rum's I have ever tasted. I will stick to Ron Caldas.

Smile if you are a thinker!

YES dwmte7 I agree, I do love Ron Medellin, and I have just run out, and that sucks.

Thank you Canada and your god-damn useless, garbage, pathetic, money-grubbing restrictive alcohol laws. It is those laws that prevent me from getting a decent wine at the dep and any imported specialty items anywhere.

lpdiver says on Oct 6, 2007, 15:39:

Cali I agree about the quality of RON MEDellin and others as well. I have been known to pour good stuff into the MT bottles of Ron M.

I love rum but I always drink rum from the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix to be specific. I have friends who live there and I like to support the local industry.

Gator says on Oct 7, 2007, 09:58:

My First choice is Brugal Rum from the Republica Dominicana but Ron Medellin is a close second. Since I drink rum on the rocks so taste is number one..

yes, i'm in florida....the pain being, i'm in daytona beach...sorta qualifies as red-neck heaven, what with nascar, motorcycles and tattoos, etc. however, rum/ron is not a big drink of choice here and ron medellin is nowwhere to be found...sure, maybe in maimi, but not here in d.b. by the way, i'll take ron medellin over caldas any day. just personal.

but, the mathusalem is good drinking...especially on the rocks.

I have never tried Ron Medellin, but I had the opportunity to try Ron Viejo Caldas in San Andres a few months ago. I really don't understand the hype. I like rum, but that shit was nasty. Sadly, it was the only rum they had at that particular hotel bar.

Nice, Morphie... indeed!
By the way... wasn't your grandpa an Italian? Are you being self ironic and I am missing it?

Ron Medellin is decent, and better than many other choices in Colombia, My favorite is Meyer's from Jamaica, but I have never been able to find it in Colombia, even in the fanciest shops.

BOYCOTT CITGO - CHAVEZ SUCKS!!!

dwmte7 says on Oct 9, 2007, 06:41:

meyer's, like most commercial dark rums is ok...but it's hardly a batch-by-batch brew as one finds in colombia and other latin countries. i include licores de antioquia in that b-b-b group. just much more local and less refined. like comparing bacardi with ron medellin. in comparison, bacardi is more like whiskey and r.medellin is just a dark-sweet rum. that's what i liked about ron mathusalem. a b-b-b brewery without the commercial strength that one finds in the likes of bacardi, meyer's, etc. hell, ron medellin is just an unpretentious cheap, sweet, local rum that works. si o no? too, since i'm not one who drinks to drunk, i never suffer the ill effects that liquor, of what ever class, produces.

it's proving a bit odd, these days, but i'm finding that i rarely drink at all, anymore. what is it friends, age? pity damn, for countless years, how i so enjoyed my pina coladas and rums and coke (and coke) and ron on the rocks. now, i guess age has given rise to a basic disinterest--certainly in the quantities consumed in the past--in all the above. again, pity.

Colombiche says on Oct 9, 2007, 06:52:

Ron Medellin cannot hold a candle to Ron Viejo de Caldas. Even hard core paisas from Medellin will admit it. Ron Viejo de Caldas (made by Licorera de Caldas in Manizales) is the best rum in all of Colombia hands down.

Other good rums (in my opinion) are Brugal (DR), Barcelo Dorado (DR) and Havana Club.

Hey dwmte7 -

You could try:

http://www.b-21.com/

They are in Tarpon Springs, FL and sell Ron Medellin and can ship anywhere in Florida by UPS. They have a van that delivers but the closest they get to you is in Orlando. If you are in the South Florida area let me know as there is liquor store I go to in Weston to get Ron Medellin and Aguardiente.

Here I prefer Ron Viejo de Caldas.

dwmte7 says on Oct 11, 2007, 19:48:

paisita...ya know, for near 20 years now, i've heard folks say, 'O, ain't nothing like ron viejo de caldas'. couldn't prove it by me. now i'm a firm believer in 'every chicken to his own roost', but compared with r.medellin viejo, it's just more ron. when their 12, 15 maybe 20 years old, they're a bit smoother. but better? not for me. just give me a medio de ron medellin and it'll work with the coke o el hielo.tambien, porque pago mas?

EMAN...what do they git for a medio de ron medellin in miami or tarpon springs? where do you live? you in exile, too?

At B-21in Tarpon Springs it is $12.99 for a 750ML. I live in South Florida and I go to a liquor store in Weston which has a large Colombian population. It is $10.99 for a 750ML of Ron Medellin. This store also has Ron Viejo De Caldas, Cerveza Aquilla, and several different brands of Aguardiente including; ANTIOQUEÑO, BLANCO DEL VALLE, CRISTAL, and NECTAR. If you are ever in Weston, there website is: http://www.northlakeliquor.com
