How to obtain a birth certificate from Colombia

I would be very appreciative if anyone can provide directions, addresses (snail or email), and/or information for obtaining a birth certificate from Colombia. I have tried a few of the online consulate's (Houston) and that section has been under revision for EVER.

Here's how you can do it in person. First of all you need to know the following:
The city where your birth was registered
The notaria number where your birth was registered
The Date your birth was registered
The Folio #

Basically then you go to a 'Notaria' (They have many offices throughout the cities and you need to go to the correct one) and tell them the date your birth was registered and the Folio # and they will print a copy for you and charge you about $2 or $2.50 for it.
And yes anyone can do it for you.

The process in Colombia is that the mother and father go to the notary and register your birth - the date they go (my wife's parents went 6 years later!) is very important and the notary will write down the birth of the child in a book and the page # (That's the folio) is very important for getting a record of it later.
If you can't do it in person; you can contact someone to do it in your behalf - but you need to know all four things. Good Luck

Question for rjstuff Thank you for the reply and information!! How do I go about this from the United States? Is there not a automated system by which to extract this information? Again, thank you!

birth certificate none whatsoever!!! it is actually a collection of fat books with all these records and you need to know the folio number and the notary you were registered, there are 21 notary offices in cali...so it would be helpful if you knew which notary you appeared registered, if you have this info. anyone can do it for you and it takes about 1 hour to get it.
I'd suggest you start calling one by one and see if they can come up with something on the other hand, I would think u might be registered in the first ten or even five, I don't think u would have to go through every single one to find ur certificate..

good luck in ur search!!!

The only way to do it long distance is to contact someone (a relative or a friend) in the city that you were registered in. Do you have all of the info? If not then you may need to go another route but again that requires having a contact do it for you. If you have lost this information (or never had it) you can use your Baptisiamal certificate (which should have your date of birth on it) to re-register at a Notaria - but this must be done in person - yes you can use a relative to do this. If you were not Baptised (like me) then you may have to go a different route altogether.
No, like paoliya said there's no automated system - its all in large registers written in hand. Do you have all the info needed or not? Good Luck
