That site has the peso at 2200 to the USD.

Xe has it at 2195. Hope dataifx is right!!

Xe updates on an extended schedule, where dataifx is almost real time. At any point you can refresh the page and the "counter" will reboot, however it automatically gives updates every 15-30 seconds. I would say dataifx and Xe are equally accurate, however you could be reading old news via Xe, which could lead you to believe they are running different numbers.

For example Portafolio.com says 2210 right now where banco republico shows 2139. What should I expect to get if changing tens of thousands of dollars. I have heard with that amount of money you should bargain for a better rate, how much?

It's pretty amazing that the currency market among others is so volatile with this wide swing in values and so quickly!

I'd happily dance a jig, naked and on my desk, if the peso was back at 1700 to the USD and my stock portfolio was back to where it was a week ago. Today, I'm only capable of a toe tap.

Could you expand on that last comment. I mean I know the difference between buying and selling, and how to go about it with the bank, but you make it sound like you you know something we don't.

With all the different places to exchange money. You are never going to get the most current rate anyway. It's just a good starting point to let you know how much you are getting screwed out of.

So i just changed a butt load of cash with davivienda. Unfortunatly the peso dropped 10% from when i sent it two days ago. But they said they would give me the special rate for money over 10G. There was no way to see the actually market there in the bank so my bro ran off to the internet and called me. They offered me 2054, portafolio.com said 2061 at that moment. That is a third of a percent margin. Damn good if you ask me.

beachbro: So as I understand your last comment here you took $10,000 USD to Davivienda and exchanged it for COP's. Am I correct or am I missing something? The reason I ask is because from what I've been reading here on pbh people say you get screwed on the exchange rate when arriving in Locombia with cash. Enlighten me if you could because if you did in fact bring cash to them and they gave you the exchange rate you say it appears to be a great deal.

No, it was a wire transfer. Here was my experience with a little more detail.

I faxed a signed request to my USB bank advisor and the next morning it arrived here in the Century account. It sits there in dollars waiting approval to be converted and released. All it requires is you to fill out form 4 and 11 there in the bank, show a signed compraventa by both parties, and give them the OK. They call in and give you the rate and if you like it, bam, money will be free that afternoon. Now in terms of exchange rate. I waa told 4% margin was petty cash, anything better than 1% was good. There was no way for me to watch the current real market feed so i sent my brother to the internet to see what kind of rate they were giving me. It was in fact a third of a percent, quite good if you ask me. I was kinda under the wire, because i could only get the sellers to sign the compraventa if I realeased the money that day. Thus I couldn't sit and wait till the market was good. I will do that next time for the 90% of the money I have not yet paid for the building.
