How much money is enough to travel to Colombia (Medellin) for about a weekend or 4 days.

If I go to Colombia (Medellin) how much is even to bring in American money. Is 2,000 bucks USD enough. I think that's about $4 million pesos? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

That's fine, especially if you have accomodation sorted? If not you can still find somewhere reasonable and while you are there that will be more than enough, I have spent £4000 but that was in 6 weeks and travelling about and buying things etc.

That depends upon the number of prepagos you want. You should be able to get by on 4 million.

However, don't bring US cash. Bring your ATM card. The exchange rate is much better.

dwmte7 says on Jun 29, 2007, 08:58:

amen on the use of the atm. it's like walking into your own bank. i've used atm's in the way outback in eastern antioquia where the banks are real funky. don't want to hall around more than a couple hundred thousand pesos, if that. 4 million is way more than enough, unless you're buying the room you're sleeping in.

I was going to say basically what panthdave said (and others) That is way more than necessary. Executive lunches - 5.000-10.000 pesos. An entire bottle of rum at the nicest clubs, 80.000 -100.000. An Aguila at a typical bar, sidewalk cafe, 1.000 -1.500 pesos. And you are taking 4.000.000!

I don´t think I could spend that much in 4 days if I tried. I have spent 3 months in colombia before for less.

Mike19 says on Jun 29, 2007, 13:19:

I heard don't be too generous with tipping because that can lead to getting robbed. I was told don't flash you dinero around alot. Opinions?????????????

ok keep the cash at home bring your ATM card and maybe a credit card if your staying in a nice hotel. I go for two weeks at a time an dthe most I have spent is just over 1 million pesos, but I stay with a friends family so other then paying for the food for two weeks and gas or taxis and th ecost to get into places it is less then 500 USD for 2 weeks there

Peter (Moderator) says on Jun 29, 2007, 15:00:

I remember partying on about 8000 pesos a night. 500 for half a bottle of rum, the rest for drinks and a taxi home. Yes, that was about 4 US$. Poorbuthappy!

LA MONA - I never saw "sin tetas," but I have heard of it. I used prepago so it would be more universally understood. The term used in Medellin is grilla.

Seabass - nice pair, eh? the one on the right is a gym rat. The other one is young with great genes. I'll bet that I have more than 500 photos of them. Me encanta Colombia.

GregYohn says on Jun 29, 2007, 17:50:

Hola!

Bring your Credit Card! If you are clueless, then you get to go to expensive hotels! You can pay with your credit card there. Think $50 a day is fine!

How much beer that costs $.50 a bottle can you drink in 4 days?

Robert Jorge says on Jun 29, 2007, 21:53:

My advice to you Mike19, do NOT tip. Of course do NOT flash your money. But only have the necessary amount for the event, plus an extra 20.000 "in case". Generally speaking, tipping is considered stupid, arrogant, giving papaya, unnecessary in Colombia. There are lots of exceptions, but normally, you do not even have to think of tipping. If you go around throwing money at everybody, it will make you a target, you'll look like an ass, and you ruin it for those of us who don't like "gringo tax".

I greatly appreciated the information Robert Jorge....but doesn't anyone tip anyone in colombia - as a nice gesture for someone working hard for them? I guess i'm thinking like im in th U.S.

goin_south says on Jun 29, 2007, 22:32:

Hey Mike19.
May I inject my 2 cents:
If you're not on a budget, and you like to spend and not have to count your pesos, ...
I think I usually end up spending about $100 USD per day for two people. Now, you can 'get by' on a whole lot less, for sure. But, I'm talking taxi rides everywhere, three and four times a day, and having some real nice meals at the best of places. buying coffee for everyone back home... and tipping IF.... it was not already included, which many places it already is, AND, AND.... IF your host did a SPECTACULAR JOB. Otherwise.... I took the advice of many here on PBH, on my recent trip and didn't really pay attention to tipping all and not even most of the time.

I think many here are correct: it's not expected in most cases, but if you are use to tipping and SOMEONE DID A SPECTACULAR JOB for you and a tip was not included, then.... why not. Go ahead. Make them and yourself feel a little better.

and, thank you.

panthdave says on Jun 30, 2007, 06:20:

Surprised Scotty you need to check out Paisa Land at least once...Nice City..and great weather becoming modern quickly but you need to check it out...Friendly people still but probably will change as the city grows..The only problem I see with Medellin Damn airport is in Rio Negro and what a nasty trip espically in the early morning with a hangover which I don't do anymore take all afternoon flights out. You need to climb out of the valley in winding roads for about 45 minutes and going to Medellin the opposite going down into the valley for about 45 minutes. You can fly into the local airport with Santena Airlines via major cities in Colombia only which that is a good airport in the valley but too pricey from MIA-Bogota then a separate ticket with Santena.

Scotty you need to get your ass Medellin..at least once..

Get there early enough, and they have live music. outdoor barbecue, Col style! It will take you back in time, probably about 100 years. Maybe someone else can help clarify.

I found a source in Villavo that would sell me beers by the 30 count case. When my girl found out what my plans were, I never pursued it. They were charging 22.000 for Aguila, Aguila Light, and Costena. At the time, the exchange rate was $1 usd to 2500 cop. That is cheap beer! Of course I would have had to pay a deposit on the bottles and container. They would have even delivered the crates -o- brew for a nominal fee, by bicycle. I would love to get Aguilas by the case here. Those little, fat, 275 or so ml returnable bottles. I have drank 20 of those many times in one sitting, playing tejo or at family festivos.
