How to get dual citizenship?

Hi, i am a colombian/cuban american living in the states. I plan on moving to Colombia in the summer, i need to know what i need to get my colombian citizenship. i called the consulate here in miami and they told me what i needed but it didn't sound to convincing. They said that all i need is the following...

my original birth certificate
my dad's cedula
my moms US citizen passport

also, that i need to go to the consulate with my dad and thats it.

Well i told them that i can't go with my dad because he lives in philadelphia and i live here in miami. My parents are going to be sending me all there info and documents as they request, and also im gonna have my dads colombian and us citizen passort and his birth certificate. What they said is that if i can't go with my dad, all i need to do is go with a colombian friend that has a cedula and thats it, why...i don't know, and they didn't tell me. they said that it would be fine. Does anyone know if this is true? And has anyone gone throught this process to obtain dual citizenship, US and Colombian? After i get my cedula, what does it take to get my colombian passport? any help would be really helpful. Thank you!

the long birth certificate When they say they you need your birth certificate, they mean the long certificate not just the 1/4-page one. You'll get this at the federal building. This certificate states who the father and the mother are along with other pertinent information.

you also need I did the same thing at the consulate in Coral Gables, you also need your parents' marriage certificate. You should call and ask again.

you also need continued....... you don't need your parents' birth certificate, but you do need your parents marriage certificate. It's true you can go with a Colombian friend, it's sort of like they are vouching for you. You won't get your cedula right away, first you get the contrasegna.

This is how I got my colombian passport.....once I had my contrasegna, I travelled to Colombia as an American with a tourist visa. Went to the passport agency and in about 3 hours had my colombian passport. They didn't hassle me about the contrasegna, just asked me to have it "legalizado" around the corner. That was about a year and a half ago, I still don't have my cedula, they say that can take up to 2 years because I'm over 25, otherwise I guess it's a quicker process.

About Your Cedula To obtain your cedula it takes a while, mine took two yrs and im 22, they say your age matter but I dont think its true because I started doing all the paper work at age 19 and got it when I was 21. My sister started the process at the same time and she still waiting, she is only 23.
Good Luck!!!

Dual citizenship... I was 30 when i first applied for a cedula and i was told that it would take at least 2 yrs. I picked up my cedula at the colombian consulate last week! so it all depends. The last time i was in colombia was in March-April of '05 and i could not get a colombian passport with the contrasena. It's not to dificult to get your colombian citizenship. Go online at the consulate and they should be able to give you a list of the documents that you need.

This Site Will... answer a lot of questions. I am assuming you read Spanish so I did not translate the information into English.

Best bet is to maintain contact with a consulate, since by law this is where the process must take place. Follow EXACTLY what you are told to do even if it appears to make little or no sense.

There is an office, not connected with the Miami Consulate, that is suposedly very good at provide assistance for paperwork at the consulate. Perhaps someone can remember her name or the name of the business.

will i have problems with finding work at any schools? will i have problems with finding work at any schools because i will have to wait about 2 years to get my cedula? with the constaseña and passport that i will have, will i be able to find work at schools teaching english? i heard that i will not have much trouble finding a job as a english teacher, even though i dont' have any experience or certificate. but this was assuming that i was a colombian citizen, which i guess i will be in the process, but techically i wont be because i wont have a cedula yet. And will i be able to get my colombian passport here at the consulate in miami (coral gables) with just the constaseña that they will give me? i also don't have my original birth certificate, i have the original 1/4 sheet, but the other part i don't have, and it seems kinda impossible to get because i have to go to city hall philadelphia to get it. thats about it for now, thanks alot for all the help now and in advance.

Omar..you need the work papers.. either work visa(if you're not COL national) or the COL cedula that states you can work legally. If you can't get(For whatever reason) either one of those, then getting a DECENT(good pay)job is going to be that much more difficult. I would try to get the paper for the COL cedula.
