How will Colombia be affected by the election of Kerry or Bush? How will it affect US-Colombian relations?

Patrick says on Oct 2, 2004, 15:55: No change............. Since the war on drugs and military aid have been institutionalized (the bureaucrats and money are in place in the US) there will be no difference. The real question is what happens in a post Uribe Colombia. Don't blame me I voted for Ron Paul! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Mr. Hollywood says on Oct 2, 2004, 20:10: A couple observations Both Kerry and Bush have been supporters of aid to Colombia, so that probably won't change either way. More questionable is what happens if the balance of votes in favor of Colombian aid tips in either congress or the senate.

litost says on Oct 2, 2004, 20:19: I think it's pretty sad that in a US Presidential debate supposed to be about Foreign Policy, nobody had the idea to at least touch for a few seconds subjets other that Irak, terrorism and nuclear proliferation. What about the drug trade, what about helping fight poverty in the third world, what about the environment, what about globalisation, etc....???

caslug says on Oct 3, 2004, 17:12: Sorry to be blunt... But the average american voter probably couldn't even place Colombia on a map. So the canidates are not going to bring issues(drugs) to the debate that wouldn't gain them many votes, because their views are both the same(drugs are bad, legalisation is bad, put drug users in jail, etc.,).

litost says on Oct 3, 2004, 18:47: I never mentioned Colombia, I know it would be too much of a stretch to expect for a non-priority country to get a question in such a debate. I'm not naive. But there are many, many, many issues related to foreign policy that DO affect americans in a big way, it's just that everyone (politicians, journalists, average joe) is so caught up in the terrorism-Irak frenzy that no one bothers to deal with them. History has shown that such nearsightedness can turn out to be very costly down the line for a country.
