I am interested in traveling to Colombia how well will I be received.

Hello everyone,
Well, this question is simple but should not have to be asked in this day and age. I am an African America male and I would like to know how well I will be received in Colombia. Most people might think this is dumb question...(I agree but need to satisfy the eurge). I have heard for the most part it is not a problem but like the US some are idoits and that is life, but most Colombians are friendly and excepting. I would like to know what Colombianos think.

I think you'll be accepted just fine Colombia also has a large black populace, so you won't look like anything new down there. And yes, by and large, Colombians live up to what you've heard about being friendly and accepting. You know how it goes: treat people respectfully and they'll respect you back. I doubt race will have much to do with how you're received.

there's a long, long post on this very topic, from about 4 or 5 months ago, and probably others way before that, if you do a search. But, then you may read alot that you really don't want to hear. I mostly agree with the above posters. I think being black is like being short. If you think it's an excuse for less acceptance, then it probably will be. If not, then... go and have a good time. (At least they won't be calling you 'pasty gringo', right? Pasty, I think, refers more to that sick, aging, pudgy 'off-whiteness'.) Okay, see. You already got 'one-up' on some of the others.

Being black or tan or white... You won't have any problems with the color of your skin... you'll enjoy your time there. Your reception is more dependent on whether or not you are the typical arrogant American or European tourist there. If you show respect and show genuine interest they will respond well, but like anywhere else, if you travel there and act arrogant you will be received poorly. Down there your attitude and actions are waaaaaaaaaaaay more important than your skin color in this regard.

Most people might think this is dumb question. Not a dumb question at all. I will share my uninformed observations concerning Blacks in Colombia.

First of all Colombians tend to treat foreign visitors well. So you should be fine. Just like any gringo in Colombia, you need to pay attention to your surroundings. I don't believe you will be targeted simply because you are Black.

Having said that I want to share with you a survey(random count of observed) my wife and I conducted on our last trip to Bogotá. We counted the number of Black people we saw in North Bogotá in one week. The total observed was a shocking 10. In my home town the Black population is 75 or 80 per cent so that figure was a surprise.

Other cities such as Cartagena, Santa Marta and Cali have a large Black population. You might find those cities more comfortable. Bogotá by its very nature is more formal and thus less friendly.

This is not to be judgmental but simply an observation from a few visits to Colombia.

uhhhhhhhh... mecca Yes, really mecca. Why the sarcasm? My statement is correct and applies. I was not speaking about whether or not the man can get laid, I was speaking of general acceptence. Sarcasm without rationale is a waste of time... be specific if you think I am full of it... I'll be happy to back up my experiences. By the way... I am sure each of us has different experiences, but mine have been good... and that includes traveling with friends of mine that just happen to be african american.

You want to ride a horse in Villavo? Or ride a horse to Villavo? haha. The way there is simple. Go to the terminal transportes. Then, go to a window and say you need to go to Villavicencio. Chances are, before you even get to a window, there will be a guy who approaches you and already knows you want to go to Villavo. Don't ask me how they know, but it happens to me every time. The cost is about 20.000 to 25.000 pesos by mini-van. Most have AC and a few even have a TV with movies. During the day, it doesn't matter, you will be busy watching the landscape as you descend out of Bogota. You can get a taxi directly from the airport to Villavo for about 220.000 pesos if that is within your budget. I prefer the vans, because I just think it is cool. Plus, I'm cheap. Do yourself a favor, go out at night when in Villavo. My personal favorite is Aguapinelas on Wednesday nights. Club Kaurzo Friday night, and barrio 7 de agosto Saturday night. The taxi rides from any point "a" to point "b" in Villavo are 3.200 pesos. ($1.50 us) Some taxi drivers will still only ask for 3.000 pesos - old fee. You will have a blast - and please don't tell anybody. I don't want the word to get out.

Aztec I find your comment interesting, as I had the same observation. I can only remember seeing ONE black woman, the last time I was in Bogota.
