I have an opportunity to teach English to 5 adults. I am new to teaching in Colombia and I would appreicate any insight on what an English teacher should charge adults on a per class basis or weekly or monthly. I would rather do the weekly payment of 3-4 classes per week. Colombians in the Armenia area do not have a good reputation for making on time payments.
Any advice would be apprecited.
Thanks

Bill Turley (Moderator) (Trustee board) (☼Travelguide writer) says on Mar 17, 2009, 18:43: I would charge around 50,000 COP for each class assuming you have experience and certification. The class should be 2 hours Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Rikito says on Mar 18, 2009, 04:26: way too much to charge and out of line. I am thinking half of that. I think $50 would be seen as a rip off. No offencse to you and your comment is well taken, but do you have any other knowledge to back that up? Thanks ...and so it goes 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Rikito says on Mar 18, 2009, 06:00: ujay, who are you to judge me? Who the fuck are you to decide my intelligence? You are nothing...absolutely NADA. From what I have read of your posts you are without question a complete moron in every respect. I thought the amount was too high that's all and I was looking for other opinions. I didn’t reject it; I just wanted some source documentation so I don't rip people off. But then again there are clowns like you. ...and so it goes 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Philly says on Mar 18, 2009, 06:38: Rikito, I am sorry, ujay has a very good point. You should not have asked if you think you know. You had it coming. I have a student who I charge 25.000 pesos a hour for 15 hours a week, 50.000 a hour for 5 adults is not to much to ask. My studentś daughter had classes over the Christmas break with me,he was very pleased with the results,so he decided to take classes. His daughter picked me up and brought me back home. I thought it was very nice of her, but I felt like it was a huge inconvenience, so when her father decided he wanted lessons for a year or so,I asked him to pay for my down payment on a brand new moto, and he did. My point is, 50.000 pesos a hour is nothing for people who are really serious about taking lessons.

mranderson says on Mar 18, 2009, 07:12: Bill turly is in no way out of line. 50k pesos for a 2 hour class with 5 adults is actually pretty cheap. That´s only 5k pesos an hour per adult.

I did have a short term tutoring position for a boy who is the Grandson of the owner of Postoban. I was paid 1,000,000 COP for 4 one hour classes. Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

jameselliot (☼Travelguide writer) says on Mar 18, 2009, 09:39: 50k per hour is standard for a teacher with training and experience in Bogota. Working for a school you'd get less but then they take the hit for missing payments and cancelled classes.

Philly says on Mar 18, 2009, 14:32: Ken, for 2 hours a day, that is good money in Colombia. We are not talking about the United States. I make more money in 3 hours then most Colombians make in 50 hours.

Rikito says on Mar 18, 2009, 16:08: Bill, please understand that I am not berating you. I appreciate what you had to say...it helped me identify some boundaries. Bill, unlike you, I am not a certified English Teacher. I do have a PhD but not in English. My last teaching was at the graduate level at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. Also, I live in Armenia and I know that the people who are interested in me teaching are low paid workers. They work in a Bank and get paid squat. In fact most people in Armenia are paid poorly. ...and so it goes 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Philly says on Mar 18, 2009, 17:53: Yes, If you are talking about the English Institute. It is not really an Institute, he only has students, no building, nothing. He wants to sell students. I believe I can build what he built. If he did it, I am sure I can do it too.
