How much for an engagement ring in Barranquilla?

Higher Price Excellent question, mi amigo. When I priced engagement rings down there, I was told that the prices were better than in the USA. When I returned to the USA I was shocked to find that this was not true at all. I priced a 1/2 carat center-stone ring with nice side-stones down there for about $2000 USD. I was able to buy a 1 carat center-stone ring with awesome side-stones here for about $2500 USD. The cut, clarity, and color were about the same. If however you want to buy one there, I can tell you a good place to go. I will post it later today after I call my novia.

Jay I live in South Florida, I guess it's not worth buying a ring in Colombia if there's not much of a difference in price. Maybe I can find a deal on Ebay.

Oh by the way I checked out Hotel American Golf while in BAQ, looks like a real nice place. I personally didnt stay there but I use there pool one day, its not the biggest pool but its nice, I will definitly stay there my next visit.

Wal-Mart I've tried to e-mail that place, visited the website and everything. Still no response!!! I'm going down there in June and I'd like to stay there. I guess I'll just have to call! Anyway, have you tried some of the local jewelry pawners? I found some awesome deals at one here in town (Cullman, AL). About half what you would pay at Wal-Mart. By the way, Wal-Mart has some nice stones. You should check them out too. They'll sell you a 1/2 carat solitaire for about $800-$900 and it will be certified. That's a good deal and the stones are nice and clear. ;)

American Golf Yeah something is wrong with there website your best bet is just calling. I believe a regular room is 106,000 and this was confirmed by someone else on the board. But I wouldnt stress it to much the place is nice and new and nearby everything you need (buenavista,prado,exito,parque washington, etc etc). Hmm walmart may not be such a bad idea, Ill have to look into that. I'm sure I can find a great deal on ebay aswell, I'll have to check out the jewelry pawners aswell.

Booked? Was it booked-up? If it doesn't stay booked, I'll just get a room when I roll into town. I like the fact that they'll let me bring my novia up to my room without freaking-out on me and charging me more. And I'd have to say that $40 a night beats the h*ll out of the El Prado!!! On the other subject, you can go to Wal-Mart's website and get a general idea of what's available and the prices, then if you find something comparable at a jewelry pawn you can expect to pay about half of Wal-Mart's price. Diamond ring I bought a diamond ring in Colombia but unfortunately did not know until after buying it that its more common for Colombians to buy the fake diamond rings (sircone?) or I would have saved myself some cash.

Half the rings on display at expensive jewerly stores are fake diamonds (that's what people can afford). There is no stigma against it - even the lady that attended me in the jewerly store was wearing a fake diamond ring.

Fake rings I let my wife decide what she wanted for rings and also to pick one out for me. I paid about $400.00 for both rings with fake diamonds. She explained to me that it really did not matter because she could not wear them out in public in Barranquilla because she would get robbed.

Your move Jay, I am originally from Louisiana, but have lived in Bogota/Barranquilla since November of '03. I'll have to call my wife and ask her the name of the jeweler where we bought our engagement and wedding rings. You mentioned that you would like to stay in Barranquilla. It will be very difficult to aqcuire property (even rent) without a visa. My advice is to have it in her name. If she doesn't have a job, it will require a little more paperwork, but all of the frustration is definately worth it. My apartment is currently in my father in laws name, until I get all of my documentation in order, then we are going to buy a house. As for hotels. In the last year I have stayed in Hotel el Prado, Hotel Royal, Puerta del Sol, Hotel Dann, and one other but forgot the name of it. Barranquilla Plaza also looks nice, I hear that's where a lot of tourists stay. If you have any questions or require any assistance while in country my email is highenergy2003 at aol.com
