How much costs life in Medellin?

Hi there!
I am planning my trip to Medellin, Colombia and plan to stay there for one year. Since I have never been to Colombia before I would really appreciate if you could tell me how much rent, food and travelling expenses can be per week, per person. Please, consider the average spending preferably in pesos.
Thanks a lot :-)

I think You can still get someone whacked in Medellin for less than fifty bucks. That's a cheap life.

It all depends Are you going to rent an apt. or live in hotels? do you like to live in a good area or are you the "backpacker" type who can stay at a not-so-nice hotel? do you like to eat well or not? according to your answers to these questions you will have at least three budgets.

Well, I intend to study spanish with EAFIT. When it comes to living I never spent too much on food but I`m keen on veg and fruit but that suppose to be cheap over there. I prefer to rent a room with bunch of nice people or a colombian family which should be much cheaper than renting an apartment... something decent in a nice part of Medellin... nothing flashy or expensive. That`s what I hope for...
:-) Thanks a lot guys anyway.

You might want to browse through the previous listings in the "buy, sell, rent" forum. Periodically someone will post about a room or an apt for rent. Or you could even try the new Craigslist for Colombia.

Where to live If you're going to study in Eafit then try to find a studio or shared apt. in El Poblado (expensive) or Envigado (less expensive). Tell them to help you find someplace to live, they have a guy there who helps foreigners to find apts. but they just give you numbers to call. Other areas are less expensive (Laureles, Conquistadores) and as nice as El Poblado but you'll need to take two buses or metro to go to EAFIT.
As you surely know the cheapest way to eat is to buy food at supermarkets, there are large supermarkets in El Poblado and Envigado.
Shared room: between 80 and 100 dollars a month, usually with laundry service and one meal included. Studio: around 200 dollars.

good to know This was really helpfull, I`l try to find out more about Envigado area and so on...
I was hasitating to contact EAFIT since I had an impression that they will maybe try to rip me off since I am a foreigner and have no clue about the prices in Colombia. But I will certainly try to contact them.
Thanks :-) I appreciate...

Medellin can be cheap. I rented a room in a nice house for $40 a week. There was a maid there that did my laundry and cooked my meals. That was included in the price. I felt a little guilty.
When I feel like spending money I rent an apartment for $300 or $400 a month. Thats still cheap. If you are super cheap you can rent a room for as low as $50 a month. In the restaurants you can get a full meal for around $2. Some liquor stores sell bottles of booze for only 50 cents. Have fun!

EAFIT Eafit has a website, with an English section.
Prices, etc., are clearly detailed.

I did a four week course there last winter.
The level of instruction was disappointing.

Probably it depends... Thanks a lot guys, it seems that it won`t be a problem to live in Medellin for one year...
EAFIT was recommened to me by one colombiana and the price list I saw seemed alright with me... not too expensive, not too cheap. I know a boy who is with them now and so far he is quite happy... It always depends on instructors I guess but if you can recommend another institution as cheap as this one for one year course I would definitely check it out... :-)
