Hola!

I know there is racial discrimination in Cali! My GF's sister said find me an American, but he need not apply if he is Black!

Their Aunt had an affair with a Black guy under 18 when she was married. It broke up that marriage and their Grandmother basically disowned her 2 children from that man!

RJ you look clean to me.

There's racism all over Colombia.

I can see someone having their preferences so there is a grey area or fine line in SOME cases. I have an American friend who ONLY dates Asian women - Chinese, Japanese, Korean.... He won't even give a second look to any Victoria's Secret model - I'm serious. He doesn't even see these hot women on the street if they aren't Asian.

Is he prejudice? If he were Asian himself is he prejudice? If he were African American is he prejudice?

There are indigeneous and Black women in Colombia, but my GF's amiga is indigeneous and does not like White guys. interracial dating is more common in the USA.

Hola!

I was speaking with my GF from Cali and she said many of the people from the rural villages come to the Agua Blanca section of Cali. The city has helped that section by providing electricity and other services. Sometimes poverty and a poor education is worsened by racism, but sometimes racism is thought to occur when poverty and a poor education affect getting a job.

In the USA white people do not rush into all Black neighborhoods. They called me a minority when I lived in N. Philly! I saw the Agua Blanca section to be about 100% Black, so I can understand the feeling of race being a problem there too!

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Aug 14, 2008, 12:25:

And yet, Cali is the least racist Colombian city. There's a small upper class of the descendants of what used to be the former sugar barons and industrials bosses of the city that is pretty closed to everybody from outside (they love European people to death though, but look slightly down on gringos) and they may well be considered racist too, but they¨re more class-conscious than racist. Poor, uneducated white are shut outside and shunned just as much.

Otherwise, yes, there's racism in Cali like there's racism in all Colombia. There's sexism also, and agism. There's all kinds of discriminatory practices on the job market. Old habits die hard. The vices of the bygone generation are carried on. But it's getting better, it's changing, slowly but surely.

The video clip was from Distrito de Aguablanca. That's a problem by itself; with all the displaced people from the puerto, Buenaventura, most of them with minimal education and with the unemployment rates of Cali being what they are, its's a breeding ground for street gangs and criminality. Colombia needs to address the problem of its 4 million displaced people asap.

Back to the original post and what was mentioned in the video, I've been thinking for a long time that simply passing and enforcing a law against the general requirement to attach a picture to CVs would do all kinds of good things for decreasing inequality in Colombia. Getting rid of the need to include an address on a CV would also be good, but more difficult.

They rolled out the red carpet for me, billyB. I don't know why it hurts you so much to hear it. I'm happy with it, never better.

August, yes, I was going to say the very same thing. Attaching a photo to a job application is discriminatory. As a matter of fact, the part they ask for personal information should be minimal. No picture, no age, race, no marital status.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear that Cali is the least racist city in Colombia.

But I don't believe that lower-class Colombians look up to Mexico. I've never heard a Colombian say anything good about Mexico. They'd sooner look up to Colombia, their own country.

Most Colombians will look up to US, and some of the more educated ones will look to places like Australia, Canada and Europe, but perhaps that's more to be different than anythign else, or perhaps they get tired of the obnoxious tia who thinks she's god's gift to Colombia just because she lives in Miami or New York, of which there are many.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Aug 15, 2008, 01:01:

It's an old saying in Colombia about the countries and social classes, I don't know how much truth there is in it. It may well be one of those generation things...people of the barrios used to love Mexican movies, Cantinflas, Pedro Infante and Mexican music, especially rancheras at 3 a.m, when the guitars come out and everybody thinks they can sing El Rey or La Araña.

I heard a lot of talk about wanting to go to Europe last time, 2 years ago in Cali. People wanted to live in Spain, visit France and England. Everybody seemed to know somebody who was living in Spain.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Aug 16, 2008, 02:48:

I have no resentment against the ladies of the dedo parado...as a matter of fact I spent considerable time with them during my last visit. One of them picked me up at the airport. I stayed at another one's home, went to pray the rosary with them, partied with them, went shopping with them....

Why wouldn't they "give me the time of the day?" I've always been rather well-connected in Cali, even if I know had I been born in Colombia and with a shade darker tan all those doors would have been closed for me.

It's just that I see myself different from them, I have friends in all social classes, don't share their political views (most of them have none, except their husband's) and because of my unpbringing cringe every time they speak despectively of their hired help.

My Colombian friends that I appreciate most are people from the Uni, my husband's solid middle class friends and family (not all), people I can talk with and be relaxed at the same time.

I have no further to contribute to this thread, until we start discussing racism in Cali again, instead of my class identity Cali. (I have none, being a foreigner, I enjoy the liberty of just being myself)

I know a lot of Colombians who loathe the thought of goin to the US. They pick Australia/Canada and Europe as their prize destinations and then won't bother after that.

But I would say the majority would love to go to the US, in Latin America the US generally seems to be the equivalent of the holy land. That's not surprising, the US offers many fantastic opportunities.

Someone says that Colombians make fun of everything, nail hit on head. People from Antioquia will make fun of everything, that's a fact, and it's amusing to hear too.
