I had to share this

I just got stopped by a lady in my office who is scared to death because her husband is going to Colombia for a Schlumberger project. He is one of our video directors and will be going down to do some shoots. She was concerned about his safety in Bogota.

I didn't have the heart to tell her that he will likely be going to places like Barrancabermeja and Neiva. I did tell her that she probably had more to worry about with Colombian women than Colombian rebels. He'll likely come back with a smile on his face and a new MSN account.

In all honesty, she is a pretty reasonable lady. She wanted to talk to me to get some real information instead of relying on the rumors and stereotypes that most people take as fact. It's still funny though.

I once sat next to a fairly young woman who was nervous about being in Colombia on her first business trip. She said her company had experience in these things - meeting her at the airport with a company driver, holding meetings in a secure hotel, stressing that employees should not run around at night, etc, etc - but she was still nervous about being a kidnap target.

Then she told me she was a corporate trainer based in Houston and was on the final leg of a marathon business trip to Moscow, London, Alaska and Bogota. I guessed "Halliburton" and she was shocked that she had let that slip. I told her she hadn't mentioned oil or Halliburton but Houston plus a trip to four oil centers were pretty good clues.

Moral of the story: The guy shouldn't talk too much with people he doesn't know.

Sadly, that ignorant attitude doesn't just exist amongst the Americans.
Before my first trip to Colombia, about 4 years ago, I was in the company of a woman born and raised in Medellin that had moved to the states about 30-40 years prior with her husband.
When she found out that I was planning a trip to Colombia she told me "be careful of the Colombian women."
I couldn't help but think......WTF is that about?!?!?!
Ignorance knows no nationality.

One of my relatives told me a pathetic story the other day.

A neighbor of theirs in Neiva had gone on vacation to the US for about four months. This woman had eaten the same pastry for breakfast at the same corner store for as long as anyone could remember.

When she got back from the US, she went to the same store one morning and started acting like she couldn't remember what the pastry was called. The old lady that ran the store just rolled her eyes and said, "It's the called the same thing it's always been you imbecile".

This is a common "syndrome" that seems to affect some ridiculous Colombians that have lived abroad for any length of time. They go back and act like they have forgotten Spanish. It's like they think they are somehow impressing people with this nonsense when in reality everyone thinks they are complete, pretentious idiots.

I haven't lived in Colombia since I was a little kid, yet I always go to the same bakery and corner store and order all the same grub that I've ordered my whole life and the people that work there don't even have a clue that I live in the US.

It depends on the length of time. I think is ridiculous that you forget the language when you only been away a couple of months. However, people that been years, it's a different story. I have forget quite a few words in Spanish, and my mom too. That's why, now I try to look in the internet for articles to read in Spanish. When I was in high school in Colombia I met this girl that had been living in the United States since she was very little, and she said she forgot many spanish word, but when she came back to Colombia, it was happening the other way around, now she was forgetting English.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS...

I've been warned off visiting Colombia by everyone I've talked too ... plus dealing with the endless cocaine and kidnapping jokes ...

The strangest thing to me though was receiving the same warning by some friends from Bogota that left 7 years ago for here (Canada). They told me that for my first trip (next week!) I should not even think about going without my buddy who has been to Colombia several times and "knows the ropes".

Of course my lady friend in Barranquilla says that they are crazy to be worried ...

================================================================

Wabbits, I'm starting to do some film production in Colombia and since there are almost no international jobs being posted there (the foreign producers grab their exposed film and run to the airport immediately) the Colombian post production facilities are very... how shall I say it... "rustic." There's not even a dependable lab in the entire country - everything gets shipped to Miami.

If the political situation ever changes enough for serious foreign productions to come to Colombia then post production services will be a gold mine - as will film production service companies.

Unfortunately (for Colombia) I don't see their international reputation (on an insurable business level) changing any time in the near future, so with very few exceptions they won't be getting any real foreign film production going there...

Cheers,
Terry

Ooooh I've seen these people and they get on my freaking nerves. Once I met a paisa in NY who didn't remember how to say "hot dog" in Spanish. I said "Es sino que traduzca. Hot = caliente, dog = perro y ya". Needless to say she didn't like that.

I'm like you, I haven't lived in Colombia since I was a kid but I don't put on airs and pretend to be something I'm not. I like my morcilla envigadeña with chocolate Luker and all that good, delicious crap they have there. The last time I was there was in 2006 and before that it was 1994 and my family was amazed at how "paisa" I am and that I didn't squirm at the food they served. Come on!!! I'm paisa!!! =D

A gringo married a hotdog seller off Ave. Sexta in Cali and they stayed for a while in the States...some four months, perhaps and returned to Colombia. Another friend met them at a party, most gringos and everybody spoke English, but this friend of mine just Spanish. He noticed her, the gringo's wife and though, well, She speaks Spanish, I'm sure so he approached her and asked "Usted habla Espanol?" "Oh yes, un poquito" she said, with a heavy gringo accent.

The daughter of the paisa who told me 'beware of Colombian women' has a daughter. She hasn't been in Colombia in about 15 years and has only been twice in her life, but she still tries to show me how much better her Spanish is, and impress me with her 'knowledge' of Colombia. When I mentioned something to her about being paisa she responded "what's pasia?"
Pathetic.
