humming bird feeders in colombia

Just wondering if they are available in colombia....i noticed at my wifes mothers a few buzzing around and thought i might bring a few feeders and nectar as gifts to colombia.I have a feeder out here in canada that attracts a lot of colourful hummers...(in summer)...
I suppose with all the flora in colombia there probably is no feeders..but there good for getting photos and once the birds start feeding they keep coming back for more.

you don't need to bring nectar...just mix 1 cup sugar to 3 cups water and boil for 5 minutes and you have good nectar....and no I haven't seen any feeders around where I live....the problem I found with feeders there was too many hummers and keeping the feeder clean was a bitch...now I planted some nice climbing flower vines up along the wall and I just have to water them not clean any dam feeder

Friends in Medellín have a feeder on their balcony. They fill it with water/sugar aswell and it is visited frequently by hummingbirds. They also have pieces of apple and banana on a string for the (other) birds. So, it must be sold somewhere... I don't even know what the proper Spanish name is or how much it would cost in Colombia.

I've seen a few over priced pieces of crap for sale.

Amazing, being able to sell expensive junk. Then again, could have been the wonderful tax system at work.

I purchased this at Wal-Mart for about 5 dollars. A really nice glass feeder with a sealed top. You can fill from the bottom and turn it over. Works great.

Wal-Mart had a large selection. Some were plastic and cost a few dollars. Look in the garden area, not the pet area. Go figure.

Cleaning? Humm,, isn't that what the domestic does?

Anyway, the sugar works well and I use red food coloring (3 or so drops) for appearance. I only hope the little guys aren't going into a diabetic coma.

I've seen YELLOW (not me) but it looks like someone pissed in the bottle. The little hummers don't seem to mind.

Whats his name,,that guy that lives outside Cali ?? drats, anyway he had some of the best photos of hummers I've seen. Do a search.

PS: That's my Avacado Tree in the background. Another reason why living in a nice estrato 2 home in a rural area is much better than living in a 5 "box" in the leaning town of pizza.

I'll bet that is a big deal in your city. I saw them building it but haven't stopped.

Lots of customers?

PS: I'd bet they don't have any. The ones I saw were at Homecenter,, doesn't that tell you something.

Poco you might be refering to me. I´ve had 22 species of hummingbird visit my yard at 2100 meters. They are:

1. Long Tailed Sylph
2. Buff-tailed Coronet
3. Bronzy Inca
4. Fawn-breasted Brilliant
5. Speckled Hummingbird
6. White-necked Jacobin
7. Purple Throated Woodstar
8. Booted Racket-tail
9. Western Emerald (formerly Blue-tailed)
10.Andean Emerald
11.Brown Violetear
12.Sparkling Violetear
13.Collared Inca
14.Greenish Puffleg
15.Green Violet ear
16.Shining Sunbeam
17.Green-fronted Lance bill
18.Tawny-bellied Hermit
19.Blue-headed Saphire
20.Wedge-billed Hummingbird
21.Crowned Woodnymph
22.Steely-vented Hummingbird

#s 9,13,16,17,18 and 20 will not come to the feeder.

During two years in north Cali I had a total of only three visiting my feeder: Steely-vented, Roufus-tailed and very occaisionally a Long-billed Starthroat.

Yes and now the photos are easy to find. As said in the comments, magazine quality and excellent shots.

I've been disappointed in the lack of species at my feeder. Two,, ha, even then they are almost the same except the larger bird has some white feathering toward the tail.

Aggressive. One will sit in the avocado tree and drive off any new visitors, unless it is the larger bird, then just a lot of noise.

I get a lot of these, what ever they are, in the Papaya Tree.

Poco, those are beautiful pictures.

That bird going into the papaya was probably going after insects, larvae, etc.

The Blue-gray and other tanagers are fruit eaters. Put out bananas sliced in half down the middle and you will get lots of them. Also Euphonias, thrushes and Acorn Woodpeckers (same as the Arizona bird) if you are in the country.

So that blue and gray bird with his head in the papaya is actually eating the papaya? I just figured he was going after insects ... and I should have ended my last sentence, in my above post, with a question mark. I wanted to ask a question, not make an ill-informed statement - which is what I apparently did. jaja

You're doing good compared to me. Green/Red !!!! Look what I get,, green only. Look what Atrevido gets,, a zoo of humming birds.

2100 meters,, about the same elevation. Actually I'm just below the cloud line which is about 100 meters up.

For some reason I don't get different hummingbirds. Could be the agressive green ones make the Cali area a safer place?

Maybe the buzzards ate them?

This one was on the roof. A bird that craps on its legs to keep cool and pukes on you if threatened is a bird to avoid.

Poco if you´re at around 2100 meters and have feeders out you absolutely should get a slew of hummers. That elevation is like the hummingbird sweet spot. Nice photo of a Black Vulture. If you or anyone else here is interested in identifying the birds the old standard is A GUIDE TO THE BIRDS OF COLOMBIA by Steven Hilty and William Brown. I even found it in Spanish at the Libreria National. A much smaller guide that includes the birds one is likely to see around Cali (or most of Valle department at the 1000 meter level) and which is pretty regularly stocked at the Libreria Nacional stores in Cali is GUA DE LAS AVES DE LA RESERVA NATURAL LAGUNA DE SONSO by Alberto Alvarez-López.

By the way the standard mix for hummers is one cup white suger disolved in one liter of water. No coloring necessary. I don´t have an empleada but I need one to mix suger water. Both of my big 48 oz. feeders are drained in one day. Hummers are birds the only birds who agressivley defend a food source. Also you must be lower. No such thing as a producing avocado tree where I´m at.
