Good question Costena. I would think that it would hurt incoming visitors, few would dare visit from western countries, but among the expats living there I would assume a few would run but most would watch the situation very carefully for a while and as long as the colombians were doing ok would stay but if the situation detierorated most would leave in a hurry. Most of us gringos have discussed this in some form and have concluded that Hugo would get his tail whipped by col if he were stupid enough to invade. If he invaded succesfully it would still be a good while before he got to any major cities as mde, bog, and cali are a long ways from ven but he could drop a few bombs on them which should wake up a populace which has known war to come together in a common and increased defense, and give our (COL) soldiers the impetus to do serious damage inside ven. BUT,, big but,, nothing is certain in war or the courtroom and a variety of factors both known and unknown can come in to play at any time for either side. KF

Think Venezuela would put up a serious fight? Why do you think el Chavo freaked out about the US sharing Colombian military bases? He knows the US would be more than happy to put him in his place the moment he provides legitimate justification. Though I'm not sure Colombia would need much help. Colombia has been fighting wars with well armed drug lords for decades. Every year, Colombia's military gets more experienced. Though a war with Venezuela might bring some nice benefits. Colombian military would be justified in entering Venezuelan territory in hot pursuit of all the mafia groups who hide just across the border.

He is just talk. He is a buffoon like Noriega and deserves the same fate. He knows he is just a step away from being thrown in jail like Noriega. The billions in arms he is buying are not to defend Venezuela from invasion. Those arms are to protect him. His years of consuming coca daily have taken their toll. He has become a paranoid mess.

I don't believe Chavez would start a war with anyone. He doesn't have anything against Colombia or Colombians. He just doesn't like Uribe and will do whatever he can to make him look bad. Uribe is popular and will probably be the next president. Chavez is popular as well even though the polls indicate otherwise. I would stay because if there were to be a war with Venezuela, it would not last long. Colombia has a great experienced army. When was the last time Venezuela fought anyone? Colombia fights every day and the army and marines are good at what they do and maybe the best trained in South America. Venezuela has a population of 26 million. Colombia has 46 million. There are also a hell of a lot of Colombians in Venezuela. I believe the idea is far fetched but what do I know?

But the reality is part of our make up is to stand stall and not be tread on. Many of us still of of the mindset to protect what is our, be it an adopted country, or their place of birth. Not of all of us have fallen into the pussification that is rampant in the US and rest of the world.

If an American has gone to Colombia and gotten a wife, had kids, and eked out a little grubstake, then he would be loath to leave it.

I would seriously doubt that anything more than a border incursion would happen. If Chavez tries to bomb a city in Colombia the more modern Colombian weapons would be unleashed. Everyone knows the chicas in Chavez harem are the best looking, but I would support Colombia only because I like to watch the Simpsons sometimes.

Venezuelan TV channel Televen forced “The Simpsons” off the air as it was being considered unsuitable for children, and replaced the animated sitcom with “Baywatch Hawaii.” A spokeswoman for the station, Elba Guillen, said on Monday that the decision followed viewer complaints to the National Telecommunications Commission. “They consider it to be a series that isn’t appropriate for that time because it isn’t appropriate for children,” she declared, quoted by the Associated Press.

President Hugo Chavez claimed that the satirical take on a dysfunctional American family “The Simpsons” contains “messages that go against the whole education of boys, girls and adolescents.” Quite controversial, as the 11am timeslot has been handed to “Baywatch,” which features bikini-wearing beauties and muscle-bound hunks.

What US intelligence? The Colombians intercepted the FARC chain of command by having an ex-FARC member infiltrate the FARC's radio communications. This is how the FARC was led to believe that the army chopper was a humanitarian mission.

''You are typically racist Colombian aren't you?''

It seems the self-racist here is you! You can't accept the fact that Colombians could have carried out a successful mission by themselves, so you have to attribute it's success to the USA's minimal assistance. To you, there's ''no way those spics could have done that by themselves"!

The only thing the USA provided was a special transponder device inside the helicopter that would have alerted the Colombian command if something went wrong. That's it! Even the US Ambassador stated in Larry King Love that the operation was 100% Colombian....just accept it!

jimbo67856 says on Oct 30, 2009, 23:12:

Simon, where I come from addressing someone using negative-sounding racial pronouns is known as making a racist statement. You addressed TFL as "half-breed," a statement which explicitly addresses his racial constitution in an unflattering way. It doesn't matter that he actually is both American and Colombian as the "fact defense" would mean it would be okay to address blacks as "hey black guy," something I'm pretty sure they wouldn't like no matter that it's physically true. And I'm sure you know that and are just feigning ignorance (or innocence) to deflect responsibility for what you said. If not I suggest you locate a mixed race black person and walk up to them and call 'em "half-breed." Let me know how that turns out ... if you're still conscious afterward, that is. Point is you either know the term you used is offensive or certainly should know. Neither is something I'd be proud of: One is racist, the other is stupidity. Take your pick.

What's worse, though, is that you presume to divine TFL's motivations as if you could truly know what's in his mind. I don't, neither do you. All I know is what's said, and what was said in this case was "... the US had a 90% hand in [the hypothetical Chavez invasion repulsion]" to which he later added "... the [the hostage rescue operation] that used all the US intelligence." How you deduce racism from that I've not a clue; how you pull the word "spic" from that is curious at best. The only racial epithets used here were YOURS, not TFL's. But TFL is the racist? How does that work precisely? You get to put words in others' mouths and then give them offensive labels, do you? Who appointed you to that role?

IDK who supplied what to the operation because I wasn't involved in it. And just so we're clear, neither were you. But what I do know is that Americans supply a lot of support to the Colombian military in the way of intelligence and materiel. And I suspect you know that as well. If TFL was wrong about this particular operation, though, that doesn't mean he views anyone as a "spic"; "90% American intelligence" doesn't equate to "spic" no matter how hard you twist it. If he's wrong it just means he's incorrect about who contributed what. And it's certainly not "racist" to assume that with all of the considerable support we give to the Colombian military that that might've played a role in this operation. That assumption could be wrong, of course, but that simply doesn't by itself indicate anything other than a logical but wrong deduction (if in fact he is wrong).

Remember, we're helping the Pakistanis fight the Taliban (mostly with predator and satellite intel), so assuming that at least a few of the successful missions might have been supported by US intelligence isn't a "racist" thought but is instead a relatively logical deduction. I'm certain Colombians can fight their own wars; I don't doubt that in the slightest. But I'm also certain our assistance helps them do so, just as British troops in Afghanistan help the US wage that war. So having said that, am I anti-American for admitting we get help? Racist against Americans? Nope, just realistic and aware of these things known as facts ... something you might try.

If Colombias military is so great, why has F.A.R.C. been around more than 40 years...
Maybe we need to import Colombias soldados to clean up Iraq & Afgan...................

Face it Colombias military like the police are very porly trained , very naive, very corrupt.

Well that's a fine point and all, one which might carry some weight were someone here "foking" with Colombia. Problematically, though, no one was.

And Robert, my bad. I misunderstood you. When I get to COL I'll buy you a beer. ;)

the US military and the CIA has done a bang up job, no pun intended, at standing up the Colombian military. I think if Venezuela came knocking at Colombian's door, the Colombian army, with the help of the US would send Chavez back to Caracas, but not before Uribe invited him to the palace for a good ass spanking, like the little girly man he truly is. Chavez, a wonderous child.

I'm just an average guy savoring all of the variances life throws my way!
