I-94 and Catch 22!!! Help Please

Hello All,

I ran across an issue today when I went to the Social Security Office to change the name on the Social Security cards.
My wife arrived on a K-1 on June 21 and was issued a I-94 that expires on Sept. 21. We got married on Aug. 20. The marriage license was received today and we rushed to the SS office to apply for the name change. The lady said that we could not because the I-94 has to be at least 14 from the date of expiration.(It expires today).

What do I do?
I have a feeling that I need to go to the INS office in Miami but we are talking at least a month for an appointment. This is how long it took to get an appointment the last time I had to go.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

expiration dates... aren't really expiration dates if they expire 14 days before expiration...right?

Catch-22 it is... We got the I-94 09/16/05 (exp 12/15/05), day of arrival (Ft. Laud), and went to the SS office 09/20/05, but did not rec'd a #; rather, a letter telling us they must 1st "check" docs, then if all is kosher, she'll get her #, up to 4 weeks from today.

We're looking to tie the knot Oct 22nd; then I guess we'll need to change the name on the SS. Since that is about 50 days before the exp date kicks in, I guess it will be ok.

Thanks for the heads up. Can't sit on my laurels when it comes to these issues...

I guess I need to clarify....
She got a SS card about 2 weeks after she arrived with no problems We just want to make the name change.
Now that we got the marriage certificate back(today) we are filling the EAD and the AOS.

So what do I do about the name change if the I-94 is expired?

UtopianCowboy? I think the house-expert is the one to answer; but I'm wondering how you got her SS# in only 2 weeks?

Before you got married...? Did she get a SSN before you guys married? Is that the process of the K1 visa. I believed the first thing to do was to get married...then apply for EAD and SSN...

Anyone knows if there will be a problem if don't change her last name? We want to keep it the colombian way.

My wife never changed her name, Kolkes. It really seems a lot simpler for her to just keep the same name since everything is in that name, her Colombian cedula, her Colombian passport, her Texas driver's license, her SS card, her green card etc. It just seems like a lot of hassle to change the name - just look at this thread.
