How much for a maid in Medellin.

How much does it cost (usd) to have a full time maid who lives in your house who does all your cleaning, cleans your cloths, cooks most meals and does the shopping?

Bump it up.

Ay Hombe!!!!!

Lisa Zee says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:27:

They cost about $25 to 30.000 pesos per day, people usually pay for their bus fare. ( I do and I tip them also) so by the month will be less. But don`t count on them to go shopping, you do the shopping, they don`t drive or have a car. Maids have all kinds or benefits also, like heath care, and all the things that any worker has in Colombia.
There are some maids that make a lot more than others, it is very common now days to have them by the day, they will cook breakfast, lunch and dinner and clean the house, and iron your clothes.

gringoloid says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:29:

lisa, he mentions that he wants the maid to live in his house.

how much of a differential do you apply because you're giving her a place to stay............and probably feeding her?

vicshere says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:29:

you should pay
minuum wage 430,000 or around there
your part of health insuranse about 40,000
pay your part of pension 40,000
pay for food ???
vacations like 10 %
censisiats like 5 %
and a couple of other things 5%
this way you will be legal

listo

gringoloid says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:31:

vic.......what does censisiats mean?

Lisa Zee says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:40:

I said if she lives at the house is less. I don`t remember, but I would say $200.00 dollars or $250.00 per month, with Sundays off or maybe Sat and Sun.

Frank Rizzo says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:57:

Follow Vic's advice above....pay it out right...with the liquidation, min. wage, health insurance, etc...... If you go on the pay per day deal...you can get a contract at La 14....but i'd not have the same person arriving at your house daily on a contract for anything over 1 month......

Don't think it's like in the states...you can just "pay per day"......cause...once the relationship ends...the worker goes to the dept. and they will enforce the liquidation payments, and if someone gets hit by a car walking to work in your home...and you're not paying health insurance.....they will FOR SURE try to hold you responsible....and they just might get it...

jorgegdiaz says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:59:

Cesantias is pension or 401K in the US.
Minimum wage ought to be paid (including meals).
Do it right, work office can go after you if you don´t do it legit, Keep records of payments.

Frank Rizzo says on Apr 8, 2008, 20:02:

Yep....Jorge.....the only thing i dont' know about...is the meals thing.....do you really have to do that....or just a good idea??? thanks...

jorgegdiaz says on Apr 8, 2008, 20:10:

huh?

Man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day.

Frank Rizzo says on Apr 8, 2008, 20:13:

Jorge,....i've never heard of the paying for meals thing......we do..pay all the min. wages, retirement (liquidation thing, whatever its called) , insurance.....

You're right about records for payments... they will come in handy some day for sure..

RAAAY says on Apr 8, 2008, 20:19:

Yep..............not to expensive..........and most of them are still not worth it..........

It's better to pay everything according to the book.............and make sure you have a comfortable seat for her.........you'll go through 30 of them that are fond of sitting on their ass, before you find one that is worth keeping..............sorry.......not 30..........probably 50...

If you are willing to pay, a maid min wage , you will have hundreds wanting the job.
As most maids make 250,000 pesos or less. Always set the rules of the job before hand.
The average maid works 07:am to 5:pm Mon thru Fri and 07 - 12 Sat with Sundays off
Also the maids from 30 to 40 years old , seem to be the reliable.

You're allowed to pay 30% of the live-in-maid's salary in side benefits: room and board etc. Las prestaciones sociales, the social benefits (cesantía, ,vacaciones )are based on 100% of the salary, which usually means on salario minimo.

It is all good though , as Medellin is too far and too crowded, to go to pay or collect a bet.

The Work Code that regulates all employment in Colombia has very specific regulations about the domestic employees; salaries, working conditions, hours, prestaciones. What were you guys thinking?

Somehow it is hard to take any Work Code seriously in a country with a dysfunctional legal system. But extranjeros can be sure that the dysfunctionality will not work in our favor.

This Work Code dates back to 1955 and has been revised many times after that making minor changes; like for example the work hours for domestic help that live in the homes of their patrons may nor exceed 10 hrs a day; prima is not longer obligatory etc.

Any employee who's treated unlawfully can take his/her employer to Work Courts for retrification and amends. It's just that not all domestic employees know how to read and write....beyond the level of a third grader.

We had the Work Code home and paid all our personnel, teachers, chauffeur, cleaning personnel, domestics according to the law. Perhaps that's the reason we never became rich in Colombia...but I'm sure there are plenty of people who DO follow the rules.

You MUST pay at least the minimum wage.
Under that, it is exploitation. It is morally questionable to pay less, and, if you are hard at heart, you can always be reported to the oficina de trabajo.

In Poblado, the maids are paid at least the minimum wage almost wherever. There are maids making 800k per month.
If you move out, to different barrios, some are paid less. I know persons working as maid in Barranquilla for 200k plus bus ticket.

So, as Vic said, minimum wage, food, personal stuff (shampoo, toothpaste, etc.), vacation, extra pay for Xmas, 50% of EPS, pension, cesantia.

Hummm, you've been hitting on all cylinders lately.,, using synfuel of course.

Yes,, many Colombians working the lower levels don't know the law,, BUT,, they are learning quickly, even with a 3rd grade education,,, especially when they see $$$$$$$$$ ($=peso).

Vics posted some good advice,, for how long? years?

Your comment on paying the required rate and probably not getting rich,, why,,, it almost brings tears to my eyes. This is one reason I DO NOT do a LOT of things,, they are JUST NOT RIGHT or have great potential to cause problems, life is tooooo short for problems.

Those having a problem doing RIGHT are either greedy, don't have the money or don't want to spend what it costs to do right. Cheating the system,, not correct in any way shape or form,,, the system is the system and especially applies if you are a foreigner.

Let the Colombians cheat the system.

Want to know why I hope a gringo never lives within 50 miles,, well,, this is a big part of the equation. They are ignorant about the system and telling them the situation only results in them moving from ignorance to stupidity.

Robi: except for your Poblado maids, most over 80% earn less than min wage.
Do some calling to Smrt or ask on the street, very few mades make over 350,000
per month . A fulltime maid does not work a straight labor shift, she gets free food and transport, and works probally 4- 6 hrs in a full day.
