How to? Cedula de Extranjeria in Medellin

Hi all, I'm waiting for a temporary spouse visa that my husband will get for me in Bogota (I'm on a tourist visa right now and don't have the money to go to Bogota myself) and I need to get my "cedula de extranjeria" after that, so that I can start working and get paid.

I went to DAS in Medellin today and they told me I need to make an appointment after I get my visa in order to get my cedula, but the earliest appointment possible is in mid-March. I can start working with just the visa and a certificate that states that I have an appointment for the cedula. So, my question is for all of those that have recently requested their cedulas at the DAS in Medellin: Do they issue any kind of certificate or some kind of paper that states you have an appointmet and are waiting for your cedula?

I really appreciate your insight, as I need to make a decision fast as to whether I should make an effort and go to Bogota or save that money and do it here in Medellin. Thanks!

whather you have a cedula de extranjera makes no difference if you can work. Your visa will need to say your occupation on it. Das has nothing to do with that. Also, after getting your visa you only have 15 days to go to DAS to get it stamped so even if what they say is true about the appointment you will need to go sooner than that.

What adrienne says above is true. You must apply for your cedula within 15 days of entering Colombia with your spouses visa.
I did that in Cali by just going to DAS with my visa and passport and registering for my cedula. No appointment needed. You need some passport photos and to deposit the fee at the bank used by DAS. Once that application is in you´ll get your cedula within a few weeks, which you have to collect in person. My visa says I´m retired, but I understand that I can take up employment if I want to. Not sure if I would then have to change my visa details or not though.

waiting 2 months.... remember what I wrote on another post....in Colombia ask the same question to 10 different people....you will get 10 different answers...better go back and ask a few more people

if you are retired..you will need to change your visa to an employment type ...to be legal

If you present yourself after 15 days, you will be fined by DAS.
Now, if DAS already gave you an appointment in March, which I doubt without seeing your passport and Visa, you will be fine.
More likely, they just told you about the date and give you the appointment when you'll handle them the passport with the visa, and I believe they will put a stamp on it right away to prove that you were there inside the terms.
About working... are you trying to have them put on something different than "Hogar" for occupation?

Thanks for all the answers! I actually already have employment, so my visa will say so. My problem is that I can't sign the contract and get paid until I have my "cedula de extranjeria" and I'm worried about having to wait another month or so for it since the DAS in Medellin does not have any earlier appointments. I know that my employer will accept some kind of document that states I have an appointment, but I don't know if DAS will issue it.

waiting 2 months for the DAS to issue a temporary cedual...that doesn't sound right......with in the first 15 days after you received your visa at the MRE the DAS have to do you paper work and give a temporary laminated cedual.....if I was you I would really check this out with aanother office if possible...that information doesn't sound right.....2 months would be the time maybe when you receive the credit card type cedual....here in B/managa you go in they do all the paper take your fingerprint and about an hour later they give you a laminated paper which is your temp card

Vic, I don't think DAS has already given an appointment to her. She was just asking infos about the procedure. Right Lili?

When she will show her passport with the VISA, they will put a stamp right on and give an appointment to her.

Lili..............a few folks have given you pointers here on what to do...............remember that they may not be 100% correct................do a search.........Robi is usually correct...........Vic's advice often needs to be double checked..............he means well.......but he's seldom correct................
