I hope Ingrid will be the last one being released.

Thanks but no to Sarkozy. I am tired of this constant talking about Ingrid and constant forgetting of the others.

I know this may piss some people off, but she put herself in a position to be captured. When she went off to campaign in farc territory, she was repeatedly warned that she would be in danger and unprotected. She chose to ignore the warnings and went anyway and was captured along with Clara. This by no means justifies her kidnapping, but she put herself in that situation. On the other hand, most of the other hostages were either hunted down by the farc or captured while serving the country in the militarty or police. Sarkozy can go to hell if he agrees to take the farc of the terrorist list for handing over Ingrid only.

I think an attempt is being made to put up a smoke screen about the totals. The FARC do not KIDNAP They are simply keeping these OTHER people until their families “PAY the FARC their (back taxes)

The following list of hostages are what the FARC call "canjeables" (exchangeable), as they only offer their freedom in return for the liberty of over 500 FARC members held in Colombian prisons.

Humm,, 38 people,, I’d imagine we’ll see headlines stating “FARC releases all Hostages". Then a footnote that the 3 americans aren’t among them.

cali373 says on Mar 7, 2008, 22:27:

robi666 and billyb, actually it is not that easy as you say. France alone does not maintain a list of terrorist organizations. It is an EU list and while France may not want the FARC listed as terrorists if they release Ingrid, does not mean other EU countires want them delisted.

I actually interpreted the statement as: if the FARC wants to have any chance of being de-listed ,then they must release Ingrid.

It also does not make sense to call an insurgency a terrorist group because no matter what you think their aim is to overthrow the government of colombia and if civilians are killed or injured, well that is part of war (And that I got from the former US defense secretary Don Rumsfeld). If we re-call that during the U.S. revolution, the revolutionaries were called rebels NOT terrorists (grant it, the word terrorist was not sexy back then and they was no culture of fear). Were they terrorists? Yes indeed by today's standards, our founding fathers were supporters of terrorism. I dont think of them as terrorists but as insurgents just like the FARC with different ideology of course. But they did commit acts of terrorism ambushing British troops.

So what is the difference, well the word terrorism is now the term to use to instill fear into people and justify war.

Smile if you are a thinker!

goin_south says on Mar 7, 2008, 22:32:

Ctg Bound says on Mar 8, 2008, 09:25:

cali373,

To be classed as a rebel, you need to have a large support base in the Country you are fighting.

Picking the American War of Independance, becuase you did, the colonials who were fighting the English and Royalist supporting colonials were called rebels. There were no polls taken then, but approx 1/3 of people supported the Royalist, 1/3 supported the independance cause and 1/3 didn't care.

With numbers like the above they can can be classed as rebels, FARC has a support base in Colombia of 1-3%, so 97-99% of the population don't support them, so they can't be rebels.

You will get some FARC supporters to say the polls are fixed, yet they NEVER publish any polls differant to the above, quite simply because FARC has no real support base in Colombia.

cali373 says on Mar 8, 2008, 10:16:

it would be nice if you were correct, but you are wrong.

I had a great time in France and Colombia, and the U.S. Americans talk so much shit, imports from France to the U.S. have increased sinc 9-11. The rhetoric is amusing sometimes but not when it affects rich people.

Smile if you are a thinker!

cali373 says on Mar 8, 2008, 10:18:

Ctg Bound

Their is nobody in the world that really knows how much support the FARC has. So they have practically no support huh, We are going to have this debate again in 4 years and the FARC will still be around. I really wish I am wrong though, and they would just lay down their weapons.

Smile if you are a thinker!

podborski says on Mar 8, 2008, 10:22:

I don't care how much support they have or don't have, they have the choice to protest peacefully, and they don't.

They know they will not win in any democratic election, so they resort to the time tested policy of terror, which causes the ruling government to crack down severely, which then gives a bunch of naiive european pseudo-intellectuals grounds to claim the ruling authority is fascist/authoritarian etc.

It works every time, which is why we still have terrorists.

Ctg Bound says on Mar 8, 2008, 10:29:

cali373,

I disagree, the FARC have virtually NO support within Colombia, the left like to talk as they have a support base, but they don't, its up to the left to proove that they do, with non doctred polls, they never even attempt it as they know there is no support here.

There could be supporters of FARC 60 years in the future as there is of Hitler, means nothing.

Ctg Bound says on Mar 8, 2008, 10:31:

podborski,

Exactly, they could NEVER win a democratic election, they have no real support.

billyb says on Mar 8, 2008, 12:45:

The very heart of the problem is that the FARC would never want elections, unless they are the kind that give castro victory margins of 99.99%

Mr. Hollywood says on Mar 8, 2008, 14:59:

Back to Ingrid, I think the saddest irony is that her "value" to the FARC is actually only a byproduct of the massive international attention that's been focussed on her captivity. Remind me to leave strict instructions that if I'm kidnapped NEVER allow me to because a "cause célébre" (as Pres Sarkozy would say). Please denigrate my standing and value until the FARC is ready to pay my family to take me back.

billyb says on Mar 8, 2008, 21:22:

For Ingrid's sake i think the FARC has realized that her value has been overplayed and that Uribe and Colombia will not be held hostage for one high profile/value hostage and they must know that they are not going to get any special consideration for releasing her. Her family, chavez, france and the FARC overestimated her value, and now realize that the majority of Colombians have very little sympathy for plight in as much as it overshadows the hundreds of other hostages. So i think that the FARC will release her soon because the consequences of her dying in FARC captivity will greatly outweigh any benefits that they thought they could attain from holding her.

Alma del Norte says on Mar 8, 2008, 21:25:

Agreed

robi666 says on Apr 3, 2008, 08:02:

The annoying stupid commentary about Ingrid Betancourt goes on.. like the actions that show that a rich is worth more than a poor.

Yesterday, her son publicly asked to Manuel Marulanda release his mother so "he won't be remembered on the history books as an assassin of women".
http://www.eltiempo.com/politica/2008-04-03/ARTICULO-WEB-NOTA_INTERIOR...

So, again, why don't they stop making such stupid commentary. Offending the other hostages and the memory of thousands of Colombians?
I know, he is her son, but it really does not help the cause.

This is a comment from El Tiempo forum on this news:

in recent discussions with locals, alot of them think ingrid was kidnapped as a ploy to gain public sentiment. this was to be used to capture the hearts of colombians in a presidential bid. it seems to have gone terribly afoul.

god is in your head

robi666 says on Apr 3, 2008, 08:09:

That's obviously stupid talking.
But, that's what the mediatic show of Sarkozy and Betancourt family is gaining among Colombians.

"I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present."

Mr. Hollywood says on Apr 3, 2008, 10:29:

I wonder if Ingrid's son really thinks Tirofijo isn't already seen as a killer of women, children and men.

I'm sympathetic to his pain, but this is really stupid rhetoric.
