Hurricanes, Tornado's & Natural Disasters in Colombia

I AM CURIOUS IF OTHERS HAVE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE HISTORY OF "NATURAL DISASTERS" OCCURING IN COLOMBIA

After Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, I started to do some checking on the history of Hurricane's and tornado's in Colombia. I was not able to find any archived news articles about past storms hitting the northern coast of Colombia or any significant history of cataogry 2, 3, 4 or 5 tornado's.

After speaking with my wife, who has lived in Barranquilla all her life, she says she can;t remember this city ever being "Hit" by a storm in her lifetime.

Anyone have any information I am not aware of?

What do you think the PRIMARY threat (Natural Disasters) is for those of us who live in Colombia?

I've usually heard of earthquake's in Colombia. Other than that, I havn't heard much of natural disasters of any other type.

Yes, the earthquake is the main problem, and of course volcanoes. In fact one city is going to be in serious trouble if its nearby volcano blows. Also mudslides caused by torrential rains, and flooding.

Hurricanes usually do not form that far south and even when they do the conditions turn them away from mainland Colombia.

I really enjoyed being on the 15th floor in Medellin... and feeling the building swaying during earthquakes... whoooppeeee! I always thought of them as Mother Earth dancing and enjoyed the earthquakes in Colombia.

Tornado A very weak twister was reported in Soledad earlier this summer; officially classified as an F0 on the scale. It actually did a bit of damage, which is not hard to do in Soledad.

GringoDeLouisia that is precisely what I was talking about. They had a documentary about the volcano and the people of Pasto on TV a few weeks back. You would not catch me living there I am afraid. If that thing really blow they estimate the lava field will destroy much of Pasto.

It is good to her from you, I was more than a bit concerned for yourself and any PBH posters in that area.

Natural disasters in Colombia...

And in my rural area (30 km from Popayan) we also have earthquake activity. And the worst was the Armero tragedy which was an indirect result of volcanic activity (not direct lava but indirect mud flow).

In Medellin there have been disastrous "deslisamientos de tierra" (due to excessive rainfall) that have killed people who built in areas de las invasiones.

Death comes quick Volcano, earthquake or tsunami about covers the natural disasters.

There are the unnatural disasters but this has been talked to death.

A brick and mortar structure, especially with the brick tiled roof is a death trap. Being in a high-rise, same.

I’ve thought about this and am quite happy living a LONG distance from volcanoes. Guadua structure with a corrugated roof is about the best construction available for earthquakes. They sway and you won’t be buried by a collapsing wall or roof and are easy to repair.

Then again, I’m the kind of guy who wouldn’t live in a flood zone or on top of a fault.

Yes BAQ, I think you need to research earthquakes and volcanoes...those two frequent Colombia a hell of a lot more often than the hurricanes and tornados...happarently they don't like the food.

Water, Medicine and Canned goods Humm, well, after watching the fiasco in New Orleans, no food or water for FIVE DAYS, and considering this happened in AMERICA, I am stocking up on canned goods, water, antibiotics, batteries, matches, ect, enough to last for at least two weeks. If a SERIOUS disaster will keep essential items from citizens in America, I SERIOUSLY worry about what will happen here in Colombia given a similar event. When you consider limited resources of the Colombian Govt vs to U.S. Govt, one could really be screwed if a serious event happens here.
