How would you describe your passion for Colombia?

I have read many posts on this site for a couple of years. I enjoy reading all of your experiences. Many I can relate to. For me, Colombia has felt like home from the minute I landed and left the airport a couple of years ago. It is my home. Maybe this subject has been brought up before but what would you tell a newcomer what Colombia means to you? What keeps bringing you back to Colombia? What is it that you find here that you do not find anywhere else?

When I'm not in Colombia and I meet someone from Colombia, I tell them I live there. It doesn't take long for them to show their love for their country, their city, their family and friends. And they tell me their story with passion. Yes, they are out of their country trying to make a better life for themselves and their family but they long to return.

Is Colombia your home?

No, it's not my home. But No, it's not my home.

But the place entrances me. When I first step out of the airport at Cali: the sugar smell, the balmy heat, the salsa on the taxi radios...the drive through the dark to the city, the lights on the hills...it's like I'm drowning in honey.

I can't say I love it exactly; I loath it sometimes. But it's hooked me. Deeply. Like a love affair with a difficult woman... Dean Martin singing: "I was cursed from the first day I fell...".

I'm just looking for a cheap place to go on vacation. I like the idea that I can go to Colombia for 2 or 3 months and relax without spending too much money. I can get drunk every night and there is plenty of booty avaliable.

Feels like home Chrispej said, “Colombia has felt like home from the minute I landed and left the airport a couple of years ago.”

Your comment of “Felt like home from the minute I landed” I have heard many times when interviewing Americans who moved to a foreign country. And those are always the happiest people I have met. Some have moved to Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, Panama and other countries. But every time I ask the person to describe the feeling they can’t.

Personally, I am still waiting for that feeling to hit me. Glad that you found it.

Don’t know much about the rest of Colombia but I love the crap outta Barranquilla. I love the kaos, the noise, the music, the smell of aguila and piss, the dust, the heat, that eye blinding sun, las barranquillas and their fat round ass and of course the funny, vulgar, down-to-earth people from the south, where I feel most at home and spend all my time.
Love the poor side of my family and can’t stand my pretentious better off other half.
No I don’t want to hear about the fokin cousins gettin law degrees, or engineering, or what ever fokin degree they’re getting. They could stick that fokin degree up there ass, a sanitation guy in NYC with no high school diploma makes 20 times more money.
No I don’t want to hear about your fokin trip to Venice, why the fock would I wanna go there and get my fokin sneakers all wet. If I want to see paradise outside Colombia, I’ll gotto fokin Mexico or fokin Miami.
No I don’t want to hear about your fokin brand new apartment in Cartagena. No I don’t want to hear about the problems you’re having getting good muchachas de la casa (maids)
No! I don’t want to hear about your fokin daughters wedding in el Prado who’s marrying some mama’s boy from some prominent barranquillero family and not invite my no-class vulgar corroncho ass.

We all have the perfect woman... JMCana, All of us males here have dreamed about the perfect woman. Some of us maybe met her. The same goes for the women, of course. I think the same goes for the place we would like to live. It's a subconcious thing. We think about that wonderful woman, that wonderful place and when it hits us, there's no fireworks, no ticker tape parade, just a feeling that we belong. A feeling that can't be denied. We're always drawn back to it. That's how I feel about Colombia.

People can tell when you're in love with someone. People can also tell when comfortable in your environment. I love when the girls call me Papi.
