Congratulations!!! So, does this mean your extended vacation in the northwest has come to an end? ¡Qué lástima! Just when the weather was starting to improve....more or less :)

silviat says on Jan 20, 2006, 09:56:

Thanks! Yes I am now a part of the workforce of the US... oh guys I am so happy to have a job... you have no idea. I know mi gordo didn't care about me working or not but I just feel so much better being able to help a little.

Bob which improvement in the weather? I am sitting in from of the kitchen window of our 5th floor apartment and all I see in the horizont is very gray clouds! Maybe the improvement in still in seattle and it will take a while for the wind to move this clouds that are over me.

No kidding I haven't seen the sun like in 10 days.

I love the NW but gosh... this really makes me miss colombian.

When I was in Colombia I didn't like getting tans and my friends would joke about me saying I as pale as a ghost. Well I am sure if they would see me now they would say I am of the same color of casper.

Crazy4Cali says on Jan 20, 2006, 14:12:

whaddayamean? Isn't the grey slightly lighter today than yesterday?

You'll find that those of us who live in the northwest have a hundred words for the different shades of grey...Just like the eskimos in Alaska have a hundred words to describe the snow.

Seriously, when you've looked at these grey skies every day for the past 25+ years, you really start to see the subtleties.

But, I confess that I've already bought my tickets to Florida so I can get a "solar recharge" :) After 25 years of this "fun" I still can't go through a whole winter without a trip to sunnier climes.

Oh I don't envy you While you and your wife will be having to deal with the nasty sunny weather I will be enjoying a lighter shade of gray!

;)

How lucky... we were thinking on going to AZ if the things with my university didn't work out, but they did so now we are going to stay here all the winter. Of course it worked out for the best...

Anyway Colombia it is for next Christmas... si o si.

Mireland you are right... it's good for the soul and for the sanity. Plus nothing better than being able to put my grains of sand on our goals.

I do not envy you guys! You guys are brave with all those clouds, cold and raining days. As for me leave me in nice hot, sunny warm Miami & South Beach. I go skiing once or twice a year that is enough snow and cold weather for me! LOL

Good luck,

silviat says on Jan 21, 2006, 11:00:

Thanks Arrowphx... if we decide on coming down there at some point this year I will let you know first thing.

My husband loves the dessert so I think he is getting desperate for his yearly dosis of it since he couldn't do it last year with all of the trips to Colombia.

And Peter... Yes you need courage to live here, hehehe. I don't know Peter I went to Miami once (when I arrived to the country) and I stayed there for a few days and I just din't feel very confortable. Maybe it was because I just got to the country and I was nervous and tired and sad for leaving my mother and friends... who knows. It was just too full of lights with colors... And everybody was a little weird and fancy in a way I didn't like (the people hanging out there.. that was south beach). And also you needed a car to go everywhere. That's the first thing I want on a city, even if I drive... public transportation. In that sense Portland works great for us

The great thing thought was the weather and the fact that I didn't even need to speak english because everyone spoke spanish... the access to cuban and latin food... mmmm

Maybe I need to go one more time when I am not too stressed out and I will enjoy it better.

utopiacowboy says on Jan 21, 2006, 11:24:

The same is true in San Antonio, Sylvia. With an over 60% Latino population, Spanish is widely spoken and available on tv and radio. The only problem is it has really hampered my wife's learning English - there is always someone who speaks Spanish.

you could create a space to speak english the 2 of you. Like a day of the week or a time of the day... or a room in the house.

I am trying to do that with Seth... we mostly speak spanglish but still he has learn a lot of new words

Ahhh I'll stop typing... I cut my pinky finger and I have stitches and I can't use it :(

silviat says on Jan 21, 2006, 22:46:

people with weird sense of humor the doctor who saw my finger had a really odd (non funny) sense of humor

He asked me if I saw Maria Full of Grace, and then he said... so did you get in the country like that?? "hahaha"

I was going to tell him it wasnt funny but then I realize that he was going to make my stitches so it wasnt smart.... what if he made it more hurtful? Anyway what an a**h***

You're right, it's the typical BS. Every drug lord on TV is Colombian. Every Colombian has something to do with drug traffic. Blah, blah, blah....

Crazy4Cali says on Jan 22, 2006, 08:25:

you should have asked him... ...if he could refer you to another doctor. You;d think someone with 12 years of college would know better.

