How to get from Bogota to Cartagena and where to stay....for very little $$

I will be going to visit the husband in Bogota in 1 month, we will go to Cartagena to work on a documentary project for many days. The grant I have for the project is limited, so I am looking for the cheapest flight and accomodations while we are there. A couple of friends of mine went last month, they bought a package deal which gave them flight, transp to and from the airport, accomodations and food. I have no idea how much that cost, but they purchased it in Bogota for less than $800USD. Is this the cheapest way to go? Or can we piece it together buying the flight in one place, making connections on where to sleep in another, etc ? We will be going from 30 May until the 4th of June.
