I have a car back in Florida and I would love to bring it here to Colombia. Is this possible? The car has Florida tags and is registered in Florida. Is it possible to get the title transferred to Colombia? Can I drive here on Florida tags? I know of someone who drove from El Paso to San Jose, Costa Rica and she still has Florida tags on her car there..
Anyone know if this is possible and how much it would cost?

Gator says on May 30, 2008, 08:15: It makes no difference you can NOT import a used vehicle into Colombia legally . The ONLY exception is a vehicle that is a true antique. The DAIN (Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales) site covers this aspect. It is up to you to provide proof of antique status. bradenmiami says on May 30, 2008, 12:30: Just send it down and take it out of the country once every 6 months ( weekend vacation to Venezuela or Ecuador!), renewing at DIAN for the 3 month interval. Importing new is pointless, and you might as well just pay a bit more to buy the same car here new....only paying the bit extra for the dealer to do all the hassle. Last option is to be smart and economical, and buy a little reasonable car here for the prices listed above. Not sure what it is you are trying to hold on to from back home, but chances are it might not even be a smart car to have here. The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

droble77 says on May 31, 2008, 11:19: That's an interesting way of putting it Rubito. Hadn't seen it from that angle! Although I don't think the tax policy is in place for that reason alone, it is true that car density in certain key areas of Medellin, Cali, and worst of all Bogota can get pretty insane. And the idea of paying $30,000 for the dubious honor of being stuck in a trancon for hours is NOT one that appeals to me. Sure, you're a bit more comfortable if you're stuck in a nice car, but you're still just as f***ed as everyone else. :) I would stick with TM, metro, bike, and buses and put that $30-50K USD in some better investment. . .

It's very common for high end cars such as MB's and BMW's and it's totally legal. Now, if the car you want to bring is in your name, then, as others have said, it's almost impossible.
