I gotta be stupid...

Imust be mad to have agreed, what a fool.Retire at the age of 42 and go live in colombia.I need me bumps read. What am i gonna do with all that spare time? How am i gonna fill my days? I mean you can only spend so much time laying in the sun next to the pool, occasionally moving an arm or a leg just to let the circling vultures know i`m not actually dead,or maybe take a buttock clenching, nerve shredding bus ride with one of calis many suicidal bus drivers down to the river for a picnic dressed in my mosquito and bott fly proof all in one body stocking which is also camouflaged so i can hide from all the right wing death squads and farc kidnappers. Then back home dodging the motorbike riding muggers and illegal coke labs.Pick up the hammer by the front door for beating off the enormous cockroaches that think its their house,a nice cup of coffee made in an old sock to calm the nerves,a cold shower and a sweat filled night cos theres another power cut and the ac`s gone off......I cant wait!!!

Sorry Hope you didn't sell everything,, where ever you lived "before" retirement,,, if you did,,, then you may have a problem if you want to return.

I know quite a few people in the same position,, they either find something to do or,, it seems,, die.

But the grass is green there isn't it?
"The grass is always greener on the other side." I find this to be true every time I travel. I sit here in the states thinking how ordinary life is. I finally take my trip to Colombia and the first week or two is great. Then I find myself missing my hot showers, gas guzzling suv, and shitty fast food. I get back two the states and start thinking maybe freezing cold showers in bogota (los suegros won't pay the high electric for a water heater), watching my back everywhere I go, and crazy bus rides aren't so bad. It is like a vicious cycle. At this point I haven't been to Colombia for over a year and I find myself in the latter. Fugdis, I think you need to go on a trip. If I find myself getting bored in Bogota I go to Melgar or Suesca, just a change of scenery can help. Good Luck!

Right wing death squads? What nonsense. I travel all over Cordoba and no place in Colombia has a stronger AUC presence than Cordoba. It's perfectly safe for gringos. We ride the buses and travel by private car to some of the most remote places imaginable. In Monteria itself, my wife and I walk about the city at all hours without fear. It's almost like being home.

furdis... you difinitely need a change of scenery...

take off for medellin and leave the skitos behind. travel up to llano grande, rio negro, el retiro, maranillo, tablaso, carmen de viboral (i'd skip le ceja as the friends of c. castano hang out there) and i'm sure, after you fill a week or much more bumpin around these parts, you'll kick your self in the behind for moving to cali in the first place.

remember, retirement is the same all over the world. what to do after hitting the gig? you can't sit and wait for the 'happenings' to come to you, you have the responsibility to activate yourself and indulge yourself in what ever interests you. art, music, architecture, ladies, archiology, etc... don't blame the doldrums on cali--although it's understood--you gotta get up and do.

make local friends, pass time indulging in their interests until you find what it is you want/need to do.

the first couple of years in colombia, i have to admit, i went fricken nuts. i'd fly back to the states for a weekend just to air out my head. then, i'd miss poblado (the old poblado, not todays glorified playground) and i'd fly back. after a number of years, i just took the dull days with the great days. i suffer the same contrasts here in florida. i live in daytona (have a home in envigado, south medellin) and if GOD created dull, it was when HE dreamt up daytona. but since the little one wants to finish her studies here, we're stuck here for awhile.

while i'm in colombia, i buy and sell/restore antiques and run around eastern antioquia looking for stone pilones (grinding stones) it's great fun, i meet all kinds of folks even insurgents, but they have never bothered me and have even lent a hand while extracting a 700# stone from the ground. nice, eh?

now days, it seems so many of the younger guys go down to colombia to do bars and get laid...been there, done that, but that gets old real quick. better a lady that you're with on a permanent basis and bars only on occassion...personally i prefer estaderos where you can eat and drink and meet families. antioquia is great for these.

good luck for your blues and boredom...if you have questions on the area around medellin or antioquia in general, e me at: dwmte at bellsouth.net.

What to do? It's not just the young guys who come to colombia to party and get laid. The younger set actually seems a bit more timid in my observations. What beauty for the old fart to have a beautiful girl fawning over you. I left my 61 yo friend alone in Exito for 1 minute and when I returned he was being adored by three teen in their cute little school uniforms. Of couse he loved it and thourghly enjoyed wriggling out of their invitation to come to the weekend family sancocho. He spends his day going to the gym, 5 hours at the EAFIT University followed by coffee with the U gang. then the evening, well it is probably best to have a regular girl but you don't want to eat the same bandeja every day now do you! And even after 3 years I too still love to walk around the mall looking at maybe not the hot chicas but for sure all the hot single moms being discussed on other threads at the moment. Feel like a waffle or crepe??????

I've been eating the same bandeja for several years now and all I can say is, I hope I get to eat it again tomorrow and every day thereafter.

oy vey That's all fine, I have been doing the same -- but does a gringo ever get laid in this fucking country without paying for it? I mean, the American joe, and I am one, can take only so much fawning from 14 year olds in catholic school getup. At some point you have to get it in. Sorry to be crude, but that is the truth. I guarantee you your old goat is getting no more than sancocho (thank God).
