How much do English teachers make?

I have an opportunity to teach English to 5 adults. I am new to teaching in Colombia and I would appreicate any insight on what an English teacher should charge adults on a per class basis or weekly or monthly. I would rather do the weekly payment of 3-4 classes per week. Colombians in the Armenia area do not have a good reputation for making on time payments.

Any advice would be apprecited.

Thanks

way too much to charge and out of line. I am thinking half of that. I think $50 would be seen as a rip off. No offencse to you and your comment is well taken, but do you have any other knowledge to back that up? Thanks

the next problem is getting the money from your students ...good luck....i have heard every story in the book....my dog ate my money this before i came to class...yea right...the next thing you know the student never comes back

ujay, who are you to judge me? Who the fuck are you to decide my intelligence? You are nothing...absolutely NADA. From what I have read of your posts you are without question a complete moron in every respect. I thought the amount was too high that's all and I was looking for other opinions. I didn’t reject it; I just wanted some source documentation so I don't rip people off. But then again there are clowns like you.

Rikito, I am sorry, ujay has a very good point. You should not have asked if you think you know. You had it coming. I have a student who I charge 25.000 pesos a hour for 15 hours a week, 50.000 a hour for 5 adults is not to much to ask. My studentś daughter had classes over the Christmas break with me,he was very pleased with the results,so he decided to take classes. His daughter picked me up and brought me back home. I thought it was very nice of her, but I felt like it was a huge inconvenience, so when her father decided he wanted lessons for a year or so,I asked him to pay for my down payment on a brand new moto, and he did. My point is, 50.000 pesos a hour is nothing for people who are really serious about taking lessons.

just my 2 cents

If you are going to listen to another opinion, I would also say that 50 mil per 2 hour class for a qualified teacher is quite fair.
That would also include something towards preparation time and materials provided.
If you feel that is too much, then by all means reduce it for those who are not well off.
You may find that reducing the amount will initially provide you with more students but in terms of maintaining them, doing that may not necessarily gain you more respect and enthusiasm. I used to do some low cost or free classes for adults just to help them out and I found their attendances dropped and in the end I packed that in because I never knew if they were going to turn up. I have provided free classes to the children of friends of my wife and I for a year now and that is different; good attendance and highly enjoyable.

Bill turly is in no way out of line. 50k pesos for a 2 hour class with 5 adults is actually pretty cheap. That´s only 5k pesos an hour per adult.

I would probably charge more depending on how far I have to travel and materials involved.

I decided your intelligence on your silly response to Mr bill ,who is a man far more intelligent than even my self ,of whom I ask advice of from time to time ,so when the man takes the time to answer ,you don't tell him he is way off ,

By saying that ,you already knew your own answer to your question.
As for ripping people off what would you care ,
You could even charge 100 an hour ,if people would like to pay it ,its ripping no one off is it .

But from your reply looks like your English is not that great ,
My reply would be ,you have only 5 people ,so why not give these 5 people a few hours of your time ,for free,be an ambassador, but with your intelligence I don't think you should charge more than 500 pesos a day.

Do you know sorry is an English word ,I think its time you used it .

´$600 -$1000 US a month. Like I said, less than minimum wage in North America. Not worth the time and effort. Better to do volunteer work

Ken, for 2 hours a day, that is good money in Colombia. We are not talking about the United States. I make more money in 3 hours then most Colombians make in 50 hours.

just my 2 cents

Bill, please understand that I am not berating you. I appreciate what you had to say...it helped me identify some boundaries. Bill, unlike you, I am not a certified English Teacher. I do have a PhD but not in English. My last teaching was at the graduate level at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. Also, I live in Armenia and I know that the people who are interested in me teaching are low paid workers. They work in a Bank and get paid squat. In fact most people in Armenia are paid poorly.

I was thinking of teaching a curriculum of 4 one hour to 1/1/2 hour segments with each segment being between 20 and 40 hours. I thought that a fee of $25-$35COP/hour would be fair. Since you have experienced I would be very thankful for your comments and/or suggestions.

I liked what Philly and kenblanquito had to say and would like to hear more. For example, I had never thought of the prep time outside of class.

I can’t comment on what ujay said…I have him on ignore…it’s better for me that way and for the many others who also ignore him.

Yes, If you are talking about the English Institute. It is not really an Institute, he only has students, no building, nothing. He wants to sell students. I believe I can build what he built. If he did it, I am sure I can do it too.

I´m a little confused....Bill said that you should charge 50k per class and each class should be 2 hours. So....isn´t that 25k per hour? Exactly what you thought? But you said he was way out of line.

For a guy with a phd, I sometimes have trouble understanding your rational. But maybe that´s because I don´t have a phd.

Anything under 50,000 pesos an hour is a big rejection from me. Not worth my time and the hassle involved if they are not serious. I ask for money up front too, otherwise you won't receive bugger all.

Unless your 18 years old, Still not worth the effort. Better to get a contract some where else for 2-3 months and have a good time doing nothing here.

Unless you wanna do it for the cultural experience.