I wonder if he asks his black patients what slaveholder they escaped from?

silviat says on Jan 22, 2006, 09:14:

Yeah it was an odd experience I was bleeding a lot and I had a very bad cold that had me in the house half sleep for the whole weekend, so I told mi gordo I didn't wanted to speak english and he should please answer the things.

So when the nurse asked what happened and he tried to answer, she turned to him and said ... No you no! Her!

.... ok? Worse for her because my understanding was 30% than normal.

And then the Dr's joke... the truth is that I was bleeding so much I just wanted them to put me stitches and stop it...I wasn't analyzing much what was being said.

Whatever... too late for complains... Now let's wait for the insurance bills!

Crazy4Cali says on Jan 22, 2006, 12:42:

Welcome to the U.S. You know why they didn't want your husband to answer, don't you? If you go to the hospital with an injury, they immediately suspect your husband of beating you until proven otherwise (even then they'll keep an eye on him).

Of course, the other side of living in America is you can file a complaint with the hospital against the Doctor for less than professional care and put the hosptial in a public relations vise. (Having bigoted doctors in the liberal northwest is very bad press).

who knows, maybe reducing your hospital fee might ease the "pain, suffering, humiliation" you suffered while at their racist hospital.

Miami = Paradise Hi Silvia,

Hope your finger and you get better soon and for you to recover from your cold/flu. You definitely need a car in Miami but that is all you need we have everything else. That is why they call us; the playground of the rich, paradise, the sunshine state, etc.

It is summer and beach weather almost all year long. Plus a melting pot of people and a lot of Latin’s and Latin foods. Your fiancée and you most come for a visit. We have from fine restaurants, dance clubs, bars, Latin and Colombian festivals, plays, galleries, beaches, boating, ship cruises, fishing, golf, the everglades, theme parks (Orlando & Tampa), the Keys, etc. It is a year long and non-stop array of things to do, from a lot of people to secluded romantic places.

Well good luck with everything.

Silviat I hear ya, I have heard stupid jokes like the one the doctor cracked. You get to a point when you almost have to develop thick skin.

I few months ago I was on a flight to Miami. We had a stop over in city X in the states. This guy from city X got on the plane and sat beside me. He must have thought I was dying to talk to him, because he started asking me why I was going to Miami, had I been there before, yadda yadda. I tried to pretend I was asleep but he would still talk to me. Then he asked me if I was French Canadian or if I had some sort of Latin background. I said yes, I am Colombian. Damn, that is all I needed to get this guy going.

He started telling me how he had all these drug dealer friends, how he had been invited to Colombia several times but was afraid to go. He was so silly that the other latinos in the plane were looking back at us and laughing. He was telling me about all the Colombian drug money in Miami... etc etc. Then he started telling me how his company stock went through the roof and he was now a new millionaire. He asked me why Colombian women are all hot, then he tells me he has 3 houses in Florida, a couple mill in the bank..... he spoke so loud, he embarrassed me the whole flight.

Funny part, is this guy goes around flashing his money, trying to impress the Colombian girl talking about it, then he will be crying when he gets stuck with a gold digger. Of course, that is the least of the evils that can befall him, with that silly behaviour he would have been perfect kidnap bait in Colombia. Ha ha ha.

This guy of course was a bad specimen. Thank God most people from city X are not like him.

ayyyy yankeelandia Bob, Seth and I thought about filling a complain, not really for economical issues but because it just isn't nice to be half stupid because of a cold and bleeding in your finger and that this idiot comes and does those stupid jokes... I assure you he thought it was fun...

And yes I realized they were thinking on domestic violence because of the mean way the nurse asked Seth to shut up.... but what a particular way of domestic violence would be to cut someone very deep on the pinky finger... Anyway it happened with one of those cans that you don't need a can opener to open then... what a dangerous thing.

Peter you are a great advertiser for your city... I love the way you talk about it. I am sure I will give it a second time, to be honest when I went there I was just tired and shocked by the change, and by seeing my dad for the first time in like 7 years... I might meet one of my girlfriends there this summer so I am sure I will have a better impression then.

Colombiche... gracias!

And about that guy... it must have been hilarious to hear him talk,I don't know if some people just doesn't realize that they are making an a** of themselves when they say such thing... and you are right that is exactly the kind of guy that if ever finds this forum will start talking bad about all colombian ladies because he can't posibly understand why in the world someone would do such a thing to him!
